I see no reason why Domagoi can not win!

I think Domagoi and Jesse are the future of MCC!

Well, it will be a very tough tournament, but I am confident I can do well...

It's been a while since I've played 3 times a week, so we'll see how I go with that.. Well, actually this week is 4 times..

And thanks for well wishes, heavyknight...

Well I know two players called Jesse who are strong chessplayers. Which one do you have in mind.

Best wishes for the tournament. I am recovering from a nasty cold which scuppered my plans to go skiing in New Zealand late in August. Maybe I will go late September which rules out the Melbourne tournament.

Still if my weight keeps dropping and my gym work has an effect then I am very tempted to ski my way up the South Island club fields late September and then play the South Island Chess tournament in sunny Nelson.

A few years ago I was planning to ski mount Hutt for a week and the play The South Island Chess tournament at Ashburton.

Hi David and get well soon!

I think Michael is talking about young Jesse Jager, who, in my opinion, has all the qualities of a great Chess career as well as producing excellent performances in his academic field.

Undoubtly, Domagoj is a fine young player who enjoys his chess, although, as he has confined to me, sometimes he feels a little lazy to study the game thoroughly. Regardless, his tournament record shows that when in form he can do great things. Also, Domagoj along with his friends is doing an excellent job of work as a top administrator of the Noble Park Chess Club which in my opinion will hold a major key-role in the future of the Victorian Chess. Domagoj's name as a Chess player as well as a Chess administrator can be connected to no other club except Noble Park Chess Club. Another addition to the safe future of this Club is the popular young star, Dusan Stojic!
As for the Melbourne Chess Club's existing talent please keep in mind Jean - Luc Tambasco. Great personality, great sense of humour, top student and a brilliant chessplayer. In my opinion, however, the real future of Victorian Chess is safely developing under real Chess Club conditions and environs at the Box Hill Chess Club and Canterbury Juniors Chess Club. Chris, Denis, Eugene, Derec, Sally - just to name a few - and all the other members of the CJCC and BHCC contingent are amongst my favourite players!

One young player, however, who also combines all the traits of a future champion, is FM James Morris. I predict that James will one day win the Australian Championship and will be one of our next generation of GMs.

Cheers and good luck!

PS, I hope the MCC Open will be another successful story for the Club and I wish good luck to all who will enter. Sadly and against my wishes, however, I once again will not be able to play due to the early time (19:00) start. Maybe, some other time!

....which may in turn explain why I have time for some stories.

Well firstly a good field of players turned up to play, with the welcome return of Domagoj Dragicevic, Bill Reid, Carl Gorka, Mariusz Pecak, Bosko Mijatovic, Garry Lycett, Thai Ly and Felix Wyss. It is also the first weeknight tournament at MCC for Efrain Tionko, and I hope he enjoys himself.

Well as near as possible some sort of story on each of the games.

Board 1 between Jim Papadinis and Bill Jordan turned into some sort of Torre-esque thing after starting with 1.d4 g6 2.Nf3 Bg7 3.Bg5. Jim soon agreed to swap his dark square bishop for the Nf6. I am unsure but wondered if Jim had some possibility around that move of Nh4x(-)g6 forking Bill's Queen and Rook, but guess Bill had something in mind. In any case, via some messy manoeuvring which saw Bill castle long, Jim shed a pawn and then the exchange and the game was shortly over.

On board two the game between Jesse Jager and Rad Chmiel was an incredibly messy one. It was a Sicilian early …Qb6 line and after an early pawn charge on the kingside Jess was able to drive home the Nf6 to g8, such that at that stage all of Rad’s kingside pieces were back at home. I thought that even though Rad had rapidly advanced his play on the queenside that the absence of pieces able to support the action was such that it looked very good for Jesse. Later after the advance …e6-e5, Jesse was out of squares he liked for the attacked Bd4, so he chose to ignore that and instead renew his already substantial attack against Rad’s now unable to castle king ( it had recaptured on f7 after gxf7+) by bringing his queen to the attack in a more meaningful way and soon won. Later analysis between the two players revealed many minefields in the complex position.

My Board three game was hampered by my opponent being unwilling to play, and does not necessarily mean that Roger Beattie is not in the tournament, just some simple misunderstandings.

Board four between Domagoj Dragicevic and Paul Kovacevic was a Vienna opening where Domagoj achieved a very early f4, to which Paul played ….exf4 which led to a position like a King’s Gambit accepted, and quite a good one for white. Domagoj got castled quickly, and then had a set of doubled pawns on c2 and c4 after an exchange of his Bc4 by Paul’s Nc6 which went out to a5 to get the bishop, but also had near complete development and really strong central control.

These pawns were eventually undoubled and Domagoj set up quite a bind in the centre and also kept a very useful knight against a less useful bishop. These minor pieces were also exchanged at some point, and the queens too. What I was not prepared for was to discover that at the same time Domagoj had lost about 2 or 3 pawns!! There was always the possibility of recovering some of them, maybe even all, but hard to see. After one rook left the board, Paul unfortunately missed a forced win in the following position ( and others also according to Domagoj )

7k/pp5p/8/3Rp3/3pP2p/1P6/r5P1/6K1 b - - 0 1

After playing. 1...h3 2.gxh3 Rb2 3.Rxe5 d3 4.Rd5 d2 5.Kf1 Rxb3 [instead of this, the move 5...Rb1+!!! wins in all variations, as after 6.Ke2 d1Q+ 7.Rxd1 Rxd1 8.Kxd1 Kg7 9.Kd2 Kf6 10.Kd3 Ke5 there is nothing that white can do to prevent lines such as 11.h4 h5 12.b4 a6 13.Ke3 b6 14.Kd3 a5 15.bxa5 bxa5 16.Ke3 a4 17.Kd3 a3 18.Kc2 Kxe4 19.Kb3 Kf3 20.Kxa3 Kg3 21.Kb3 Kxh4 and wins] 6.Rxd2 a5 7.e5 the game ended in a draw, shortly afterwards, though it is probably still winning for Paul at this point.

Board 5 between Carl Gorka and Bill Reid was a London system where the queen’s left the board early, relatively, and a queenless middlegame ensued, with Bill having a lot of things for Carl to look out for, which he eventually did successfully by winning a queenside pawn in a double minor piece ending. This sounds like a fairly straightforward story, but the reality is that Bill played very well and he stopped Carl developing his Queenside for many moves.

Board 6 was a 9.b4 Classical King’s Indian with 9…Ne8 as the answer. The game was an interesting one, and there were more than good chances for Alex Kaplan at the end, either perpetual or chances of an incredibly hair raising attack featuring a queen and two knights around Mariusz’s king, even though costing an exchange. This was probably winning and Alex started to play the line and got mixed up on move order and unfortunately ended up a whole rook down. The game ended shortly thereafter in Mariusz favour.

On board 7, Pano Skiotis and Efrain Tionko started quickly and the game was on hold for quite a long time, maybe as much as 40 minutes whilst Pano decided what to do about the threat of losing a pawn.

Here is the pause position, and the moves shortly thereafter.

r1bqk2r/pp1pppbp/5np1/1N6/2BpP3/5Q2/PPPP1PPP/R1B1K2R b KQkq - 0 1

1…0-0 2.Nxd4 Qc7 3.Bb3 Qe5 4.c3 Qxe4+ 5.Qxe4 Nxe4 6.Ne2 Nc5 7.Bc2 d5 8.d4 Ne4 9.f3 Nd6 10.Nf4 e6 11.Nd3 or something like that. Eventually after exchanges the game wound down to a draw.

Board 8 was a Queen’s Gambit-ish looking position where Dean Hogg had an isolated d4 pawn against Nikola Ivanov. At some point, Dean managed to win two pieces for a rook via a capture of some piece on e8, which decoyed Nikola’s queen from defending a knight on b6. The two pieces proved too strong in the end, and Nikola was checkmated.

Board 9 between Jusuf Omeragic and Richard Voon was initially an irregular closed Sicilian but quickly became a more conventional Classical open Sicilian. After about 20 moves or so, Richard had managed to win a pawn, which he then carefully nursed home to victory some moves later, with his pair of bishops being of great use in this process.

Board 10 was a closed Sicilian between Thai Ly and Jake Kostrzewa where most of the minor pieces were exchanged and only a queen, two rooks and a knight remained, and the White king fell prey to a perpetual check which saw them split the point. To avoid the perpetual check required Thai to jettison a pawn, or maybe more and it was unclear if he would have anything real for the pawns.

Board 11 saw Robert Brooking set up a stonewall type position as white and also succeed in moving his Bc1 out to h4 to exchange it against Bosko Mijatovic. I did not see what happened after that exactly as the next time that I walked into the room, Robert had resigned and they were signing the scoresheets.

Board 12 was one of the last games to finish for the night. Tom Kalisch had played a Wing Gambit in the Sicilian which his opponent Sarah Anton declined. The game then see sawed for a while and eventually Sarah found a clever tactic which won a pawn and also exchanged the queens. Tom described his next few moves as being more than a little odd as he was soon 3 pawns down for not very much. Sarah spends a great deal of time on her moves always, and in her time trouble made a mistake which allowed Tom to force through a pawn to promote costing her the game.

Board 13 between Brendan Podbury started out as some sort of Indian defence, but soon transposed to a sort of Maroczy Bind after an exchange of pawns on d4. Unfortunately Brendan chose to exchange knights on c6, which lead to Richard regaining control of d5, and he also soon had a lot of pressure on the white pawns, which became a little over extended. Brendan also seemed to get into incredible time trouble which probably didn’t help either. Richard ended up winning though what exactly brought that about I did not see. It may very well have simply been Brendan running out of time.

On Board 14, Garry Lycett was white against Andrew Louis. This is Andrew’s second tournament at the club, and maybe over all, and he soon was in an awkward position after Garry seriously hindered his development. It was a bit like a Queen’s gambit, but Andrew’s Bc8 had managed to exchange itself at some point on f3, doubling Garry’s pawns there after gxf3. Eventually Garry expanded in the centre which cost Andrew a piece, and fairly much ended the game.

So a delayed story but hopefully worth the wait,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

one has to feel sorry for judd niemann here who most likely turned up for the draw only to get the bye then had to look as board 3 produced a forfeit for whatever reason

not sure what sort of "games" were being played by macavity's opponent but situations like this provide a persuasive reason for me not to participate in such an event given the considerable distance and expense involved

Hi eclectic,

One does not have to feel sorry for Judd Niemann for not getting a game, but perhaps we would feel sorry for him as he was at home with a perforated ear drum and asked for a postponement as did all of those players on boards 15, 16 and 17 for various reasons.

As for my game, it will be resolved

and I am sorry that you feel this way about events at MCC, and hope that your opinion changes at some times, as you are always welcome at the club, as you know.

hi macavity,

are you strictly permitted to do this?

if you assign the september list ratings for him then why can't other players ask for the same to apply to them?

actually i wonder why you can't reverse apply september ratings to round 1 and see how much difference it really makes to the pairings?

however my feeling is that the june list has to apply for pairing purposes ... bill would know

when it gets rated will the june or the september list apply?

maybe this event should be programmed each year to start after september 1 so it doesn't straddle two rating periods

cheers

one has to feel sorry for judd niemann here who most likely turned up for the draw only to get the bye then had to look as board 3 produced a forfeit for whatever reason

not sure what sort of "games" were being played by macavity's opponent but situations like this provide a persuasive reason for me not to participate in such an event given the considerable distance and expense involved

Ah - its ok - Fortunately for me, I logged in here first and saw the bye, so I didn't Turn up :D

Its true I haven't had many games lately, but I put that down to unfortunate circumstances rather than any defect with the way the tournament has been conducted.

I am looking forward to some more games, though. Cheers,

Hi Domagoj,
When you are playing with Pano?

Well, Pano has been and still is in Tasmania since Tuesday, and he won't get back till Monday.. So we haven't actually arranged a time yet, we will probably do it Monday.. I will be pushing for Tuesday or Thursday, preferably Tuesday...

Hello everyone,

Here are the rating Group winners; I was not quite sure of the cut offs for the groups but now have the details of the winners

In Rating Group A: 1st Bosko Mijatovic 5.5/9, =2nd Richard McCart, Garry Lycett, Jim Papadinis, Rad Chmiel 5/9

In Rating Group B: =1st Paul Kovacevic and Efrain Tionko 5/9

In Rating Group C: 1st Brendan Podbury 4/9, and 2nd Andrew Louis 3.5/9

Well done to all the prize winners, and well done to John Davenport on a mainly dispute free tournament.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity
