Hello everyone,

I am ashamed that it is not until the end of this event that I put up some information, so I will put it all up

so here are the round by round reports, which you may read through and eventually find out who won!

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

35 players entered the 2008 Dandenong Club Championship.

This year the committee decided for the first time to offer prizemoney in
the club championship.

First place will receive $250 + trophy and second $100 + trophy.
If there is a tie for first the the players will split the money, (eg; two
players would receive $175 each), but title of club champion, trophy and
honour board listing is decided using the following tiebreaks in sequence
until a winner is determined.
1/ Median-Bucholz 2/ Bucholz 3/ Progressive

The Reserves Championship, ($75 + trophy) is open to all players in the
bottom half of the field, (based on ratings).
This year all players rated below 1540 will be eligible.

The three rating group prizes ($40 each) will be;
U1700, U1540, U1200 with each group containing 9 players.

** As the U1540 and U1200 rating groups coincide with the Reserves, one of
the rating group prizes will go to 2nd-place, with 1st-place winning the
Reserves.

Top seed is Milenko Lojanica who has won everything else at this club but
for some reason has failed to take out a club championship. This years
reason was almost because he didn't enter. Only after the pairings were
done did Milenko decide to enter, had Syf Pronk not turned up even later
Milenko could have received a 1/2-point bye instead of a 1-point win.

As is normal the first round went almost exclusively according to ratings,
the only upset being Victor Lane defeating Ramo Burzic who may have taken
it too easily.
But there were plenty of games where the higher rated player could consider
themselves fortunate.
On board 1 Don Machell found himself a rook for a few pawns up, but with a
king in the centre coming under fire from Bahri Senturk's advanced pawns.
Amazingly Bahri conjured up a winning position, and even though he missed a
quick forced win he was still able to make Don to swap his queen for rook.
This left Bahri with a queen and 6-pawns vs Don's 2-rooks and 2-pawns.
Bahri pushed his pawns one step too far giving Don a perpetual, but in
trying to get out of it Bahri fell for a simple pin losing his queen and
the game.
On board 2 Chris Potter fought a very long game out against Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic, but a 1-pawn difference was enough for Mehmedalija to
eventually win.
On board 3 Mendel Armerman played an interesting game against Abdulwahab
Rashid. It was very close but Abdulwahab was finally able to exert his
authority and take the point.
In other games Daniel Potter mishandled a big opening advantage to gift
Garry Lycett a win, John Seehusen gave Sam Biondo a big scare and should
have won, Alan Gray played very well against Pezhman Ghayoori only to
succumb to a desparate attack and newcomer Damien Van Den Hoff surrendered
a clear pawn advantage against Philip Drew.

Following are the results of Rd1 and the pairings for Rd2.

After only three rounds an outright leader has emerged, Abdulwahab Rashid
is the only player on 3 / 3 with a win over Don Machell.
He is followed by 5 players on 2.5-points incuding top seed Milenko
Lojanica who he meets in Rd4.

Two of players on 2.5-points, Matthew Potter and Manny Chua, are leading
the Group A section.
On 2-points, Chris Potter, Mirko Kudric and Peter Pispek are equal leaders
in Group B and also the Reserves, they each had good wins against higher
rated players in the third round.
Group C is being led by Henning Rasmussen on 2-points. He has unfortunately
been the recipient of two wins on forfeit, (through no fault of his own),
and will probably find the next few rounds pretty tough.

Following are the Rd3 results and the Rd4 pairings.

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

A reminder to members that next Wednesday 5th November is the fourth and
final of the clubs Lightning Championship tournaments.
The last four rounds of the club championship will resume the following
Wednesday 12th November with round six.

Mehmedalija Dizdarevic has spent a lot of time updating the Dandenong Chess
Club website and it is now very good with all the results of this years and
last years tournaments and progess results and pairings for this years club
championship. He was also taking photos for an upcoming article in the
Dandenong Journal which is all good publicity.
I would urge all members to view the site at http://www.dandychess.org.au/
Mehmedalija would like contributions from members, especially games to be
shown.

Not only has Mehmedalija been busy with all that but he also found time to
draw the top board game with Abdulwahab Rashid and retain equal leadership.
But the two of them were caught by Don Machell on 4 / 5 after he defeated
Matthew Potter in a long game all the spectators were convinced would be a
draw.

Following are the results of Rd5 and the pairings for Rd6.

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

After round 6 it is Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, with a powerful performance
against Don Machell, who has emerged as the sole leader with 5 / 6.
I didn't see much of the game but each time I looked Don's king appeared to
be getting deeper in trouble.
Mehmedalija will go into the final three rounds with every chance of
winning his first Dandenong Club Championship as he has already played main
challengers Milenko Lojanica, Don Machell and Abdulwahab Rashid. The next
round will be crucial as he meets the Premier Grade champion who beat him
in that event, Eddie Kocjancic. If Mehmedalija can win this he would be
look the winner, however if Eddie can repeat his previous victory it would
put himself in the lead, and the tournament would be in for a close finish.
Meanwhile Don's loss means he is rewarded with a game next week against top
seed Milenko Lojanica.

In other games Eddie Kocjancic won a close one against Ramo Burzic, after
winning a pawn and pushing them on the queenside it looked pretty good for
Eddie. But Ramo defended stubbornly and it eventually took a lot of
calculation in a tricky ending for Eddie to get the point.
Garry Lycett was fortunate to win what should have been a draw against
Mendel Armerman. Early on Garry misplayed the opening and Mendel had a
strong advantage, happy to swap pieces off Garry was pleased to even be in
a drawn minor piece and pawns ending. But Mendel hasn't been well recently
and I think the length of the game took it's toll, one crucial error being
all it takes to lose such positions.

Chris Potter unleashed the Latvian on Damien Van Den Hoff. Although having
a well deserved bad reputation it is a good choice against a player who is
new and still learning. I just hope Damien doesn't think .. "I lost, so
this opening must be good for Black" .. because he could be in for a lot of
disappointment.

The biggest upset of the night was Graham McEachern's beating of Sam Biondo
despite a 497-point rating gap.

Rating Group A is being led by Sadedin Redzepagic and Matthew Potter on 4 /
6. They are closely followed by Ramo Burzic, Rhys Hopkins and Pezhman
Ghayoori on 3.5-points with Manny Chua and Ahmet Yilmaz one point behind on
3-points.

The Reserves Championship and Rating Group B has three joint leaders, Chris
Potter, Mirko Kudric and Victor Lane are all on 3.5-points, Mendel
Armerman, Daniel Potter and Peter Pispek follow on 3-points with Ismet
Gungordu on 2.5-points.

Rating Group C has an outright leader in Graham McEachern on 3-points. His
win last night against Sam Biondo took him to the lead and will no doubt
get him rating points as well. But Graham has another tough opponent next
week while his two main challengers, Ashley Mison and Damien Van Den Hoff,
(both 2.5-points), play each other and one of them could well go to
3.5-points. Following them all on 2-points are John Seehusen, Alan Gray,
Henning Rasmussen and Craig Mather.

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

Mehmedalija Dizdarevic took a firm grip on the club championship when he
defeated Eddie Kocjancic in a very well played game last night. Mehmedalija
moves to 6 / 7 and although there are still three players within 1-point he
has now played all the players you would expect to be his main challengers.
But there are still two rounds to go and anything can happen. Next week
Mehmedalija meets Matthew Potter who is very capable of producing an upset
if Mehmedalija makes any mistakes.

In second place is Abdulwahab Rashid on 5.5-points, last night he simply
accepted Sadedin Redzepagic's two pawn sacrifices and swapped off into a
won ending. Next week Abdulwahab plays Matthew's father, Chris Potter. On
ratings Abdulwahab should win, but Chris is having a very good tournament
having lost to only Mehmedalija and Don Machell, and like his son he is
capable of causing an upset.

Equal third on 5-points are Don Machell and Matthew Potter. Facing the top
seed, Milenko Lojanica, is always a tough proposition, but Don made it look
easy, dominating from the start and winning very quickly. Although he has
lost to both Mehmedalija and Abdulwahab in this tournament Don keeps
bouncing back and staying in contention for yet another, (ninth ?), club
championship title. Matthew is playing very well and has had only one
loss, to Don, in the event. Last night Matthew defeated Ramo Burzic after
the latter found a wonderful sacrificial mating combination, only to
discover it wasn't mate, but the material was gone.

There are now seven players in equal 5th - 11th places on 4.5-points. With
only two rounds left it would seem that too many upsets would be required
for any of them to get up and win the tournament.

Leading Rating Group-A is Matthew Potter with 5-points but facing a very
tough game next week. Second is Rhys Hopkins on 4.5-points with Sadedin
Redzepagic and Manny Chua on 4-points.

Ahead in Rating Group-B, (and the Reserves Championship), are Chris Potter
and Mirko Kudric, both on 4.5-points. Both face strong opponents next week
and waiting to overtake them are Daniel Potter on 4-points then Ismet
Gungordu and Victor Lane with 3.5-points.

Newcomer Damien Van Den Hoff is outright leader in Rating Group-C after
last nights win against Ashley Mison. He is now on a very good 3.5-points,
but with Graham McEachern, Alan Gray and John Seehusen all on 3-points this
group is up for grabs.

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

The penultimate round saw Mehmedalija Dizdarevic continue to hold off the
challengers and retain his 1/2-point lead after defeating Matthew Potter.
After an unusual opening I thought Matthew was in a lot of trouble, but he
hung on for quite a while before Mehmedalija was able to exchange off into
a won rook ad pawns ending. the win took Mehmedalija to 7 / 8.

Abdulwahab Rashid overcame Chris Potter to stay within striking distance of
Mehmedalija on 6.5-points and Don Machell defeated Mirko Kudric to be
outright third with 6-points.

Meanwhile Rhys Hopkins played a strong game to beat Manny Chua, this took
him to 5.5-points and outright fourth place.
Rhys not only leads Rating Group A, but a win next week against Abdulwahab
and Rhys could finish =2nd overall.
Chasing him in Group A are Matthew Potter and Sadedin Redzepagic on
5.0-points.

Although Chris Potter and Mirko Kudric both lost they still kept their lead
in the Reserves Championship and Rating Group B with 4.5-points.
But their defeats allowed both Ismet Gungordu and Victor Lane to catch them
with wins over Ramo Burzic and Pezhman Ghayoori respectively.
As luck would have it these four meet next week with Ismet playing Chris
and Mirko playing Victor with the winners taking the prizes.
Hoping for two draws are Mendel Armerman and Daniel Potter who would then
have a chance of equal first if they themselves win their last round.

Rating Group C has it's third outright leader in as many weeks. John
Seehusen caused the upset of the round when he beat Peter Pispek and went
to 4.0-points. He leads Damien Van Den Hoff and Ashley Mison by 1/2-point
with Alan Gray and Graham McEachern a further 1/2-point back with
3.0-points.

This is a list of all players still with a chance of collecting a trophy or
prizemoney.

Club Championship:
7.0-points Mehmedalija Dizdarevic
6.5-points Abdulwahab Rashid
6.0-points Don Machell
5.5-points Rhys Hopkins

Dandenong Club Championship 2008

Congratulations to Mehmedalija Dizdarevic on winning his first club
championship at Dandenong.
It was a well deserved victory, conceding just two draws in rounds 4 & 5 he
then took the outright lead with a win over Don Machell in round 6 and was
never headed. Although chased to the end by Abdulwahab Rashid and Don he
finished with four straight wins to hold them off.

The final round produced some entertaining chess, and although Mehmedalija
finished a full point clear of second place the result was up in the air
for a long time. All the excitement centred around the top two boards. On
board one Mehmedalija and Miralem Campara were locked in a tense struggle
in a very closed position, the first material removed from the board wasn't
until move 22 when a pawn each was swapped off. Although Miralem was a bit
cramped for room I couldn't see how Mehmedalija could break through and I
thought a draw looked likely. Meanwhile on board two Rhys Hopkins and
Abdulwahab were playing a game that kept many spectators enthralled. At
first Rhys had a queen, two rooks and five pawns against two rooks, three
pieces and four pawns, then I looked and he had a queen, rook and five
pawns against two rooks, two pieces and two pawns. I must confess that for
the last two hours of the game I had absolutely no idea who was winning, or
what either sides plan was. Abdulwahab was able to connect his rooks on the
seventh rank and push a passed pawn down the middle, while Rhys was pushing
a rook pawn down the kingside.

Mehmedalija took great interest in the game, if Abdulwahab won and
Mehmedalija only drew they would both finish on 7.5 and it would go to
tiebreak. While the games were in progress I discreetly entered these
results to see who would have the higher tiebreak. Although Mehmedalija had
the higher Bucholz and Progress tiebreaks, these are secondary, this
tournaments first tiebreak is Median-Bucholz and it all revolved around the
board three game between Eddie Kocjancic and Don Machell, which was still
in progress. If Eddie won or drew Mehmedalija would have the higher
tiebreak, if Don won it would be Abdulwahab by a mere 1/2-point.

Don and Eddie had been playing a tough game, although Don seemed to have a
slightly better position Eddie was holding on and looked to have things
covered. Then Don swapped his queen for two rooks and all of a sudden a
passed central pawn became unstoppable and Don had won.

Meanwhile Abdulwahab had what spectators afterwards said was a winning
position and Mehmedalija was still struggling to breakdown Miralem. I was
wondering how I was going to explain to Mehmedalija about the tiebreaks
used when Rhys did myself and Mehmedalija a big favour by suddenly winning
a very exciting battle against Abdulwahab. I think once he realised he now
had the tournament won Mehmedalija felt able to take some chances and in
the last game of the night to finish he finally defeated a very determined
Miralem.

And so Mehmedalija was the outright tournament winner with 8-points.
Don's win and Abdulwahab's loss moved Don into outright second with
7-points.
Rhys' win capped off a wonderful tournament in which he finished with
5.5-points in his last 6 games to tie for third with Abdulwahab on
6.5-points.
Rhys lost only two games, one was to the tournament winner, and played very
good chess in the second half of the event. There is no third prize but he
did take out the Rating Group A prize ahead of Sadedin Redzepagic on
6-points and Matthew Potter with 5.5-points. Rhys led the rating group by
1/2-point going into the final round and would have been disappointed when
Milenko Lojanica forfeited his game to Sadedin, but recovered to win
against a much higher rated opponent.

Unfortunately Milenko has a habit of not turning up once he can't win a
prize and doesn't seem to care that it can affect other results. In this
case Sadedin could have won a rating group with a forfeit, (not Sadedin's
fault). His forfeit could have also significantly affected tiebreak
results. A few years ago Malcolm Pyke lost a club championship to Richard
Voon on tiebreak that was greatly affected by Milenko's brother Zdravko
forfeiting the last two rounds.

The Reserves Championship & Rating Group B came down to the four equal
leaders playing each other. Mirko Kudric won early against Victor Lane to
get to 5.5-points. This was especially sweet for Mirko who was denied
victory in the Grades tournament after a last round loss to Victor. The
other game saw Ismet Gungordu and Chris Potter fighting out a tense
struggle that came down to a rook and pawns ending. Ismet managed to get
the more active rook and gobbled up Chris' pawns. With a rook and two
connected passed pawns against a lone rook it seemed Ismet would tie with
Mirko and they would split the combined prizemoney. But a slip by Ismet
that would cost him $50 saw Chris play a clever rook sac that would result
in stalemate. By not taking the rook Ismet lost one of his pawns and the
game finished drawn.
So Mirko took the Reserves Championship outright with Chris and Ismet
joined by Daniel Potter on 5-points as joint winners of Rating Group B.

Rating Group C was also a close finish that mirrored the events in Group A.
Going into the last round John Seehusen led by 1/2-point but was
immediately passed by Ashley Mison who had already won on forfeit. In this
case Ashley's opponent, Peter Pispek, (unlike Milenko), had notified myself
and Ashley of his illness and inability to attend. But that was little
comfort to John who now had to beat Ahmet Yilmaz who is rated 452-points
above him. In a surprising twist it looked as though John himself was going
to win on forfeit, but with 5 minutes remaining Ahmet appeared. Winning a
piece early Ahmet was clearly on top, but John played probably his best
game ever to recover and knock off his higher rated opponent. John finished
with 5-points, clearly his best result in a club championship, (and only
1/2-point off tying with Mirko for the Reserves Championship !!).

Next week is the clubs breakup and presentation night. I hope all members
are able to attend to enjoy the food and congatulate the trophy winners.
The final newsletter for the year including the 1st December ratings, next

And if you read all this you could have been doing something useful, like
convincing my wife that studying the latest intricacies of the Sicilian

Because with that extra little bit of homework and preparation I just know
that next year.....

Congratulations to Mehmedalija,Don and Rhys Hopkins.
I remember Rhys being coached by Leonid Sandler about 2004 when he was a shy, young boy. It's terrific to see him grow and play well.
