Oh no it is degenerating into a Waits vs Young debate!!!

Let's not forget the words of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’

The Beatles - Were just a band.
Led Zepplin - Just a band.
The Beach Boys - Just a band.
The Sex Pistols - Just a band.
The Clash - Just a band.
Crass - Just a band.
Minor Threat - Just a band.
The Cure - Just a band.
The Smiths - Just a band.
Nirvana - Just a band.
The Pixies - Just a band.
Oasis - Just a band.
Radiohead - Just a band.
Bloc Party - Just a band.
The Arctic Monkeys - Just a band.
The next big thing - JUST A BAND.

We can add...

Neil Young - Just a singer
Tom Waits - Just a singer

PS If any of these band names are new to you you should definitely listen to more music.

Minor Threat is new to me.

Best known these days for being unwittingly responsible for the hideous horror of "straight edge", a puritanical hardcore punk youth movement that started from an exaggerated misinterpretation of one of their songs.

Don't be too concerned. I was being facetious.

Why not just:
Bands: The Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Beach Boys, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Crass, Minor Threat, The Cure, The Smiths, Nirvana, The Pixies, Oasis, Radiohead, Bloc Party, The Arctic Monkeys, The next big thing.
Singers: Neil Young, Tom Waits
?
instead of reiterating "Just a singer, Just a band"?
lol

That song always just reminds me how much I want to listen to some of those bands. And I am also suprised that the Arctic Monkeys made the list they seem more recent than the others. (but are still just as good) Bloc party is barely worth a mention also.

I think Bloc Party's debut album was only one year ahead of the Arctic Monkeys.

I guess the idea was have a sense of naming a number of big things over a substantial time period from the Beatles, who arguably were the first worldwide popular music phenomenon (Beatlemania) through to the Arctic Monkeys who were being touted as the current big thing at the time the song was composed.

The list being compiled with the benefit of hindsight meant a number of bands (like ABBA) could be conveniently forgotten. Also bands like The Smiths are highly regarded especially by musos but perhaps never had the popular success of a number of others from the list, like The Beatles or Led Zepp.

I was disappointed that The Libertines didn't get a mention. :)

Rincewinds post totally reminded me how cool Nirvana were. Conspiracy time! Did courtney love kill Kurt Cobain? Hype hype hype.

Oh Kaitlin it's not that I don't like Tom Waits it's just that...hmmm...why would I listen to Jet when i can listen to The Rolling Stones? But beauty is in the eye of the beholder I s'pose.

Just let me say that I think Courtney Love has recorded some reasonable music and Hole's Celebrity Skin album in particular was not bad.

Josh pyke is pretty cool. I saw him live but he was kind of a backing band. I might go see him soon though 'cos his new stuff is pretty special.

Ladytron yo! Electro/pop kind of like a faster MGMT with more solid beats and female vocals (occasional male). I thought they were pretty tight and if you fancy this kind of music I definitely recommend checking them out.

On another note I finally completed my Kings of leon collection having now all the albums and I specifically got the OG releases for Holy roller novacaine extended and Where nobody knows although unfortunately I'm unsure if they have extra tracks on their later albums (I don't really care though seeing as their last two albums have gone downhill.)

I prefer to use the adjective "catholic". (With a lower case 'c' of course).

Even among religions, the various protestant churches have much better music than the Catholics, to the point where Ralph Vaughan Williams (a descendant of Charles Darwin, and an atheist himself) would even write for the Anglicans.

I guess it depends on your bent. I like Bach but I'm not a Lutheran. :D

However, I was thinking of the nonreligious sense of catholic, meaning "broad in scope". I have diverse musical tastes with classical, opera, folk, rock, jazz, blues, rap, and other genres sprinkled throughout my collection.

I think the broader one's musical tastes, the greater the chance that someone else will find some part of it "questionable".

I understood what sense you meant by catholic :)

Gorillaz! Demon days is the album and it's well worth it. I also heard that Blink 182 are getting back together, personally I don't really care because I don't like them but people here might. All I can hope that is that Blink reuniting leads to a break up of +44 and AVA :)

Anybody here a fan of Sublime? I think they are pretty cool. It's like jazz but with more hardcore lyrics. Their genre sways. But yeah I really like "The wrong way" It's a song by them. But I don't like the video of it.
