Great game, the Nb4 was a surprise

Trent Parker

Yeah I thought that that was the only way I could play for Quality counterplay.

Hey Jono Mate!

Any chance you could give this game the once over? Give us some comments? Thanks in advance if you can.

Hey Jono Mate!

OK Dilly, some notes below.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 b6 {?! Black should not allow e5 so easily; the point of the Nimzo is to prevent it with piece play. 4... c5, d5, 0-0 are normal} 5.e4 Bb7 6.Bd3 Bxc3+ 7.bxc3 c5 8.Ne2 d6 9.0-0 0-0 {? looks like an oversight, losing one of the Ps sheltering the K. 9... Nc6 or ... e5 look essential, but White's central and K-side play is more advanced than in related Sämisch lines} 10.e5 dxe5 11.dxe5 Ng4 12.Bxh7+ Kh8 13.Be4 Nc6 14.f4 Qh4 15.h3 Nh6 16.f5 {?! looks like it overlooked Black's strong counter. 16. Be3-f2 looks better, and the extra P should win. The move played allows Black to recover material equality, and turns a much better position into a double-edged one} 16... Nb4 {!} 17.cxb4 Bxe4 18.Qc3 cxb4 {maybe refrain from this exchange, so the Q can retreat to e7} 19.Qxb4 Bxf5 20.Rf4 Qg5 21.Rd4 Qg6 22.Rh4 Be4 23.g4 Kg8 24.Rh5 Bf3 25.Nd4 Bb7 26.Bxh6 Qe4 27.Qd2 gxh6 28.Rxh6 Qh1+ {29... Qxe5 controls a lot of ground, but White can coolly play 30.Re1 Qg3+ 31. Kf1; or 30... Qg7 31. Rh5. White's open K turns out to be quite well protected by the pieces, and Black has to watch his own K} 29.Kf2 Qg2+ 30.Ke1 Qg1+ {White's reverse psychology, inadvertent or not, put Black off entering the endgame, which would allow some counterchances because White's KR is out of play, isolated Ps are good targets for Rs, and the B is better than the N in this open position. It turns out that White's K can find safety even in this apparently open position, because his pieces cover many checking squares} 31.Ke2 Qg2+ 32.Kd1 Qf1+ 33.Kc2 Qxc4+ 34.Kb2 Be4 35.Rc1 Qd3 36.Qg5+ Bg6 37.Nxe6 {! a powerful move, not only exploiting the overworked Pf7 but carrying a lethal threat ...} 37... Rfc8 38.Rh8+ {! 38... Kxh8 39.Qh6+ Bh7 40.Qg7++ is forced} 1-0
