Hello, Dean, and other interested parties:

This is close to correct

Bd 1, Sandler [3.5] 1/2-1/2 West [4]

This was a Leningrad Dutch, with Leonid playing 8.b3, and the exchange of white d pawn for Black e pawn happened at some point. The position simplified quickly and was soon agreed drawn.

Bd2, Hamilton [3.5] 1-0 D.Stojic [3.5]

A wild modern Benoni, in the Taimanov attack ( 7.f4, 8. Bb5+), Doug sacrificed a pawn for positional gains via playing e4-e5 and then after ...dxe5, playing f4-f5 and retaining a good grip on e4, which square Doug used to ferry his knights towards the Black king, and seemed to have a dangerous attack going when I left something like

r2qr1k1/p4pb1/1p3np1/2pPpbN1/P1B4Q/2N5/1P4PP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1

Where Doug played, g2-g4, and this seemed to be a good idea to me.

Bd 3,Sales [3] ?? Pecak [3] ( maybe 3.5?)

Some sort of Slav type Gueen's Gambit, which looked messy and won't comment, didn't look enough.

Bd 4 Wallis[3] ?? Hacche[3]
The position was quite level. Opening was a Hippopotamus.

Bd 5 Jager [3] 1/2-1/2 S. Stojic [3] Jager recovered from a dropped pawn to have a good position, then missed a win apparently. Opening was a 2...Nf6 Sicilian.

Bd 6 Savige [3] ?? Bobby Cheng[3] hard to assess, some thought Cheng, and some thought Savige, The opening was a Sveshnikov Sicilian
( Bobby recently arrived from Auckland, 1800 NZCF, age 10 )

Bd 7 Morris[3] 0-1 Pyke [2.5] No comment

Bd 8 Antolis[2.5] 1-0 Tionko [2.5] Tionko played a 2...a6 Sicilian, and although he effortlessly achieved ...d7-d5, he also lost his e5 pawn after

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 a6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Bd3 e5 6. Ne2 d5 7. exd5 Qxd5 8. O-O Bc5 9. Nec3 Qc6 10. Qe2 O-O 11. Qxe5 Re8 12. Qg3

That is all I can remember for now, so will try and see what else I can find out,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Hi Mischa,

Yes was just so over tired and was thinking of the song Doctor Worm by They Might Be Giants, and was generally bemoaning the fact of losing to Jesse Sales to myself, and the 15-20 minutes I had for lunch, then I reminded myself that I was there to play chess, and I liked playing chess, and I immediately cheered up, hard to explain at times. From what you have said that would make the final results look like this:

Bd 1. IM L.Sandler [3.5] 1/2-1/2 IM G.West [4]
Bd 2. FM D.Hamilton[3.5] 1-0 D.Stojic [3.5]
Bd 3. FM J.Sales [3] 1-0 M.Pecak [3?]
Bd 4. C.Wallis [3] 0-1 D.Hacche [3]
Bd 5. J. Jager [3] 1/2-1/2 S. Stojic [3]
Bd 6. C. Savige [3] ?-? Bobby Cheng[3]
Bd 7. FM J.Morris [3] 0-1 M.Pyke [2.5]
Bd 8. C.Antolis [2.5] 1-0 E.Tionko [2.5]

and standings like this:

4.5 - IM G.West, FM D.Hamilton
4- IM L.Sandler, FM J.Sales, D.Hacche and either or neither, C.Savige and Bobby Cheng
3.5 - D.Stojic, J Jager, S. Stojic, C. Antolis, M. Pyke
3- FM J. Morris and others

Anyway was up since 6.30 to get to Mass, so that is all for today,

Take c are and God Bless, Macavity

Hi macavity. Hope you had a good sleep last night after your long day. :)

I know I said I wouldn't post for 2 months (as Howard has already pointed out ;)) but I just have to correct one thing. Final standings of top 5 players were:
4.5 - IM G.West, FM D.Hamilton
4- IM L.Sandler, D.Hacche, M. Pecak

Hi all,
Just for confirmation:
Jessie Sales - Mariusz Pecak 0-1

Jessie sacrifised bishop for two pawns but he could not manage to win.

Hopefully "Best in the West" will be another strong tournament.
