Ta, bergil. I intend to play in this one. Will note the early bird cut-off date!

There is a good chance that I will play in this one too, since I am going to be working in Sydney during that time!
Despite the fact that I have lived in Sydney and I should know better, being an old guy I forget things easily so please help me with the following two questions:
1) Does the train (North Sydney Station) get me close to the venue?
2) Any good hotels in the area? That's in case my work assignment has finished so I don't have to travel from Brighton Le Sands to Nth Sydney for the two days of the tournament!
In any case, if I finally play I will fix my entry details by the end of this week!
Thanks in advance and...
CAGLES :)

Hi Jak,
Re (1) there are regular buses from Miller St. (near station) up to Cammeray. E.g. 202 I think. The web site to check for Sydney transport is http://www.131500.info/realtime/default.asp
Re (2) there is a hotel roght by the station (the Greenwood) and another on McLaren St. (Rydges) which is nearish to Nth Sydney station. Probably cheaper places too, including in Cammeray itself. Others may be able to help further.
It will be good to meet you!

Thanks Adamski,
The chances are now more than 80% of playing there! :)
Actually, it is like returning back home after so many years! :) I mean I visit Sydney often but not to play Chess!
I will do the entry payments and hotel booking tonight, although I presume that even if i stayed at Brighton LeSands it won't really be that hard to go to Cammeray since it's during weekend!
Looking forward to see you all! :)

CAGLES again!!! :)I missed the game but I had this bad nightmare where we lost 3- zip!

Actually, after re-watching (and re-enjoying) Apollo 13 on Sci-Fi cable channel I was too tired to stay up, what with having to get up at 6 am for work again today! First day back!

I don't want to be a pain or anything but would that be ok if i come to the opening round just a few minutes before games start? Due to business related problems I can't make the registration deadline! :(

Spelling of my name - Jonathan Adams.
Throughout school (maybe I should have been home-schooled and the problem would not have arisen!!) I had to put up with teachers even mis-spelling my Christian name. I have got used to it. At least ACF records have it right.:)

Spelling of my name - Jonathan Adams.

The trick is - to win more tournaments. In this case, people will be more used to your name and will make less spelling errors :owned: . However, I can recall Elwood Bendigo misspelling 90% of the top players' names in the tournament he was running. The list of participants included: Salamon, Johansson etc.

Hi all
what a day yesterday!!
:D 40+ outside, great comfort inside the Norths Club where the tournaments is held
:D People here believe we are doing better in Victoria in terms of tournament organisation!
:D Judging from tthe excellent way this tournament is organised and run, they might have to reconsider!
:D Fantastic atmosphere, friendly people, very much a family event, excellent food and faclitiies provided by the Norths.
:D GM Ian Rogers is here, watching games, particularly those of junior players.Met quite a few CC Forum Chatters for first time. All friendly and good humoured.
:D In discussions I found that their judgement about CC Forum is that it is an asset for Aus Chess!
:D From the old faces I recognised Rahmadi and Dibley. I knew Shane since he was a kid!
:D Bus Stop, Sat around 9 pm, waiting for the bus to get me back to Rydges. Sabella, a Norwegian woman starts talking to me about my bag, resembling one of her sister's. In front of other chessplayers including Rahmadi, Beahan and some others I am abducted by Saballa. I think I am in love :owned: Thank God I made it back to Rydges on time to check out this morning :P
:D My next report will be from Melbourne late tonight!

On the contrary my friend! I was in fine form today, after all Sabella was a positive infuelnce and I finally won $125.00 in prize money.
I don't even know why it was that much! Maybe the organisers made a mistake, in which case I am more than willing to return the money!
If not Sabella will get a nice present!

Pretty amazing for a 500s player. Suspect him beating Anton is another case of my theory that all young juniors are unreliable against other juniors.

Well done justaknight; excellent result.

Anton touched a pawn and only after realized that his queen was attacked by opponent's knight. Actually almost all his losses in this tournament were like that. He is getting completely winning position and suddenly makes an unbelievable blunder to resign almost immediately. Well, this is why they say that kids are inconsistent. ;)

In any case, congratulations to Jasper, he did extremely well in this tournament and probably got 100+ rating points.

Well at the start of the second day I looked at Anton's score and he was only on one, which was pretty strange to me. He played really well in the U1600 at manly only days ago. Maybe he was over confident when he won the minor so he was rushing. I used to be like that :P all well XD once again, congraz to jasper ^_^

Thank you all very much for your kind words.
The greatest satisfaction of this tournament was that I had the chance to meet in real life so many friends that I had known only from this Forum. Also old faces from the past like Herman Rachmadi, Shane Dibley and Michael Tracey, the last two were actually youngsters when I left NSW and moved to Victoria.
Chesswise, I am happy because I gave a real hard time to all players who beat me and who were much higher rated than myself.
All in all, out of 7 games, I played 6 games against opponents with higher rating than mine and only one vs a player rated lower than me, and I have to consider myself very lucky to win that particular game.
One of the highlights of the tournament for me was that I had the chance to play vs my old friend Herman Rachmadi and beat his favourite Sicilian thus extracting my revenge (after more than quarter of a century) for a painful last round defeat where I had the white pieces and the opening was, you guessed right, another Sicilian!
Between rounds I chatted United with Bergil, Herbert/Sullivan with Adamski and winning positions turning into disasters with Trent.
I also had the chance to meet the legendary Johnny Bolens as well as NSW Chess personalities like Mssrs Norman Greenwood and Peter Cassettari!
I was expecting to see Bill, Lloyd and maybe A/C and Kaitlin but no avail. Inquiring about Bill I got the answer that "He doesn't usually turn up in tournaments, but I bet anyone that two people working full time couldn't do the amount of work he is doing"! I don't know if this statement is exaggerated or not, I am just quoting verbatim the seasoned gentleman who spoke to me.
Finally, I am rapidly improving on the talking too much and too loud dept. Proof: I was told to shut up only once during the whole tournament!

I was quite surprised because I don't think he showed much sign of this at the juniors, but perhaps the coaching he got there took awhile to sink in.

Adams (1555) - Mustafa Erkan (1813) 1 Nf3 Nf6 2 g3 b6 3 Bg2 Bb7 4 0-0 e6 5 d3 be7 6 e4 0-0 7 Nbd2 c5 8 Re1 Nc6 9 Nf1 d6 10 h3 Qc7 11 Bf4 Nd7 12 Ne3 Nd4 (?) 13 Nxd4 cxd4 14 Ng4 Ne5 (near forced as a winning sac is in the wind) 15 Rc1 a5 16 c3 Qc5 (?) 17 cxd4 Qad4 18 Rc7 (wins a piece for a pawn of course) 18...Nxd3 19 Rxb7 (I took that Bishop as I did not want it to go to a6) 19...Qb4 20 Re2 Nxf4 21 gxf4 d5 22 exd5 Rad8 23 Qd2 Qd6 24 Qe3 h5 25 Rxb6 (all over) 25...Qc7 26 Rc6 1-0.

This was my best game of the tournament. The next most pleasing was a draw with another 1800 + player - Sarwat Rewais. I was unfortunate in some ways to have to play 2000+ Adrian Chek in the last round. Actually, the round had to be redrawn and in the initial version I was playing a 1660 player. The redraw cost me over 300 rating points in opponent and Adrian duly beat me.

Proof: I was told to shut up only once during the whole tournament!Congrats JAK. You did very well and obviously enjoyed your time in Sydney. BTW it was Gilbert and Sullivan! T'was good to meet you.

Congrats Elliot on a excellent performance....

I feel even knowing I ended up on 4 as well....that i'll lose points as I played 2 people rated over me and 4 under with 1 unrated.

Anton Had a bit of a bad tournament. He had me on the ropes ready for the knockout blow and then made an error allowing me to play a nice combo.

{near forced as a winning sac is in the wind}

I actually don't think so. White is a very long way from assembling a winning sac in this position. The only apparent sac square is h6 but if Nh6 black can take it then play ...Kh8; if white wants to invest two pieces for a rook then let him otherwise ...Rg8 is on the radar.

I also think the white knight on g4 is actually rather weak because so many squares it wants to go to are well covered. As Black I wouldn't be giving white the option of exchanging it off for a good knight. I'd play 14...e4.

15.Rc1 a5 16.c3 Qc5 {?}

This is really where Black goes wrong. ...a5 is a do-nothing move ignoring white's pressure on the c-file and then ....Qc5 is a blunder which you seized on nicely.

Well done.

Well done. Thanks for your comments, Kevin. I have no doubt you are right. I have yet to analyse the game in detail. Just what I thought at the time. I think Mustafa missed that his N would be pinned on his Q after taking on d3.
