I too hope to be there - it always was a good start to the year, years ago I had 2 regular tournaments - Newcastle to start the year and Fisher's Ghost to finish (unless there Was an Oz Open or champs) with others as 'fillers' - aah those were the days ...

Trent Parker

I'll be there too! Newcastle Open holds a place in my ......... heart?

The newcastle Open was the very first Chess Tournament I entered back in 2001!

There were 60 players that year! Can we get this tournament up to those numbers again???

Trent Parker

Attention to all who intend on playing this event: Rego is now from 10.00-10.15 with the first round starting at 10.30.

The website previously had a later stating time and I am advised that this had to be changed.

Trent Parker

As there are no early entries I think most people will just enter on the day. Although I've let Greg Wilson Know that i'd be coming.

I'll ask for a possible list of people.

I have decided that if I win any prizemoney at the Newcastle open or subsequent tournaments while the appeal is going I will donate half of my winnings to the bushfire appeal.

So i hope to play some great chess

Hi Bill. I was just wondering why Heather Richards from NSW doesn’t appear in the list of top female players on the acf website even though there's an exclamation mark against her rating on the site itself? What’s the story there?

EDIT: Ah. Has she just recently changed federations? Hope so. I see she's a former English Olympiad player. On the ACF site, she’s on the foreign players list but in the Newcastle Open she’s down as being from NSW.

Yes, I saw that too. Perhaps the NSW listing here is incorrect.

Yes, I saw that too. Perhaps the NSW listing here is incorrect. The NSW in the tournament listing did not come from the ACF master file.

As far as I know she is still OS.

losses to Heather and Vlad and a draw with someone

The loss against Vlad was just rubbish, played the worst game of chess for at least 6 months :(
Against Heather, I was easily better out of the opening, but miscalculated, thinking her cheap trick didn't work, but it did :(
And the someone was Ronald Scott, where I accepted a draw in a won position.
First round was good, but against a 1700 called Nathalie Eimers, I got into a little bit of trouble.
Against Mike Canfell, I dropped a pawn for nothing in a Sicilian, but managed to swindle him with a classic Nd5 sac, with his king in the centre.
Last round against Mos Ali, I played f4 against him , but I dropped an exchange with again, a miscalculation. But I swindled him too.
Overall, I wasn't happy with my performance at all.

On the ACF site, she’s on the foreign players list but in the Newcastle Open she’s down as being from NSW.

it should have been OS not NSW.
i think allan (DOP) put the names in manually (didn't use the master list).
would have mentioned it to him but didn't realise he typed them in until now.

don't think she plans to change from england to australia
but is currently living in newcastle with aussie boyfriend.

Heather Richards is still highly thought of by the English Chess Federation and we hope she will be available in the future to represent England.
