How can you go past the Australian Championships for the best tournament? It has to be the most valued and prestigious.

The new venue at the College is great too, we enjoyed the whole thing last year! The official dinner at the old castle like functions hall and the great scones and cakes made by the organising committee ladies were the highlights! :)
Having said that the university place isn't bad either, since the Arts Centre and other places of cultural value are closer!
I look forward to see you there Comrade!

Hi Scott, this 9:30 start is a killer for interstate players who having to work late on Friday are forced to catch flights at the most inconvenient hours early Saturday!
Also there is a rumour that after games players wil be asked to take their Kings with them,:hmm: is it true???? No, I know it's not! :P
I hope there will be some special consideration (registration, inclusion in the draw etc) for us poor souls who won't make it to the venue till a few minutes before the start of play!
Here is some research i did:
Driving directions from Adelaide Airport to to Woodforde
16.6 km – about 36 mins
It's on a straight line East, you can't miss it!
Here is info about the venue
http://www.rostrevor.sa.edu.au/flexipage.aspx?PageId=101
By the looks of it leftys, atheists, agnostics etc won't be very comfortable here, so either behave or else! :P

Sensational accommodation offer at Rostrevor College! More details later, but I can tell you that it is so good, some of the locals may also take it up instead of going home for the night! Apologies for being so late with information and entry forms, but the global financial crisis has caused major difficulties with funding this year, which have taken some time to work around. All efforts have been made to preserve the culture and atmosphere of the tournament and continue the Freytag Checkmate tournament's reputation as Australia's best 2 day chess event. Hope to finalise budget and entry forms at SACA council meeting on Wednesday 13th May and have website details and entry forms available the following weekend. Grandmasters, International masters, FIDE masters and most importantly the ordinary chessplayer, get ready with your keyboard or pen and enter as soon as entry forms are available. The Freytag Checkmate will continue to be a highlight of the Australian chess calendar.

Wow, that sounds really good William, I am sure this offer will inspire some of the regular Victorian Squad members such as Watto, Gattaca, the Stojic Bros (and dad), Domagoj, Voony, Dido12, Eclectic and myself and foreigh legeon members ie Gunner etc to make the pilgrimage this year!

Band together and get a hire car. Cheaper than a taxi and, with a GPS thrown in, you will at least know where you are going unlike the knucklehead taxi driver who asked me where Rostrevor College was. Sheeze and he lived in bloody Adelaide.

PS Gents, just be aware that the accommodation is really, really boarding school stuff. However, be grateful that it is unlikely that you will be required to assemble on Cricket Oval Number 1 at dawn on Sunday for a stirring rendition of "The Battle Hymn of The Republic" - unless you are totally out of your minds and wish to do just that.

Hi Gunner,

As you earlier said you were probably going to play in Open I indicated to William AS my change from u1600 to Open so we can finally play now you enter U1600.

You are very fickle - besides , playing in the Open I avoid playing a bunch of underrated juniors.

My comeback to chess has a pass mark only. Because of coaching for 10 years the theory is fine but not match hardened as havent really played in ten years other than 12 - 14 games i think. So concentration for 2 1/2 hours and sight of board a bit scratchy but i may surprise the odd player in the open in between getting hammered.

Anyway gunner I will see you there - have you given up smoking??

Ayup George

I didn't indicate I was playing in the Open, but I confess to musing so. Ultimately I was advised against it by my head coach. As for underrated juniors ... bring it! I will have their heads NOT :uhoh:

Yes I am a human sausage-free zone - and loving it!

I'm also partaking in the dinner this year because I will be sans family (long story), which means I am available for song and dance routines as well as the telling of shaggy dog stories.

Stephen Daenke is probably the strongest junior in the under 1600 as far as the entries list go. He had an excellent performance in the just finished interclub.

I thought things were meant o get easier as one gets older:doh:
Will there be anyone over 4 feet tall in my division?
Out of curiosity, when if ever, is it possible to request a divion change?

A few but not many  It is always possible to change division before the tournament starts, you just pay more money :) As for a divion change? I do not know what that is :eh: so it may be a bit more difficult. ;)

Of the rated SA players on the list there are 4 adults, George Vuckov, Brent Glascott, Edward Branson and Peter Hunt. I do not know ANY of the unrated players.

Beware, some of the juniors have coaches and are well booked up if you stray into their pet lines. I had to re-evaluate my ideas in what I was doing in a French exchange after a WGM coached her charge in how to take it apart.

In any case local entries are still coming in thick and fast, with the usual suspects leaving it to the last minute for the dash for cash. It looks to be a great weekend.

Hi All,
Last I heard some time ago when discussing conditions was that info was going to be relayed to James Morris and that he was almost certainly coming. I left confirmation as to whether he was coming or not to James/Mischa to make to William AS on chesschat as he is the organiser not me.

Anyway all is right with the world now and we can look forward to a great tourney.

The tournament hall will be warmed up for a couple of hours from 6.00 am with industrial strength blowers courtesy of the school.

I repeat as i did at last years tourney I am NOT the organiser of this years tourney - I have been the telephone contact , put up notices at the hall , moved the pieces timers boards etc from the Chess centre to playing venue but i am not the organiser. William AS as on chesschat IS THE ORGANISER.

After 2 rounds of the Open there is a reasonable of number of 2/2 including David Smerdon (who has won both games in way less than 20 moves), Igor Goldberg, Mark Chapman and James Morris. Daryl Johansen is only on 1.5 after managing to blow a totally winning position against Richard Voon in the first round only to draw. Ronald Scott also drew in the first round, but from a peice down against Zac Searle. Trevor Tao lost in the second round to Srbo Zaricwho showed he still can play at a very high level despite his rating falling of late.
In the under 1600 those on 2/2 are headed by Pavel Turcaj and Vincent Horton. Sophie Eustace drew with George Vuckov in the second round. I doubt I will be back at the venue this weekend so no more updates.

Great performance by David and James. David showing his continued great form and James showing his zonal performance wasn't just a one of performance. He seems to have taken a huge step forward and is performing like he is one of Australia's best players, something that should excite all Australian chess players. A good performance by Yi Yuan as well and he seems to be improving solidly although not quite as dramatically as James.

Smerdon games against me and Chapman positions that looked dead equal at certain point. However, he constantly applied pressure, extracted a small advantage and mercilessly converted into a full point.
Brilliant effort!

Morris played well, I couldn't get even slightest advantage in our game.

Against Yi Yuan after a long and difficult struggle I managed to get a winning advantage in the endgame. Unlike Smerdon, however, I let it slip away.

no excuses please:)
It was not an excuse, it was an objective comparison of the strength. Inability to convert big (in the mentioned case decisive) advantage to a full point indicates an weakness. Ability to convert minuscule advantage to a full point indicates strength.

Hi Garvin,

Apart from not including the title column and the Swiss Perfect byline, is your post different at all from #101 (http://www.chesschat.org/showpost.php?p=246706&postcount=101)?

Sorry I didn't have the chance to check all 280 results entries.

He's redone it so that it can all be seen at once without needing to toggle the code window left and right. In this case I believe it has been done by simply changing the text size.

OK that probably explains. It might be a bit browser dependent but on my setup removing the title column is enough to fit it in the a code panel without horizontal scrolling.

Truth be told I had not realised that a previous cross table for the open had been posted :uhoh:

But yes to get the cross table to remove the horizontal scroll bar I had to use size 2.

Fair enough. I was just wondering as it was a bit mysterious to me, having seen the first one.

Yes, but it will take a little time. Last years Open games are available on the SACA web site www.sachess.org

Thanks Lawrence, hearing words of approval from such a talented youngster as yourself is always encouraging. BTW another Tasmanian junior, Vincent Horton, performed well and imressed with his personality!
And Cedric is always good to provide links, since that's helpful for people who have just joined, or aren't accustomed with the forum's structure.
Also Cedric you will receive PM with interview questions sometime during the weekend!

Yes Vincent Horton is an extremely dangerous opponant and quite mature beyond his years. Often though I think he plays to who he is playing. I mean that when he is playing Tazzies top you can always expect a rivetingly close game but when he is playing lower rated players he tends to lax up a bit and maybe not get the best results. This makes him underrated which I guess works as a surprise when he plays higher rated players.

It's when he gets older that we'll see his true potential and I would stake money on that he makes the most improved or highest rated for age list in next couple of years without a doubt.

Lol as Kev told me that's the reason I got a draw against him :)

Actually as I recall I said he was unreliable against weaker juniors (as most juniors are) though for what it's worth he also doesn't put away lower rated adults consistently. For instance Tony Sturges who is now in the 1100s and often draws (or sometimes even loses) against juniors of only 500 strength, has drawn with Vincent in the last two Tas Opens. In both cases Tony played very well.

Vincent needs more work on his opening if he wants to play the 4 Knights. I will introduce him to 4.Bb5 soon if I get a chance. :)

You played well. Of course you don't have to force the draw in the final position. You can take on f3 and seek a queen swap and you are positionally much better with the bishop pair and Vincent's bad knight on the queenside and backwards c-pawn. But against a junior who outrates you (and who by the way is quite resilient in inferior positions) I think taking the draw was a reasonable decision.

why introduce him to the boring 4.Bb5 (IMO) when you've got the:
Halloween's (Nxe5)
Belgrade (d4 exd4 Nd5)

Not sure anyone should really be encouraged to play the Halloween in rated games although I know people who have done so. Belgrade is probably more playable if you like things sharp. I'm not sure Vincent is the sort who goes for sharp messy theory; think he prefers just getting pieces out in an acceptable fashion.

10 months is still within deadline isn't it?

Adelaide Episode III (2009)

No family this year. Woohoo! I mean 'how sad'. Emergency exit leg room. Bliss. Out of the arms of the Jetstar lovelies and straight into the arms of ... ahem ... Igor Goldenberg! I'd like to see him in a petit orange flight attendant's jacket. Yep I.G. met me straight off the plane and presented me to Domagoj and Nikola - the first time I had met either. So this is what it feels like to be met by the KGB in a place far from home freezing your nuggets off.

Another Adelaide taxi ride. Another Indian driver (see 2008 report), but this chap has some marked differences over his predecessor. Not only did he not know where he was going, he apparently didn't know where his brake pedal was either. A timely yell 'Stoooooooooop!', and he found the brake but inertia wasn't so kind and I wound up much more close and personal with the ruskies than I planned :D and not to mention a split second from joining them in the boot of the car in front.

The driver didn't mind his dance music and liked it loud (a change again from last year's mesmerising Indian love ditty). With four out-of-town passengers directing, our chaperon delivered us bruised, shocked and deaf to Rostrevor College.

I had stated in the relevant thread that I had expected a limo service which to my great surprise didn't eventuate (must have been an oversight), but I forgave the organisers when I saw that they had changed the name of boarding house to Duggan House (http://www.rostrevor.platypussoftware.com/flexipage.aspx?PageId=134), in obvious deference to their interstate visitor.

It's 9pm in a boarding house 2,000 klms from home. What to do? Escape! Colditz style (well sort of) and having co-opted a willing house master, I broke into the tournament hall and tea-leafed a couple of chess sets. Igor was happy to give me couple of lessons but the rest of the assembled decided bed was in order in readiness for the off tomorrow. Meh! Not a patch on the pre-tourn pub-hopping from year one courtesy of Aaron THE.

Now, after a pleasant night's kip I swear to God I had every reason to believe I had been taken to a gulag. I emerged from my room to a corridor to be confronted with zombies (read 'unshaved, unwashed men like me') in dressing gowns, variously looking lost, vacant-eyed, menacing, expectant - and all in complete eerie silence. Every state from eastern Europe must have been represented and everyone's name, I was sure, started with a Z and used each of the letters JUBYX interspersed. Nothing like Queensland. Vive la difference!

However brekkie soon dispersed the barriers (real or imagined) - and I was pleased to meet Richard Voon and David Hacche and ors whose names I had known well from chess results.

OK down to the hall. Renzies was located (he had a Gunners shirt for Andrew! - I couldn't believe it. He'd mentioned it the previous year, and there he was - 12 months later and another few kilos lighter and he had a bloody Gunners shirt! - How's that for class!?) as were a couple of other usual local suspects who I had come to know. Chesschatters Rat In Hat, George, Scott to recall but a few.

A quick peek and it's Leteisha Simmonds, David Smerdon and yours truly - Queenslandeeeeeeeeeeers in a sea of foreigners! I think young David's still in denial about his heritage but Queenslander it is. Can we do it? Yes we can! (To the tune of Bob The Builder).

What's this? Who is that man!? It's Phil Lutley (of whom I've never heard) but he's wearing an Arsenal shirt! My God - we're everywhere!

OK, let the games begin. Day one. Four games. Nothing remarkable except one young chap who was kind enough to meet the Tromp's 2.Bg5 with a delayed ... e6?? (and off went the lady), and a certain Renzies who managed to swipe not one but both my rooks for his bishops. I call it my double rook sacrifice! Whatever its moniker, it ain't any good and I finished the day 3/4. But I'd been here before (Adelaide. Episode I. 2007) and I knew what I had to do - beat up on children and swindle the big boys :D

And that's exactly what happened. Games 5 and 7 saw two reasonably solid young men lose valiantly to prince patzer but game 6 pitched me against the tourn favourite and apparently undefeated for a year or so, Pavel Turcaj. Pavel resigned to a tactic (that was analysed here (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=10362) at the time) that dropped a queen according to both of us across the board, the game.

But no! Black drops a queen but wins anyway (most likely OTB). Anyway, that's chess and 6/7 and first place it was.

A bloke called Smerdon apparently won the other division (I'm not sure they were much chop though - amateurs) resulting in a Queenslander nipping both divs. I don't think the Adelaide guys mind - I mean they're basically British anyway. Salt of the earth. And that was that. All done and dusted for another year.

Another great weekend of chess. Good facilities. Good dinner and piano on Saturday evening. Good management with the usual suspects - Charlie, Rollie, Georgie, Willie. Thanks Adelaide. Til next time ...
