Well played Trent. What an evil knight! And you created some nice threats with it.

I bombed out yesterday – 2 out 4 became 2 out of 7! Had many won games in the event, including against 2 much higher rated players than me (Johnny Bolens and Ben Harris), but failed to win them -blundered too much, got swindled in one totally won game v an over 2000 player (Bolens). Fra from the first time Bolens has swindled someone and no doubt it won't be the last! Never mind…at least I have the chance to be coached by a Grand Master! One of the most enjoyable parts of the event for me was chatting with Dejan Antic (who did not have his best tournament by a long shot). I think some of the blame for my poor show goes to me spending too much time on Chess Chart Forum! Its too addictive! Trent, on the other hand did very well and won a grade prize. BTW can I remind people to support his "Keep Dejan in Australia campaign" through posting comments on his blog at the web site mentioned in his previous post.

J. Adams - J. Bolens, Round 4.
1.e4 b6 2.d4 Bb7 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Bd3 Be7 6.0-0 d6 7.Re1 0-0 8.e5 Ne8 9.Ne4 Bxe4 10.Bxe4 d5 11.Bd3 c5 12.c3 g6 13.Bh6 Ng7 14.Qd2 Re8 15.Ng5 cxd4 16.Qf4 Nf5 17.Bxf5 exf5 18.Qh4 Nd7 19.e6 fxe6 20.Rxe6 Nf6 21.Qxd4 Nh5 22.Rae1 Bxg5 23.Rxe8+ Qxe8 24.Rxe8+ Rxe8 25.Qxd5+ Kh8 26.g4?? Re1+ 27.Kg2 Nf4+ 0-1.

Of course 26 Qd4+ would save the piece and at least draw the game. If 26...Nf6 27 f3 and if 27...Bxh6 then 28 Qxf6+. So Black has to play 26...Kg8 27 Qc4+ Kh8 28 Bxg5 Re1+ 29 Qf1 Rxf1+ 30 Kxf1 and I emerge with an extra pawn and ending I should win. If I did not see that I had 27 Qd5+ followed by Qd4 + game over, draw by repetition. White must have had more than one way to win with a beautiful position after move 21, but sadly found the only way to lose, which should have been a way to (at least) draw!! The ending after 30 Kxf1 would have been nice for me I think, with B v N and an extra pawn. Oh so sad!

I'll do some experimenting and see if I can get this into a PGN format.

I think in retrospect my terrible peformance of 0% on Sunday can be largely put down to not being able to get out of my mind the horror of the finish of my last game on Saturday evening v Johnny Bolens. Also manging to lose to Ben Harris when I was a solid pawn ahead and I was the one with the play, not him. But for my Christian faith I think I would be in a sorry state today. :( But never mind- today is a new day!:) And there's coaching tonight!:)

BTW the last weekender I played I was also on 2 out of 4 after 4 rounds but on that occasion I won all my Sunday games and came third equal! That was Mingara 2007, mentioned on my web site. From 100% to 0% is a bit of a comedown...

Yes, on the Saturday at Mingara 2007 I lost a wild and woolly game to one T. Parker...I still have the score. I transformed a plus position after move 17 into a minus one after move 18!

Keep up the blog, TCN. Its a good read.

Seems I should have played 8...Bxh2 9. Nxe6 Qh4+ with the typical Mestel complications.
