Secondly, Richard Goldsmith (1134) had achieved two draws against much, much higher-rated opponents in R1 and R2 (and he should have won both those games!). He came up against Ian Birchall (1944) and at one stage had a winning position, but couldn't find the right line, although he did manage to win Ian's queen:

What happened in the result of this game? Did Richard lose on time, because I am not sure why he resigned after Rc1?

I am assuming so ... but I will await confirmation from others (Watto or Dougy) as I wasn't there when it happened.

There were a few interesting games last night too.
I'll post the results when I get a chance later on tonight or Spiny might too if he receives them before I can.

I’ll be interested to see how Jamie Cross’ game against Douglas Stones ended. Jamie was still just winning when we left but he was playing a much higher rated player.

The board one struggle revolved around who had the worst head cold I think! Guy's box of tissues looked impressive but Kok-Siong didn't sound too good either. Quite an interesting game which ended in a draw.
Most other games went according to rating although the increasingly resourceful Steven Wills beat Tony Waller after the latter blundered.

... the increasingly resourceful Steven Wills ...
I agree totally ... I've had two games against Steven this year ... he was winning both of them, before letting me back into the game in the late middlegame or endgame. He's got a few nice scalps lately, as has Richard Goldsmith and Jamie Cross (e.g. in interclub). Some of these 1100-1200 types are punching well above their published rating increasingly often.

Thanks for the kind comments Watto and Spiny :D My head will need popping soon.

Here is the game between Tony and myself.

1.e4 d6 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 c5 4.Bc4 Nc6 5.d4 cxd4 6.Nxd4 Bd7 7.O-O g6 8.f4 Qb6 9.Be3 Ng4 10.Na4 Qb4 11.Nxc6 bxc6 12.Bd4 e5 13.b3 exd4 14.Qxd4 d5 15.exd5 O-O-O 16.Qxa7 Re8 17.Nb6+

I haven't gone over the game properly, but on move 8:F4 was my blunder and I was on the back foot for most of the game. My thinking immediatly after that move was "crap, I've blundered again" but a club lesson from an IM about being resourcefull came to mind. I searched and searched for a way out of it and initially I couldn't find a plan. I decided to go on the attack, no real plan but I figured I had a lost game and decided I was going to go out shooting rather then hide in the corner and wait to be put down. As you can see my attack was so shaky often haveing 3 or 4 pieces totally hanging with any wrong move costing me a couple of pieces. As I was analyizing my game, I kept on mentally beating myself up with how many pieces I had hanging, but then I noticed something, some of tony's pieces weren't defended very well. His 2 rooks and his queen but most importantly, his king didn't have any real defense. I found my plan and went for it, knowing that my attack was built on a deck of cards, I had nothing to lose 14: Qxd4 put me right back into the game and then it was tony to feel some pain :D. Tony's castling on move 15 is his blunder which pretty much gave me the game, although I nearly missed QxA7 as I was so focused on getting a rook or a queen. At the time I felt I played badly but looking over it, I am very happy to walk away with such a scalp.

I must admit, Tony was not well and obviously not playing at his full strength. I hope he get's better soon.

11...Qxc4 would have left you still with a couple of pieces hanging, so I'm not so sure 11...bxc6 was all that good for Black. I'll leave it for one of the Sicilian specialists here to comment on 8.f4 and whether its a good idea or not. But congratulations on a great win, it'll do your rating a power of good!

I'm not sure myself what happened in the Richard Goldsmith-Ian Birchall game. I would be surprised if Richard would resign without making a queen-losing blunder - he has as healthy never-say-die attitude. Richard is sometimes on these forums, so perhaps he could reply.

Our club president is a very competitive person and I think we all pick up on that vibe and bring it to our games. As I'm a newbie I can't compare Croydon to other clubs but I feel we have a strong culture of improving and therefore many of us are constantly improving faster then our ratings are.

Yes, I’ve certainly got that impression since getting there… it’s a nice mix of improving adults and improving juniors. I’d give N.Y. Wong a lot of credit too for his support and coaching.

Ah, thanks. Wasn't the best game I've played or my opponent has played for that matter! Was a blunderfest ... I was getting crushed and fought back to a winning position (but then threw a piece away very obviously right at the end... in time trouble my opponent didn't see it.) Anyway, I'm pleased to have come away with a win.
