Round 2 of the BHCC autumn cup continues with some startling results. Last week we saw the demise of FM Geoff Saw, this week lower rated winners were Michael Chang and Isaac Ng. Is this the Stanning effect? Due to a nasty ear infection which left him partially deaf the arbiter missed a mobile phone transgression. The lucky escapee was newcomer Ronnie Ducusin. Next week the acceleration comes off and the tournament will hopefully steer into calmer waters. [I think I am getting the hang of chess reporting cliches]. See the website for full results.

Isaac Ng is very dangerous and improving rapidly.

The preliminary pairings for round 3 are now on the BHCC website. http://www.boxhillchess.org.au
With the acceleration removed the irrepressible Isaac Ng is the only bottom half player who made it into the top group. The featured game Wallis v Yu
[Derek] should prove an interesting contrast in style

I see that Wallis did win that game against Lindberg that the game viewer was incorrectly showing as a win to Lindberg.

French Closed Tarrasch strikes again (though the rating gap probably had a little to do with it too!)

After the free night before the Begonia tournament the Autumn Cup players are set to return to the fray. The game Wallis v Schön will the live broadcast. The results of round 5 and the draw for round 6 are now available on the BHCC web site http://boxhillchess.org.au. Round 6 is scheduled for March 28 and players unavailable for that round due to interstate commitments need to contact their opponents urgently requesting rescheduling.

After the postponement hassles of the previous round, the final round should bring everyone together. The broadcast game between the 2 young lions of the Box Hill Chess Club should be a cracker. Bobby must win to win the tournament something he has so far been unable to do. Chris only needs to draw. FM Geoff Saw after his draw against Chris in the postponed game from round 6 is pretty well out of contention. His opponent Douglas Lindberg however can still come equal first if Bobby wins or Chris draws.
See the Box Hill website: www.boxhillchess.org.au for full details and the live broadcast on Friday

Due to his iminent departure for the Philippines Francisco Chung had to withdraw from the final round. We will miss him at the Box Hill Chess Club. The amended draw is now on the BHCC website

The outcome
And so Geoff Saw never quite made up for the loss he suffered in round 1.
A seven rounder makes it hard to recover from a set back. Chris Wallis seemed comfortable on board one and played some interesting games. In the last round I thought Bobby Cheng had an early edge but as it turned out he will have to wait a bit longer for his first win against Chris. On the lower boards, Isaac Ng had some good wins, Elliott Renzies has returned to some sort of form but as mentioned elsewhere Vanja's return to chess has been sensational.
Readers should keep their eye on our micro brigade which was well represented at this tournament.
