I have grandchild (3 years old) that i want to teach playing chess.
Looking for recommendation how to start, book suggestion, any source on Internet and so on.
Somebody told me about chess pawn. What is it?

Can I respectfully suggest at age 3 you not try to teach the child chess rather something like "Foxes and Hounds" which uses a chess board and teaches children some basics of using 4 "hounds" together as one unit - this is excellent training its fast and enjoyable for young children.

Piaget's theory of child evolution suggests they are unable to make useful abstract thoughts till about the age of four but i would certainly introduce chess via the method above so that by the time they are 5 or so it then becomes a looked forward to treat to be shown the mystery of chess.

Just some thoughts.

kindest regards

I dont know if it would help teach a three year old but....

The exeter chess club website has a section for juniors?!?

Stick "exeter chess club" in Google and you should find it...

My kids started learning chess with the excellent computer game "Learn to Play Chess with Fritz and Chesster", and I recommended this to quite a lot of kids - with very positive feedback. If someone is interested - it is worth looking for feedback e.g. at amazon.com.

But I would agree that a kid still needs to be at least 4 years old.

hm... I'm teaching a hyperactive 6-year-old to play in a few days... it's going to be... fun.
