Hello everyone,

Here is the first email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

New Venue;
John Pandazopoulos Hall, 78 Power Road, Doveton, 3177.
A reminder to all members that there is now a $2 p/night board fee.

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

40 players have entered this years club championship with top seed being
Domagoj Dragicevic, ahead of reigning club champion of the past two years,
Malcolm Pyke. Third seed is Milenko Lojanica, he has won everything else at
some point but he has never won the club championship, always finding a way
to fall at the last hurdle. Zdravko Lojanica, Don Machell, Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic, Abdulwahab Rashid and Richard Voon will provide the top seeds
with plenty of competition, but Domagoj convincingly won the recent
Premier-Grade event against these same challengers and is the deserving
favorite.
The clubs Honour Board, which lists the club champions, will be setup at
the new venue in the near future.

There is also a Reserves Championship available, this is open to all
players rated 1550 and below, top seed for this being Mendel Armerman.

The first round went mostly according to ratings with the only upsets being
Mendel Armerman and Henning Rasmussen drawing with the higher rated Miralem
Campara and Graham Shaw respectively.
Not all the games were easy for the higher rated players though. Syf Pronk
gave Garry Lycett a tough time and was probably better for most of the
game, it was only a blunder which cost Syf the point. Don Maciulaitis put
up a good fight against Zdravko Lojanica in a long game but eventually
Zdravko prevailed.
Alan Gray played well to reach a drawn king and pawn ending against Michael
Potter, but these can be tricky. With two main choices of move Alan had to
decide, play the h-pawn to h5 or the g-pawn to g5. One drew and one lost
and Alan chose wrongly, but looking at it later he probably learned more
from the loss than he would have from the draw. Along with bishop and wrong
coloured rook pawn endings from a previous game Alan will file it away
under the "something I won't fall for again" category. I didn't see the
Ashley Mison vs Ramo Burzic game but Ramo complained later that it was
silly for Ashley to be unrated as he played very well and was difficult to
beat, so I'm guessing it must have been close.
Despite the rating difference Chris Potter always seems to play well
against Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, and last night was no exception. In a very
interesting game both players had attacking chances and both had very open
kings. With both players very short of time Mehmedalija finally wrapped it
up forcing Chris' king into a mating net.

Following are the results for Rd 1 and the pairings for Rd 2.
The second round pairings are provisional and may be adjusted, mainly
depending on confirmation of Tahir Lushaj playing the rest of the
tournament after forfeiting round one.

Hello everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

Round 2 of the club championship proved tough for the top seeds who would
have expected an easier time this early in a swiss.
Top seed Domagoj Dragicevic overcame Pranas Silas in an interesting game,
but 2nd and 3rd seeds Malcolm Pyke and Milenko Lojanica could only manage
draws against Bosko Mijatovic and Garry Lycett respectively. 4th seed
Zdravko Lojanica went further and lost his game to Mehmed Burak in a queen
and 4 pawns vs queen and 3 pawns ending.

Don Machell, Mehmedalija Dizdarevic and Abdulwahab Rashid restored some
pride for the higher rated players to join Domagoj and Mehmed as the only
five players with 2 / 2. They are followed by eight players on 1.5-points.

One of the best combinations last night was not played over the board, only
in the mind. Don Maciulaitis, (a blind player), spent about 15 minutes
thinking until he worked out a wonderful forced mate in twelve (!!). This
was very impressive, almost. Unfortunately for Don the very first move was
illegal, (bishops cannot jump over knights), and all that thought was
wasted. Surprisingly Don did have the correct position on his braille
board, he wouldn't normally make an error like that.

The Reserves Championship (U1551) is currently being led by Mendel Armerman
and Ahmet Yilmaz, both on 1.5-points, followed by many players on 1-point.
Following are the results for Rd 2 and the pairings for Rd 3.

Hello everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

After three rounds there are only two players still on full points.
Domagoj Dragicevic took most of the night to eventually wear down
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic.
Don Machell took about 15 minutes to win his game, I didn't see it but
Abdulwahab Rashid must have done something very wrong in the opening.
Both Domagoj and Don are now on 3 / 3 and will meet in round 4.

They are followed by three players; Milenko Lojanica, Richard Voon and
Mehmed Burak on 2.5-points.
Mehmed looked as though he would also get to 3-points when he went into an
ending against Malcolm Pyke that looked to be winning. With a bishop and
two connected passed pawns against a rook Mehmed just couldn't find a way
to win against very good defence from Malcolm.

There are a further 12 players on 2-points.

The Reserves Championship (Under 1551) still has no clear leader. Currently
ahead are Mendel Armerman, Don Maciulaitis, Ahmet Yilmaz, Daniel Potter &
George Tolpigin, all on 1.5-points, followed by 10 players on 1-point.

Following are the results for Rd 3 and the pairings for Rd 4.

Hello everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

The two equal leaders, Don Machell and Domagoj Dragicevic, faced each other
on top board in the fourth round. Instead of producing a clear leader the
resultant draw allowed Richard Voon to join them on 3.5 / 4, making three
equal leaders.
Richard managed a victory over Mehmed Burak in an interesting fight.

These three are only 1/2-point ahead of four players;
Milenko Lojanica who drew yet another game against brother Zdravko.
Malcolm Pyke who was just too good for Garry Lycett
Pranas Silas who defeated Michael Potter
Abdulwahab Rashid who recovered from the previous weeks disaster to defeat
Miralem Campara

There are a further 10 players still within 1-point of the top on
2.5-points

Hello, everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

Round six saw the leadership in the club championship change hands when
defending champion Malcolm Pyke defeated top seed Domagoj Dragicevic.
Malcolm now leads with 5 / 6 by 1/2-point from five players with a further
three players 1-point back on 4.
Had Domagoj won last nights game he would have had a stranglehold on the
first place trophy, but his loss means the final three rounds could be very
interesting. Malcolm will have tough opposition, and due to a few early
draws his tiebreak is lower than four of his closest challengers. So
another draw could cost him dearly.

Next week Malcolm plays Don Machell, who had a very tough game last night
against Ramo Burzic. Well, it was a tough first 9 moves, when the 10th won
a rook and queened a pawn Ramo resigned. This is the second game Don has
won in under 15 minutes, I imagine Malcolm will make him work a bit harder.
Apart from Domagoj the others on 4.5-points are Abdulwahab Rashid and
Milenko Lojanica who drew against each other last night, and Richard Voon
who inflicted a rare loss on Zdravko Lojanica.

The Reserves Championship (Under 1551) has three equal leaders; top seed
Mendel Armerman, Manny Chua & Chris Potter all on 3.5-points.
They are followed by six players on 3-points and a further three players on
2.5-points.

Following are the results for Rd 6 and the pairings for Rd 7.
** The following are provisional pairings and could change depending upon
whether Miralem Campara is able to continue in the tournament. If he isn't
the bottom six boards could change and there will no Bye.
Miralem is a previous club champion and recently had quite serious kidney
surgery, he has been unable to play the last two weeks.
All at the club wish him a speedy recovery and hope he is back soon.

Hello everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

The seventh round saw Malcolm Pyke take another step towards a third
straight club championship when he defeated Don Machell to retain a
1/2-point lead over his challengers. Malcolm is on 6 / 7 with only two
players, Abdulwahab Rashid and Richard Voon, on 5.5-points.
Neither of the three have played each other in this tournament, and the
winner is certain to be one of them as there is then a full point gap to
another seven players on 4.5-points.

The round was marred by no less than 4 forfeits, three of them notified the
DOP, (although too late for the pairings to be redone).
The most unusual was top seed Domagoj not appearing and handing Abdulwahab
a free ticket to equal second place and a matchup with Malcolm on top board
next week.

Richard Voon got to equal second with a very good win over Milenko
Lojanica. Richard looked in a bit of trouble but managed to get a rook on
the seventh causing damage and eventually converted a two pawn advantage to
victory. With this loss Milenko's chances of winning his first club
championship vanished and he then withdrew from the event. It is very
disappointing to see this, with a tie for first being decided on tiebreaks
then withdrawls and forfeits can play a big part in determining the winner,
which they shouldn't.

The two joint winners of the recent A-Grade tournament played each other,
Eddie Kocjancic vs Garry Lycett, and the result was the same as all their
previous encounters. An interesting game with chances on both sides that
finishes in a draw.

Zdravko Lojanica vs Mehmedalija Dizdarevic was also a good game ending in
a draw. Zdravko had two rooks vs Mehmedalija's queen and extra pawn. It was
the last game to finish, eventually going into an ending with a pawn each,
both queened pawns on the same move.

The Reserves Championship (Under 1551) finally has an outright leader,
Manny Chua, who went to 4.5-points after his win over Ramo Burzic. Manny
had a clearly won ending but then blundered two pawns to end up with a
clearly drawn rook and pawn ending, which he then managed to win after Ramo
returned the favour. He is followed by four players, Mendel Armerman, Ahmet
Yilmaz, Pezhman Ghayoori and Bahri Senturk all on 4-points. Chris Potter is
a point behind on 3.5-points. (* Mirko Kudric or Rhys Hopkins could also
be in the running in the Reserves depending on the result of their
postponed game).

With Manny playing Domagoj Dragicevic next round and the others all with
tough games the Reserves is still wide open and may come down to the luck
of the draw. (It is to be hoped Domagoj turns up next week and Manny
doesn't win the Reserves with a forfeit.)

Following are the results for Rd 7 and the pairings for Rd 8.
** There is one postponed game to be played this Saturday.
The Rd 8 pairings are given for each of the three possible results.
I will forward the final pairings on Monday.

Hello everyone,

Here is the next email circular about this event from Garry Lycett:

A reminder to all members that the Wednesday following the club
championship is the clubs breakup and trophy presentation night.
Food is provided and copies of the club calendar for next year will be
available. All members are encouraged to attend.
Next Wednesday, 5th December, is the final round of the championship and
12th December is the presentation night.

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

The winners of the past four club championships, Richard Voon 2003-2004
and Malcolm Pyke 2005-2006 will meet on top board in the final round to
determine which of them will claim a third club championship.
Both players won their games last night, (Malcolm against Abdulwahab Rashid
and Richard against Mehmedalija Dizdarevic), to setup the last round
showdown. With an impressive 7 / 8 Malcolm leads the tournament by
1/2-point from Richard and so has the advantage of a draw giving him
tournament victory. With Richard needing to force a win and having the
white pieces it should be an exciting game to watch.

After Richard there is a 1-point gap to the players in equal third place on
5.5-points. The four of them, Domagoj Dragicevic, Abdulwahab Rashid, Don
Machell and Eddie Kocjancic, will be hoping for Malcolm to beat Richard and
give them a chance of equal second place if they can win their individual
games. Of this quartet the big surprise to some people would be Eddie's
performance. I have been saying for a while that he has improved markedly
this year and it is only a matter of time before his rating catches up with
his ability. Of the others, Domagoj reversed last weeks loss on forfeit
with a win on forfeit this week. Abdulwahab missed his chance of tournament
victory by going down to Malcolm, and Don eventually won a long game
against Garry Lycett.

There are a further three players on 5-points, Zdravko Lojanica, Tahir
Lushaj and Sadedin Redzepagic who is having a very good tournament.

The Reserves Championship (Under 1551) now has two equal leaders after
Manny Chua had to forfeit his game against Domagoj Dragicevic. He was
joined by Rhys Hopkins on 4.5-points after Rhys won a tight encounter
against the higer rated Mehmed Burak.
Next week Manny plays Bosko Mijatovic and Rhys plays Garry Lycett. A win by
either of them would ensure at least equal first.
On 4-points and waiting to pounce are no less than 6 players; Mendel
Armerman, Ahmet Yilmaz, Pezhman Ghayoori, Bahri Senturk, Ashley Mison and
Victor Lane.
With Bahri playing Mendel and Pezhman playing Ahmet next week it is likely
that a few of them will finish on 5-points, meaning Manny and Rhys will
need at least a draw. It also means the players on 3.5-points would need
some fortunate results to be able to snatch an equal first place.
Although it is possible that results could see an amazing 10 players tie
for first on 4.5-points. An unlikely scenario.

Following are the results for Rd 8 and the pairings for Rd 9.
** There were no drawn games in round eight !!

Regards: Garry Lycett

Dandenong Club Championship 2007

Congratulations to Malcolm Pyke who won his third Dandenong Club
Championship in a row.
Malcolm becomes only the second player to win three in a row. But it will
be a challenge to emulate the last person to do it, Don Maciulaitis, who
went on to win seven straight between 1976 - 1982. Malcolm's third win also
puts him behind only Don Maciulaitis and Don Machell in total number of
club championships, they have eight each.
Malcolm sealed tournament victory with a last round win over his only
remaining rival for first, Richard Voon.
Richard needed to win the game and with White faced Malcolm's French
Defence. Possibly trying too hard to make something out of nothing Richard
lost the exchange and was always in trouble after that.
Malcolm finished with a convincing 8 / 9, conceding draws to Bosko
Mijatovic and Mehmed Burak but beating all the other top seeds in what was
a dominating display to fully deserve his championship. At one stage he was
1-point behind top seed Domagoj Dragicevic so to finish 1.5-points clear of
the field was remarkable. He finished with six straight wins and no doubt
the turning point was round six where he defeated Domagoj to take outright
lead, never relenquishing it. It turned out to be a turning point for
Domagoj too, leading outright after round five he had a disappointing 1 / 4
finish to be 2.5-points adrift at the end.

Richard's loss put him in a tie for second with Abdulwahab Rashid and Eddie
Kocjancic on 6.5-points.
Richard and Abdulwahab were consistent throughout, (excludings Abdulwahab's
oversight against Don Machell in round three), and were expected to be
amongst the top placed. They each lost two games, both to Malcolm and
Richard also lost to Domagoj. But possibly the most outstanding result of
the tournament, (Malcolm excluded), came from Eddie. Ranked 15th he lost
only one game, everybody else apart from Malcolm lost at least two. He
played seven of his nine games against higher rated players scoring 3 wins,
3 draws and 1 loss. This tournament finished too late to be included in the
December ratings, but this result will certainly see Eddie's rating jump in
the March 2008 ratings.

Alone in fifth place on 6-points was Don Machell, followed by a group of
six players finishing on 5.5-points.

The Reserves Championship (Under 1551) went into the last round with two
equal leaders, Manny Chua and Rhys Hopkins on 4.5-points, ahead of enough
players on 4-points and 3.5-points to cause a possible 10-way tie.

Manny looked to be in a drawn rook and pawn ending against Bosko Mijatovic,
but was outplayed and lost in the end. Rhys had his chances hampered by
arriving 45 minutes late for his game against Garry Lycett. He launched a
kingside attack straight out of the opening and his position looked pretty
good. But as it got down to what was an interesting major pieces ending his
time started running down and he made a few "second best" moves that were
costly. In the end Garry was able to win a pawn and get it to the seventh
rank. Rhys had two choices, take the pawn and lose or not take the pawn and
lose. He took the pawn and lost.
With the two leaders going down it was up to those 1/2-point behind to win
their own games. Ahmet Yilmaz managed to defeat Pezhman Ghayoori early to
go to 5-points, he then watched the remaining games with interest. As first
Rhys and then Manny lost he knew he had at least equal first, when Victor
Lane drew and Ashley Mison lost it all came down to Bahri Senturk vs Mendel
Armerman. In the last game to finish Bahri refused numerous draw offers
despite being a pawn down, (rook bishop and two pawns vs rook bishop and
three pawns), in what was a clearly drawn ending. Most spectators were
wondering when Bahri would accept the inevitable, and amazingly it looked
as though a possible 10-way tie would conclude with just one outright
winner. But Bahri proved the sceptics wrong when he outmaneouvered Mendel
and facing difficulties Mendel blundered a piece and lost.
So in the end it was two players, Ahmet Yilmaz and Bahri Senturk, who won
their last round games to get to 5-points and a tie for first.
Congratulations to both players on the result.

Following are the results for Rd 9 and the final standings.

Hello everyone,

I was planning to post the FIDE rating calculations for this event as done by Swiss Perfect, but then realised that it was counting players rated below 2000 FIDE as not existing.

I'll post them anyway, but does anyone know a way to reset the values in Swiss Perfect to include these players in the calculations?

I think I have an answer.

Go to tournament options in your swiss perfect tournament.

Then click Local rating tab.

In the bottom right hand corner there is a threshold window and it says lower threshold. Does the figure say 2000?

Malcolm,

Go to (Menus)->Options->Tournament then click on the Rating (Intl) button. Change lower threshold to something very low (like 0), and change K factor between 10, 15, 25 as appropriate for the player. The rating change might then be a reasonable estimate for FIDE ratings.

Can you send me the SP files please.

Regards,
Greg
