Hello everyone,

The Melbourne Chess Club Open commenced on this Monday 1st September. After it became apparent that not many had turned up, or seemed to be going to turn up, I had a discussion with the players. The extent of it was, that we would run Round 1 over two nights, the 1st and the 8th, and then in the third week, the 15th, the field would be combined, to form the pairings of a unified Round 2. This was eventually accepted.

************************************************** ************************************************** ********************

So along with the presentation of results below, I also make a request, that for this event, should people wish to join in on the second round, could they please contact me, Malcolm Pyke, on 0408 150196, or PM me here, or send me an email through this site, so that you might be included.

************************************************** ************************************************** ********************

There is also the additional issue of the telephone at the MCC premises that has not been commented upon. We are in the process of changing telephone providers, and some confusion led to the last service being disconnected, prior to the new service commencing. Owing to this the clubrooms have no working phone at this time, but it will be the same number when the service is restored. The club apologises for any difficulties this may have caused people in the last few weeks.

13/10/08 Round 6
20/10/08 Round 7
27/10/08 Round 8

There are some thoughts that there may be a round 9 on Monday 3rd November, but this seems not likely as it is the day before the Melbourne Cup ( horses, this time ! ) and there seems very likely to be a weekender on the weekend around this day and on Cup Day. I feel confident that it wll go ahead, as Barboros Kara, one of the main, if not the main, long term organiser of this event, told me so on Monday 1st September, prior to Round 1.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Hello everyone,

The Melbourne Chess Club Open commenced on this Monday 1st September. After it became apparent that not many had turned up, or seemed to be going to turn up, I

I am sure thus unfortunate "disappointment" has occured despite MCC's outstanding promotional efforts....Surely a lot of players were contacted in long in advance and invited to play. Surely the event was well publicized online throughout chess forums and via email lists...

Anyway..i am going to be on my way to the chess club tonight...and joining in :)

Michael, hi,

first, have a good time on the weekend at MCC.

second, the Round 2 pairings that I posted initially were based on an incorrect Round 1 result I was given.

And now that the results are correct, yes you are playing Richard.

did sort of guess you were joking with this though,

ummm when did Round 3 get changed?

Sorry, Malcolm my mistake. After seeing some intial pairings, I did not realise that Richard was also on 2 points So i autmotically assumed that only 4 ppl are on 2 points and that i am going to play John Davenport.:D (i guess i was doing the arbiter's job trying to work out my own pairings)

See you at MCC tomorrow

What happened on board 1.. And Michael, did you end up taking my challenge of playing 1.e4....

On board 1...I beat Rujevic. It was a crazy game (1.e4 style) but it did start with 1.d4 "grins"

Speaking of what happened..would be nice to have all the results up....including postponed game from round 2 between Rujevic and Skiotis

Here is the game. Lots of errors..but an exiting struggle

Baron - Rujevic

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bh4 c5 4. f3 Qa5+?! - pretty useless check 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5 d6 7.e4 Nbd7 8.Nbd2 g6 9.f4 Bh6?! - Mirko is clearly not happy with his position and trying to complicate the matters by playing for tricks. 10. Qf3 b5 11.g4? - no need to play this move. I should have simply completed development instead. Therefore, i have to admit that Mirko succeeded in throwing me off balance by playing Bh6. I am starting to play unjustifiably agressively 11...Bg7 12. Bg3 Bb7 13. g5 Nh5 14. Bf2 f6?!! - f6 is hard to evaluate. Objectively the move is clearly not the best one. However, it is a good way to throw me further off the balance 15. gxf6 ?!! - again..i am sure i could have punished f6...but i was not sure how :) Therefore, i decided (and probably for the best) to choose the safest of all lines. 15...Ndxf6!? - Black keeps playing for complications - he is provoking me to play e5! 16.

16. Nh3?! - definitely not best! There must be better squares for the knight. 16...Bh6
17.Be3 Rf8 18. Qe2 a6 19. Bg2 Qc7 20. 0-0 Qd7 21.b4!? - during the game i was very proud of this move as it frees black squares for my Bishop and Queen. Whether its strong or not is another story :D . 21... cxb4 22. cxb4 Ng4 23. Ng5 Bxg5 24. fxg5 Nxe3 25. Qxe3 Qg4 26. Qb6! - finally i play a strong move! I had to see this move when while considering Ng5 26...Rxf1 27.Rxf1 Nf4 28.Rxf4 Qxf4 29. Qxb7 Qe3+ 30. Kf1!?! - King should be active! therefore i would rather bring it towards the center than to h1! 30. Ra7? - after this move - the game is over. The rook is out of play on a7. 31. Qc8+ Kf7 32. Bh3 Qxg5 33. Nf3 Qe3 - black has to watch out for white's queen coming to b8 and winning the rook. 34. Kg2?! - probably checking on e6 first was stronger. 34...e5 35 Qh8 Qh6 36. Qb8 Qe3 37. Qxd6 Qxe4 38. Qe6+ Kg7 39. d6 Qe2+ 40.Kg3 e4 41. Qe5+ Kh6 42.Qf4+ Kg7 43. Ng5 Qe1+ 44. Kg2 h6 45. Ne6+ Kg8! - the only move as Kh7 is losing by fource to d7 46. Nc7 Qe2+ 47. Qf2 Qxf2+ 48. Kxf2 Kf7 49. Ke3 a5 50. Nd5 axb4 51. d7 Ra8 52. Nxb4 Ra3+ 53. Kxe4 Rxh3 54. d8 Q 1-0

MCC is full of surprises as always :).

Yesterday when I came to MCC to play my round 5 game i discovered that:
a) a postponed game from round 3 is yet to be played making all parings look funny (e.g. Skiotis could be on 100% but he was playing board 3)
b) there was a new player on board 6 :) This is truly facinating! I am curious what happens if he wins a few games...and a rating prize :)

To make things even funnier: one of the players told me that he is still not sure whether the tournament is an 8 or 9 round swiss. When i told him it is going to be an 8 round swiss, he told me not to be so sure as it is "yet to be decided". Isn't it facinating stuff? :).

On a positive side, these days - MCC is friendlier than ever. Mr Voon is smiley and polite, A well-known chess organiser (lets not name him) blundered a rook instead of winning his game in 1 move..yet his friendly mood was not affected (not a single F..word was used to discuss that game!). How good is that! :D

any results michael ?

Yesterday when i left, many of the games were still going.
The only results that i can recall were:

Beckman - Ivanov 1-0
Lysett-Wiss 1-0
Kaplan- Anton 1-0
Fitzpatrick-Baron 0-1
Podbury-Kara 1-0

It looked like a good day for White...4 wins and one loss.
Out of the remaining games:
Rujevic-Kalish - Mirko was pawn up so he probably won.
Voon-Skiotis was a complicated position with chances for both sides.

I think John Davenport and Roger McCart won on forfeight against Papadinis and Drew.

Why doesn't a player of the stature of Michael Baron play in the Victorian Championship? Certainly a strong contender for the title.

Why doesn't a player of the stature of Michael Baron play in the Victorian Championship? Certainly a strong contender for the title.

Many many reasons...
1) Too busy to play so many games
2) Do not like 'travelling around venues" atmosphere
3) Playing such a strong tournament requires some preparation and being 'fresh" before the games.

If that wasn't a clean sheet, then the expression loses it's meaning!
Congratulations Michael, and I think it's time to move into a more serious stage in your chess career.
I agree with Eagle about your potential strength.
In fact, I do not believe that (apart from Igor) there is a player in Victoria at this stage who can last the distance against a serious Michael Baron.
I hope you will find some time from your professional career to devote to Chess.
Cheers and good luck!

Hi Malcolm
The results of the last round aren't there! Of course they can be calculated on the basis of comparing the final point allocation to the final round draw, but that isn't that easy for some people.
Cheers
PS
By the way excellent reporting of the tournament throughout and thanks
