You'd be favourite too seeing as Solo will be playing in Victoria.

Stupak - DeVere is interesting. White clearly has a lot of compensation out of the opening but it looks like his sac on e6 is neither necessary nor sound. Black declines it anyway and White is clearly winning until playing another unsound sacrifice 25.Bxb7+ (instead of 25.Qc4+ winning) - at which point white may seem to have an attack but is actually a rook down and getting in trouble on his own open lines.

Well done Cameron on not just making up the numbers!

Couldn't help but note DeVere-Sarfati ... 3 draw offers from white including 2 just moves away from resign time ... and all that when outrated by 800 points!

While I admire the man's optimism, many would consider this quite a breach of ettiquite ... I couldn't possibly comment!

I think this De Vere fellow thought the game was drawn as long as his pawn was defended. He's only 1400. I say good for him for not caring about his opponents rating.

I'll cut him some slack for the first one as although it is far too early and there is the huge rating difference to consider, his position is actually reasonable.

But towards the end, even if he thinks the position is drawn, why bother offering a draw in an endgame that the opponent (who is rated 800 points higher) cannot possibly lose? Opponent will decide when he's given up trying to win.

Not the rating so much, the 3 consecutive offers is potentially the problem.

Some arbiters have been known to intervene in such a situation ...

And re Kevin's points ... agree and agree.

They have, although it's worth noting there's no rule against repeat draw offers by the same player - it is only an issue if they are too close together or unreasonable.

Incidentely, on the topic of draws I once offered one to Jono in the NZ Champs after 10 moves as black in a g3 kings indian ... I got to a spot where I knew one of Nd7 and Ne8 was good and the other was bad. But I couldn't work out which was which. So I played a move (Nd7 I think) and offered a draw. Jono took it and so after the game I mentioned I was unsure which knight move to make. Jono told me I had played the wrong one, but that he wasn't familiar with it. If I had of played the right move he knew what to do and he would have declined the draw!

I'm sure there is a moral somewhere in this story but I am not sure where ...

Yes, but that complaint should only be upheld if the arbiter agrees the offers are unreasonable. Repeated draw offers by the same player if a lot has changed between the offers are not necessarily unreasonable (although the third one in this case, for starters, clearly is).

I take it no complaint was ventured in this instance?

Yeah, with Truscott, I was diverted by my usual plan of a K-side push while merely holding his Q-side counterplay, which would probably would have rolld him because his pieces were so poorly placed. Instead, I went for a P-win with 16. Qb3, underestimating his strong moves that gave up Ps for great activity.

Cam was upfloated from the Minor as the highest ACF rated player available for both weekends and wanted to play in the Champs. That helped to fill the bye.

So Garrett's answer is a good summary of the situation:

Why Queensland Championship events are not registered for Grand Prix, at least minor division?
Because the whole event, including the top division, must qualify under the rules of the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix is for one weekend type tournaments and the Qld Championship is over two weekends, so it does not qualify.

Even if the Qld Championship was held on one long weekend, it would still not qualify as it is not open to all to enter.

I think QLD Championship should be Open and Grand Prix, and it would be more interesting to have players from other states competing, specialy delight would be for QLD players to not get bored as at the moment.
Of course, as I remember GM Dejan Antic won Australian Championship but IM Stephen Solomon is promoted as AUS Champion, as he has been placed as second on the end of the tournament.
The way you doing is old fashioned, to complicated and boring.

I'm not bored ! I'm actually enthralled, we have the possibility of a 12 year old state champion.

I don't think we would have a lot more players if it was decided to make it a category one grand prix event.

I don't think there would be interstate competitors turning up anyway, none turned up for the Qld Open in March.

Looks like Yi is hot favourite to become 2008 Qld champion !

I think regardless of what happens today, there are going to be several people walking around scratching their heads saying 'if only!'.

Brodie playing confidently in the minor.

Cheers
Garrett.

Too may draws, Jono. Too many people playing drawing lines against the Marshall? (That is a problem that at a lower level I have faced.)

Congrats to the winner Tony and second place-getter Yi, and also Garvin for keeping us all informed.

Commiseration to Jono. We all have disappointing tournaments time to time.

Too may draws, Jono. Too many people playing drawing lines against the Marshall?
Many have tried that and failed.

(That is a problem that at a lower level I have faced.)
No, (hopefully temporary) inability to convert big positional advantages against the two ahead of me. Against Truscott, I was distracted by a P win on the other side of the board, and he obtained strong counterplay by a well-judged jettisoning of that P. Liu held on grimly and well.

It's notable that Liu lost to Truscott by playing the horribly antipositional Stonewall with White then exchanging off the good B, much as Anthony Ker did 20+ years ago against me (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1450693).

You're not wrong. Definitely one to redistribute a lot of my rating points.

That was in Upper Hutt, so it is likely you were there.

Very unfortunate, especially considering that the tournament winner got a win by default. Potentially costing Liu the title.

Well done Tony & Brodie. both Redcliffe Chess Club players

Very unfortunate, especially considering that the tournament winner got a win by default. Potentially costing Liu the title.
Tony didn't feel that great about winning the last round game by default, but he was certainly not to blame. He outclassed Liu in their individual game both strategically (9.Bxf5? was an atrocious positional blunder leaving him with a bad B and a backward P on a half-open file) and tactically (34... Qxe2+!).

You have a good memory for something so long ago '_

Actually, I believe people should be free to redistribute their own goods, just not someone else's.

I agree, Mr Glicko has been very good at redistributing my rating points ;)

And, at the, er, considerable risk of calling the kettle black, too many draws Jono :)
