View Full Version : 2008 ANU Open (26-27 July)

Information about the 2008 ANU Open can now be found at the link below. A few points -

The venue is Fenner Hall, which has hosted the ANU Open and Doeberl Cup previously, including 2007 when the intended venue, the School of Art, suffered storm damage. This is less convenient for people staying in Civic than the School of Art but is still in walking distance for reasonably fit players. There are also buses along Northbourne Ave.

Someone (I think it was Garvin) reported problems with the colours last year with unreadable text where intended light backgrounds were dark. I couldn't reproduce this and hence couldn't test it so it's possible that it will happen again. If so, do a search on "brochure" and click on the link to open the PDF which has all the information.

The entry fee for adults is the same as last year at $75, not $70 as erroneously stated in the flyer distributed at the Doeberl, however there is a $10 discount for entries received by Friday 18 July.

Any queries should be directed to Shun Ikeda.

There is a small change to the brochure to include a number for direct deposit of entry fees (other methods are still available). See link below.

I want to play but I think other things might keep me from it. Although it might give me a chance to visit the Canberra site I do the books for at work...

:hmm:

OK someone needs to explain to me why - for the ANU as for Doeberl earlier this year - my youngest child has a rating when this is her entry on the ACF master list:

1665666 Unr ACT Smith, Aislinn

but this is her entry on the ACF trn file

Smith Aislinn ACT 100 1665666 19980512

Is she rated or not?

The rating is indicative of the (lack of) playing strength. I have children with Rapid Ratings of 100 at my school club and that seems to be the point at which the number is "published."

Why does she show as unrated on the Master list but rated on the trn file?

I don't expect her to be up for any prizes and a single win would be a triumph in the event, but if she is unrated she can compete for any unrated prize in an event (this or others, incl ACTJCL) but if she is rated she can't.

So what is it and why do the two lists differ?

PS a similar strength player from my school club - Emma Dunstone - appears similarly @ 100 on the trn but unrated on the master list.

This tourney will be a good opportunity for smerdon to gain a few easy(well at least easier than usuall) rating points and get closer to the illusive GM title

It's not a FIDE rated tournament.

David will most likely get the required ratings points at the Olympiad.

Intuition

I didnt know that..thanks for correcting... hrmmm...the olympiad will be an interesting mix of strong and weak players I guess its would be difficult to get 37 points there :hmm:

David is playing at the Kings of Chess Surfers Paradise Open 29/30/31 August which is FIDE rated so hopefully he will garner a few points there and so make his task of gaining the remaining points at the olympiad a bit easier.

Ian Rout had posted a list of those who had already entered on the 21st July, showing 10 players rated above 1900?

How much more notice do you want?

black
26-07-2008, 08:25 PM
That is short notice when playing would require asking for time off work. Also I meant 2200+ players. There were not so many of them, I think.

In hindsight, I should have played. I need some practice.

If your expectations are that you want 'alot' of 2200 plus players in the event, then there will be only a 'few' events that will meet your expectations. This is simply because we only have a few 2200+ in Australia.

Unfortunately the bulk of the field, including the top, is not known several weeks in advance. This is the case with all tournaments except for events like Doeberl or SIO where GMs are being recruited from overseas. You have to form a judgement based on prior years.

Anyway Round 4 standings for the Open and Minor are below. See chessexpress (http://chessexpress.blogspot.com/) for some reports and the provisional Round 5 draw.

That is short notice when playing would require asking for time off work. Also I meant 2200+ players. There were not so many of them, I think.

In hindsight, I should have played. I need some practice.

It looks to me like you fit right into the root of your own problem ...

You chose not to enter in advance because you were waiting on a published field of players of an appropriate strength.

As relatively few chess players want to commit to a tournament in advance, you could not know who else was playing any more than they could know that you would play if only you knew they were planning to :wall:

Final outcome for you = if only I'd known

Final outcome for organisers = no real idea of how many are turning up at all and a huge, inexplicable jump on numbers from last year = late start (or normal start, as we are talking about chess :P )

I agree with Libby2. It's fairly safe to expect a Class 4 GP event that isn't in the middle of the Simpson Desert to attract at least some strong players, and even if it doesn't, why not enter anyway; if the field is weak you might even win it!

Good work, Phil. Sathya must be some ankle-biter! 2nd ain't shabby at all in the murderous mire of upandcomings

Ian, congrats on your round 6 draw on top of yesterday's efforts. Losing to Iggy and Smerdon - pfft! what's the matter with you man? ;)

You've both done very well. Carry on!

Very good result in a U1600 div with some very promising juniors, Phil. Also even with only .5/3 on the final day, Ian's result is indeed still a good one.

I'm very pleased to see Arianne playing (albeit below her normal strength) as there was some cynical speculation that having just made the 20 games requirement for the Olympiad she wouldn't play again before that event.

Not so pleased to see another exodus of ratings points out of the Tassie pool as Glen gets another severe bout of junioritis (following on from a similar case in the Tas Open).

Thank you all for the congrats. My 'success' did create a dramatic upswing in the average age of the prizewinners in the Minor.

Sathya was on fire all weekend, playing by his own description "hack chess". It certainly was working for him. I recall looking over in the final round and seeing that he was a piece down with only two advanced pawns, maybe one of them could claim passed status, as any sort of compensation with his Queen attacked by a strong knight and thinking that he may be in trouble. I then looked at the clocks, he had 44 mins left to his opponent's 1 min 34 secs! Sure enough, those pawns created a bit of havoc and his opponent made a few mistakes and resigned soon after. A thoroughly deserved win, his chess was electric, it may be considered 'garbage' by traditional standards, but most effective in this grade and time control. I was considering challenging him to a rematch at chess boxing

Anton had a good tournament though he could be accused of being 'two' gentlemanly :) Both of his losses were to the female brigade.

Some of the top seeds experienced some unexpected losses in the middle rounds, and with 57 players, most of them fairly good for an Under 1600 competition, it was always going to be tough to make up lost ground.

Sophie Eustace was a bright spark from SA who had a brilliant tournament and aged 15, one thinks that she should develop into a very strong player in coming years.

Most of my games went the distance, not allowing me to see too much of the Open games, but it contained many games that were hotly discussed in the after rounds post mortems. Ian Rout and Milan Grcic flew the flag proudly for the under rated older players in the Open with their good performances. Congrats to both gentlemen.

The organisers, Shaun Press, Paul Dunn, Shun Ikeda and their band of helpers earnt full honours with an exceptionally well run weekend. The turn out of players emphasises this as players like to play in nice tournaments.

I hope to see everyone again next year.

David Smerdon dropping only half a point in that field is a good result.

He's 12 so still time to improve a bit more as well

Was the event FIDE rated? If so Smerdon will be just that much closer to a GM title.

Was the event FIDE rated? If so Smerdon will be just that much closer to a GM title.

It can't be FIDE rated as the time limit is too fast (60min + 10spm Fischer) and there are 4 rounds on the first day.
