It was so much fun the first time, we are doing it again! A phrase that could apply to so many things! In this case, we are talking about that noblest of games, chess. Now that you are focused, we’ll move on.

Blayney Chess Club conducted their first Open Tournament last year. This was well received with many local businesses lending support and 34 players taking part. So with a successful launch, we shift to the running of the 2nd Blayney Chess Open on 6 & 7 September 2008 at the Blayney Bowling Club.

This year’s event is honoured to have been selected as host of the title of NSW Country Champion. This is a prestigious title dating back to 1956 and with our local champion having been a three time winner in 1987, 2004 and co-champion in 2005, we are hoping that this years winner will be a member of our own clan of Blayney Barbarians. Though there will be a host of players planning on taking the spoils of this title back to their own lair.

This year’s Open winner will be looking at an increased reward of four hundred dollars, so maybe even last year’s winner, Lee Jones, will be back to defend his title.

Looking forward to seeing many of the faces of last year, plus many new ones at this year’s event, as it will be conducted in the same friendly vein with a little bit of a competitive twist thrown in for fun.

Sounds like you have a demanding job in the outback or bush, cause instead of a trial period, you have a trail period :P ;)

See Phil B,

As Gunner would say, it is only kinky the first time and now you are back for more :uhoh:

 at GG's comment.

 at eclectic's suggestion, we have had trains since the 1860's! If you fly in, I will pick you up at the airport, it is only 20 min drive for me!

Have drawn up a provisional prizemoney table, http://blayneychess.com/08_prize_money.htm
This is based on 30 players, currently have 24 on the list and seeing as there were 34 players last year, I hope that 30 is a conservative guess :)
Anyone wishing to book accommodation should do so soon, one of our motels is nearing full capacity.

Hi Phil,

I could not find some details about the event.

1) When does it start? Or more specifically when one should arrive to the venue to be included in the first round draw?
2) How many rounds?
3) When do the rounds start?

And also

How much time does it take to drive from Sydney to Blayney?

Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up Drug. Website is now fixed.
Schedule is at http://www.blayneychess.com/08_bly_open/08_schedule.htm

Just in case, Player Registration/Sign In is from 8:30-9:30am with first round at 10:00 am.

Six rounds.

Sat 10am - 1pm - 4pm Sun 9:30am - 12:30pm - 3:30pm

I usually make the trip in 2.5 - 3 hrs from the end of the F4. So just add that to what you would expect to drive to Penrith.

What is the Bells Line Of Rd via Richmond like?
About the same time and distance, unless of course that is the quickest exit from where you are.
Bells Line is a bit quieter, but it really comes down to your own preferences.

Must have been a momentary hiccup with Bigpond. The site is there as of a minute ago.

Will stick a list of entrants up tomorrow, will just check on a few maybes to see if they become definites. At the moment, the list has 44 names on it.

Wow, that is impressive! Actually I can think about at least another 5 highly likely entrants. This tournament is likely to cross the 50 mark, which I think must be some kind of record. A round of applause for Phil guys.

I am still have a few questions. :)

I did not notice any mentining about discounts anywhere. I understand that even if one shows up on the day he will pay the same entry fee. Is this correct?

I noticed the entry form on the website, somewhere on the form one has to click how much needs to be paid. Do you have to pay online or you can pay once you arrive in the venue? What most people do? If most people are expected to pay when they arrive then the list of actual entrants I guess could be shorter.:)

If you enter online can you arrive at 10 am just before the first round and miss the registration?

Thanks in advance.

Correct Vlad, no early entry discount.

Correct again, no online payments, my web skills aren't up to that level :)

If I know that you are coming, I will put you in the draw for the 1st round. Please note that we started on time last year and I will do it again this year :) So if you use that option, make sure you are there by 10 to 10 as your clocks will be running at 10am :)

On that previous list, six or so may be considered maybes, the others all are likely. This means that if we lose a few, that should be balanced by a few that I don't know are coming. For example, last year I think my early forecast was for 38 and we had 34 play. So names don't go on the list unless I am fairly confident they are coming.

Holding steady at 44, seems to be an addition then a deletion, so get on the website, http://blayneychess.com/08_bly_open/08_bly_open.htm , get on the phone, 6368 3407 or 0439 598 203, or email us at blayneychess@bigpond.com to get yourselves in for a tremendous weekend away from it all in the serenity of Blayney.

Please note, that cheap accommodation at the Exchange Hotel is going fast, the proprieters advised yesterday that they have been overwhelmed with chess players and only have two rooms left.

thx for the update phil :)

Did you forget to add yourself to the list? :P

A bit of an oversight I reckon :)

In reality, I find that playing and arbiting a not a good mix for me, usually both suffer :)

Now, I just have to convince the missus that the cost of an arbiter could be counted as my entry fee into next year's tournament. :D

OK folks, have posted full details on our website, you can start at http://www.blayneychess.com/08_bly_open and work from there. I have just checked, it needs a little tidying up, but all workable.

One thing I am pleased about is that I think 8 people left Blayney with $180 or better for their efforts on the weekend. I think that is a good achievement for a small tournament, even though most of it went back to Canberra :)

By the way Phil....

That first round draw is incorrect! I played against Bradley Timms in the first round and I won!

Unless two of us sat down at wrong boards...

But I can remember the draw saying bradley timbs for me!?

And your cross table above is correct.....

Thanks Trent, will check it, I probably didn't replace the dummy one I ran last Friday, to see how to put it on the web pages (ooops :) )
