Daylight saving kicked in neatly at a midpoint between last round Saturday and first round Sunday. So we were warned and warned again. But with all the usual warnings about mobile phones, completing and submitting scoresheets, car parking etc who listens anyway?

One player rolled up minutes before forfeit time for his first round on the Sunday and somewhat stunned, gave considerable time odds to his young opponent. He said he just hadn't got around to changing his clocks at home.

For my part I'd carefully adjusted my watch to the exact second using the date and time preferences on my Mac at home. Unfortunately our DOP decided that just swinging the hand around on the Centre's clock would do. I lost a couple of minutes as the round started early and my protests got me nothing but a cheerful smirk.

Next year I'm going to do some unplugging, as even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

7 Searle, Zachary SA 5208466 1595 3.5 23:W 12:W 13:W 5:L 1:D 2:L

I find this interesting.

Cameron on 4 points beats Searle on 3.5 points in the standings.
The difference between the fields that the two players met is vast.
The sum of the numerical standings of their opponents is Cameron's 80 whereas Searle's is 55.

Just sayin'. Just observin'. Not concludin'.

One of the unfortunate side effects of swiss tournaments with a small number of rounds. Both players results were impressive when their ratings were taken into consideration, Zachary Searle especially so. Established players tremble in fear! Your rankings are in danger as Zachary's rating has gone up by over 400 in the last year and is still many hundreds of points too low!

The point of a Swiss is to find the winner and places below first often have to be taken with a grain of salt based on raw score. This is a particularly extreme case of a player who has performed superbly in the first five rounds being leapfrogged because of a last round loss by a player coming up from midfield.

Incidentally I have Searle's PR at 2039 and Cameron's at 1809.

Hi WilliamAS and Kev

I understand, agree and am familiar with all you have said. Nevertheless that is the first time I have that dynamic vary that wildy. For instance even a ghost next round couldn't have brought them together even if Searle had played #1 while Cameron had played against #24.

Apart from all of that (which isn't important), the focus, as you have said should be on both young men's performances
