lol i understand that Eclecticus, I was only joking (see :P smiley at the end!) and I, actually, agree with with you that the tournament should be held in the lovely area you suggest.
I do not, however, know how realistic this is at this stage!
On the other hand, the involvement of GM Nigel Short in this tournament will improve the image of the sport in this country a lot, because it will attract a record of participants both in numbers and playing strengh as well as sponsors (I hope)!
That means that the venue is important!

So what are the current thoughts on 7-rounds vs. 9-rounds?

I would love 9 rounds, but how do we fit it in-

Norms can be obtained only if we have a lot of overseas players. Otherwise it does not really matter whether it's 7 or 9.

would it help get over seas players if we had 9 rounds

Igor_Goldenberg
04-12-2008, 03:39 PM
would it help get over seas players if we had 9 roundsOnly those concerned with norms. But as far as norms concerned, almost any other country has an advantage over Australia.

eclectic
04-12-2008, 03:48 PM
perhaps the idea might be to plan for 9 rounds but if you don't obtain the critical mass of overseas players then revert to 7 rounds coupled with a simul display etc on the spare day

of course the final format of the event would need to be conveyed to shirty for fide registration purposes by a certain date

another idea is having a number of fide rated events happening close together so that titled players find it worth their while to come over for a decent stretch of time

for example when is the surfers paradise event happening

tying the event in with the melbourne cup might be another promotional angle

MichaelBaron
04-12-2008, 06:24 PM
I may be wrong but to have the norms, you need to have no more than 2 games a day...I may be wrong though.

Of course you should play the 2009 Melbourne International Open (MIO) as a 9-round event starting on the Friday night. Format 1-2-2-2-2

Friday 1
Saturday 2
Sunday 2
Monday (take a sickie) 2
Tuesday (Melbourne Cup day) 2

How much money is available for conditions?

Dougy
05-12-2008, 09:56 AM
"Take a sickie" is the Aussie way (:. Perhaps half-point byes in round 6 can be arranged for those unable to take sickies.

I wouldn't worry too much about IM/GM norms. There is very little chance of someone attaining one. One advantage of 9-rounds is it will give more players a chance to play against (and spectators to watch) a great like Nigel Short.

The full set of norm rules is here (http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=58&view=article):

Getting overseas players to an event is only the start - Australia has a number of resident foreign registered players which helps. Other issues to make a norm feasible, apart from the obvious one of playing well enough, are

- you have to actually play them; and

- you have to play a strong enough field overall to make norms mathematically possible.

This is very difficult in a standard Open Swiss. Doeberl and SIO address the first by aiming to attract sufficient players from overseas to take advantage of para 1.43e which allows norms to be earned in

Swiss System tournaments in which the competitors include at least 20 FIDE Rated players, not from the host federation, from at least 3 federations, at least 10 of whom hold GM, IM, WGM or WIM titles.and the second by holding the events in sections.

IMO if you can't achieve 1.43e, don't bother with the norms in Swiss open.

Short recently won the Commonwealth Chess Championship in India which ran for 11 rounds from late September to early October (official site: http://www.commonwealth-chess.com/)

All his games are available via the official site but here’s a direct link – just click on Replay Games.

Malcolm, I know and thanks for the observation, as well as the divine intervention :P

However, my note to James is of a humorous nature and it is rather aimed at linguistic styles developed in the Internet.

James is my friend, and he knows I respect him as a person as well as a multitalented youngster in many other fields apart from Chess where his abilities are well documented!

By the way, it has been published elsewhere that your singing talents weren't exactly appreciated by your Kiwi audience! Was that due to

You not being in form in that particular evening? :hmm:
Quality of the bourbon not being up to scratch?
Kiwis trying to get their revenge for that underarm (cricket) incident?

Cheers and good luck for the rest of the tournament! :)

I think the reason he is coming is because he has a big plus score against Short. And maybe to win money.

What is the time control for this event?

Starting to plan my chess calendar, and I have added this tournament.

The idea that Short will play is a great bonus. He's been in wonderful form lately. (I think I read 2990 as his most recent performance rating!?)

I saw Tiviakov's name mentioned ... anything confirmed there?!
