The Brisbane Chess Club meets every Thursday at 67 Ipswich Road, The Gabba (yup, just around the corner from the Cricket Ground).

We don't have a web-site. We'll let you know when that changes.

President: Pat Byrom
VP: Howard Duggan
Senior member type bloke: Garvin Gray ('arbiting' and keys to the place!)

Our 2007 season kicked off tonight with Round 1 of a 6 round Summer Swiss. I'll do my best to keep up to date with calendar news and results. Perhaps Garvin might pitch in too - he's good at this sort of stuff ;)

Boilovers on boards #3 and #5 ... what happened there?

Boilovers on boards #3 and #5 ... what happened there?Regina is (AFAIK) under the tutelage of Jacob Edwards, and quite underrated. I played her a few months ago and she had the upper hand for the opening and early middlegame.

Not sure 'bout t'other.

Difficult to know where to put this horror. This'll do ;) It is suggested that the board is turned for maximum effect.

Full credit to Daniel who played very well and had the ability to make threats instead of curl up like a ball. His second win on the back of beating Vince Barwinski (1704) in round 1.

My heart bleeds for you Howard ... a rather depressing result after you got into such a good position in the game. However we must be strict here, and I have decided on your punishment! I hereby sentence you to 2 weeks study of the games of Tigran Petrosian, because you did not extinguish all possibility of counterplay before launching your attack. ;)

Did you lean over and plant a big sloppy kiss on Ross's cheek ??

I thought you had sufficient compensation for the exchange when I left but I did not expect you to win.

Could you please post the game ?

How did you win !!

Time. The last 10 moves were done with 1 minute on the clock - both sides. Ross' flag fell.

It was a good game, sent HIARCS 10 into overdrive on 30 secs analysis per move. Really needs at least a minute a move or more. HIARCS has me at -2.5 after the exchange, and +4 only a few moves later. Jacob Edwards tells me it was complicated and he couldn't assess it in passing. Critical errors (of course) from both sides. A draw would have been a fair result in the end. Needless to say I was most pleased with my play. Ross was a gentleman. There's much in this game that is relevant to other threads concerning draw offers and time pressure.

It is not unusual for a computer to say this after an exchange sac. The engines usually need to be prodded for a few moves to get a more realistic evaluation.

Engines love swallowing material and then defending for a while and keeping the extra material.

[QUOTE=Howard Duggan]Jacob Edwards tells me it was complicated and he couldn't assess it in passing. [QUOTE]

Yes it looked interesting. I was only looking in passing too but I was expecting white to play c5 just before taking the exchange instead of exchanging pawns on d5.

I also wondered if you would have been better taking the knight on c3 instead of taking the sickly looking bishop on d2. Taking the knight would have got you out of some the cheapo's white was threatening when he moved his rook opposite your queen on the c-file.

Anyway, look forward to having a closer look when you post the game.

Cheers George.

Thanks Garvin. V. informative.

Congrats to Jacob Edwards (picket fence) & Yi (aged 9). Both played well and both absolute gentlemen.

And here's one for the gossip column: Jacob married Regina Grenfell on Saturday. Wishing them many happy years together with my very best wishes. A very lovely couple indeed!

I made him up to inflate our tournament and make it look successful :)

He is from South Africa and is out here for a couple of months for study.

I could not find a fide rating for him, but he says that he has a rating of about 1950 in South Africa. Not sure how that translates to our rating but Pat thinks that it is roughly accurate from watching him play.

ok thanks Garvin - I was curious. I went to school with a Brett Williams but he was more like 900 not 1900.

Cheers

No! I was +2 coming out of a tactical Tromp opening (great fun!).

Dead level through the middle game (so says the computer although Jacob had the pressure - but white had the bishop pair!).

Endgame came down to bishops of opposite colours and pawns) black 2x q-side passed which decided), while again we both surfed the increment.

It was a good game, which both sides could have won - and indeed some might say white should have. Shoulda woulda coulda hooda buddha bah humbug! ;)

Be2 Kc5 0-1I don't think this is quite right, but probably close enough to what happened. I don't think white has any hope of holding the ending especially since both his pawns will be forced to light-squares and his bishop will be overworked. I think earlier on move 23 you were too eager to exchange rooks. Perhaps 23.b3 to give your bishop room to evade the knight.

Hi Howie, go to column under A and you ll find different colours, use first one on top (left), also your spacing may need some adjustment.
Or, for the comfort of your readers, include ref. View, Text Size, choose Largest

For whatever technical support matters, don't hesitate to call! :)

Cheers and good luck

Funny! The draw displays perfectly for me. Are you saying you would like it bigger or that it displays as a dog's breakfast for you?

At first sight it shows like that with even smaller fonts. Then, it improves into the dog's breakie standards, and then after you increase the font size it goes normal. But then again it might be my three dimensional editing screen! :)
Cheers and good luck

Aware of this ;).

Originally he was placed in the draw as the 1081 player since the 1081 player is from Qld (no birthdate provided for the Qld player). Through investigations from Pat Byrom and Gail Young, recent evidence suggests that he is in fact the 1403 player from WA.

Hence his information was changed between round 5 and 6 to reflect the new facts. As it turned out, Phil would have received the same pairing in round six with either rating. Of course his pairings would have been different in the previous rounds.

Pat's thoughts are that possibly the two Phil Young's are the same person.

Pat spoke to Phil about this matter last Thursday and I believe that Phil answered that he has played in both Qld and WA during the same period as when the rating results were achieved.

It is slightly odd though that Phil never pointed out the discrepancy during the competition.

Pat's thoughts are that possibly the two Phil Young's are the same person.I would seriously doubt that.

The QLD Phillip Young has not played a rated game since sometime prior to 1984.

The WA Phil Young was added to the master file in June 2003 and has only played in two rated events. One was the 2003 Gufeld Cup held in WA and the other was the 2003 Queensland Reserve Championship.

Bill, is your doubt based on the length of time between activity?

Bill, is your doubt based on the length of time between activity? Not really.

The guy says he played in WA and QLD during the same period, but this was in 2003 and clearly therefore not related to the other Phil who had last played sometime prior to 1984.

He would need to convince me that he had played chess in QLD prior to 1984 for me to believe they were one and the same.

I see where you're going and you're likely correct, but the 'same guy' scenario is still possible - what the recent invention of the roller skates 'n all!

Also if they were the same then it means when he played prior to 1984 he was under 17.

I wil try and get a more definitive picture from Phil Young this or the next Thursday. Of course we may never see him at the club again and then the mystery will continue.

Is that the same Stephen C Swift who was Tasmanian Champion 1974 and 1978?

I don't know. This Stephen Swift looks about the right age. Perhaps 50 now? Mid height. Slim to medium build. Full head of hair - probably blond mouse in its day. Pleasant demeanour. Quiet'ish.

IIRC he told me he was originally from Tassie.

I've never met him; he was before my time, but it's nice to keep track of how many of our ex state champs are still playing chess elsewhere.

He was my predecessor as DOP of the Logan Chess Club. He took time out to write some maths text books which are now used in many highschools here.

Next tournament (2007 BCC Lasker Memorial- starts 7th June and is held over 4 Thursdays (4 rounds total).

Tournament will be played in two divisions. The divisions will be decided on the first night.

The time control is: 40 moves in 60 minutes, followed by 15 minutes plus 30 seconds from move ONE till end of game

Explanation:

1) Each player receives 60 minutes at the start of the game. For each move, 30 seconds will be added. Making 80 minutes in total for the first 40 moves.

2) Each player must make 40 moves in that 80 minutes.

3) If both players have made 40 moves, then another 15 minutes (plus 30 second increment) is added to the clock. Play continues till the end of the game with both players receiving the 30 second increment.

4) If a player fails to make 40 moves inside of 80 minutes, they lose.

5) Time not used by a player in the first period is added to the second period. Example- Player A has made 40 moves in 60 minutes. This means the player will have 35 minutes + 30 second increment for the rest of the game.

6) Players must record from move one till end of game.

Why is it that Cameron De Vere who played in the first round of the BCC Autumn Swiss does not appear in the SP files.

Why is it that Cameron De Vere who played in the first round of the BCC Autumn Swiss does not appear in the SP files.

Either 1) It was written in white ink
Or 2) He is isn't a CAQ member and was inadvertently left in on the idea he was going to become a member
Or 3) How about I shut up and let him answer - he's online (or Garvinator for that matter)

Sheez, what a waste of a post. Nothing new s'pose.

Please contact Pat Byrom. That is going to be my only answer on this matter, especially on an open forum.

Please contact Pat Byrom. That is going to be my only answer on this matter, especially on an open forum.I have.

It appears to me that the tournament organiser/arbiter should have ensured that those players paid the necessary CAQ fees prior to allowing them to participate in the event.

As it stands it means players who are still in the submitted files through no fault of their own are denied having their games rated against the players that have been removed.

Hi Cameron

I thought about sending a PM, but on reflection this is as good a test case as any, where the identities involved aren't the issue - especially when we all know each other. Might as well have the goings on on the record.
NB Pointies - zip it in advance! :) And don't get bent out of shape.

Here's the sitch ...

I believe you would have approached to the BCC some time earlier this year and after some discussion with our man Byrom, I'm guessing you would have asked/ agreed to play in a tournament.

I'm also guessing that Pat B would have made the 'rules of engagement clear' as I've seen him do every time we meet new prospective players. One of those rules would have been that to play in (your first) this tournament, you must join the CAQ, and the fees that would be payable. I assume you agreed in good faith, but didn't necessarily have the requisite cash with you at the time. And on a handshake and a promise away you went in the tournament.

All good so far...

Having had an ad hoc chat with you on here a few weeks ago, I learned that your work schedules prevented you from continuing to visit the BCC at least in the short term, and so you had to withdraw for that and subsequent tournaments.

Here's the prob ...

I'm 100% genuine when I say that I reckon you owe an honour debt of CAQ fees. It's not a cash grab. It's what's fair.
Fair to you - your honour and your handshake etc..
Fair to Pat - who didn't demand COD and leave you scrambling for an ATM
Fair to the players you played
Fair to the state body which makes it all possible
Fair to Bill and Garvin who now have to push this penny around and make it all fit if you don't do as suggested.

End of guessing and so forth. I appreciate there's a whole of guessing and suggesting above, and I hope my post is construed as nothing more than a starting point for dialogue between all the parties.

Everybody else carry on.

This has been you ex-president speaking. I hope you've all enjoyed the trip down memory lane and for those who haven't yet been touched by the man in action, I hoped you enjoyed. Feel free to puke ... wait for it wait for it ...

OK, puke now.

Hi Cameron, just seen your dialogue with Bill in the shout box. There is definitely no danger of your good name being jeopardised. That's the beauty of a good reputation. We'll work it out for sure. Could well have been an admin or a communication balls up. My guess is that no-one is hugely to blame in a malicious way - just a shame for Billy Bob to have to clean up. I will be apologising on the club's behalf to the appropriate people once we all know what's gone on.

Paid club yearly fees when first visiting club.

Paid night and tournament fees at first round.

Asked for a receipt, told they dont give out receipts.

I'll give Pat the benefit that he made an innocent error and forgot that I'd paid, it ends up being my word against his,So its pointless going on

I've always paid my weekend tournament fees in advance through money-order, I'm a big believer in paying money before its due.

Moral - Demand receipts when paying by cash.

Basil

Thanks for the reply Cameron. I have no reason to doubt you one jot, and I don't.

Knowing Pat as well as I do, there is absolutely zero room for doubt as to his honour - I stake both nuts, my wife and my reputation on it.

What we are left with is an innocent mistake that will be cleared up quick smart. After I have spoken with Pat and sorted this little distraction out, we can resume normal programming - in fact I hope we already have. Once I am satisfied an apology is due to you, you will receive it unequivocally from me.

As far as the receipt is concerned, I don't have a good answer for that and I thank you for raising the matter. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever received a receipt from any tournament I've ever played in. We do keep books and all receipts are recorded therein. I will look at them myself and refer back to you. You of course, are entitled to see the books as well. They are at the club every Thursday.

Finally, as for your moral, I can't argue against it as a general principle, but I don't think it will be applicable here under the circumstances.

Also on the About page:

There is often time left over for social lightening games afterwards.

Should be lightning.

In the calendar section- Ligtning- should be lightning. Just call it Blitz Championship :)

In the rounds column- Blitz Championship should say round robin, instead of 1 as currently mentioned.

Dates of Club Championship should be: Oct 4- Nov 15. Currently states Nov 8 finish.

Hi all

It's interesting (and surprising) to note that a meeting will take place at Brisbane chess club next week at 8pm regarding the policy for ensuring players taking part in rated games are CAQ members. I believe this is so more tournaments and games can be rated without any hassles.

Apparently the current policy runs along the lines that anyone can play in any number of rated tournaments per year, and their results will be replaced with a bye before ratings are submitted for people who have not paid the proper fees. The new proposed policy is that players can only play in one tournament before being compelled to pay CAQ fees. I am sure someone will correct me if the above is incorrect.

I would personally prefer to see everyone enforced at all times to pay the proper fees to play in rated tournaments. I think it is bullshit to allow someone to play a rated tournament without paying the fees. If you want to have some non-rated tournaments per year then go ahead (and advertise the fact) but don't shaft your members.

This has impacted me personally. Last year when I joined I was told club tournaments were rated. I was also under the impression I was paying for the privelige. In a tournament last year I played my guts out to beat a player (Mike Corner) who was rated about 400 points above me. I noticed that I gained a few less points than expected on the next rating list and that Mike Corner's glicko indicator still looked old but I put it down to either my insufficient knowledge on these matters, or a ratings officers honest mistake.

At no point did I think I was getting screwed over by my own club !!

As to this meeting next week, I don't think the proposed changes go far enough. If members are told and are under the understanding that tournaments are going ot be rated than for goodness sake rate them.

The proposed changes do seem to be a step in the right direction. I would therefore like to cast a proxy vote in favour of this motion seeing as I am a member, and immediately following the meeting resign my membership of Brisbane chess club.

I will immediately rejoin when the tournaments I have played so far have been correctly rated. I can't stand getting ****ed around.

If my understanding of the facts are incorrect then would somebody please correct me.

Regards
George.

Hello George,

Welcome to the club ;)

Ok seriously now :)

It has been Pat Byrom's policy since 2003 (caq membership structure changed in 2003) that players
could play in BCC tournaments without being a caq member (I hope I have that written correctly, so I am not being unfair to Pat's position in this matter).

To get games rated in qld tournaments, a player must be a member of caq or other state/territory association.

Hence, since 2003, if a person played in a BCC tournament and was not a member of caq, their games would not be rated.

Pat has the view that receiving the night fees each week from a non caq member is more important
than ensuring that each person gets a rated game.

Howard and I are in the other camp. I cant speak for Howard (I am sure when he reads this he will
reply ;) so no need to attempt to paraphrase him.)

My view is that all games should be sent in for rating. Players specifically pay for rated games
(the $10 entry fee, which covers rating fees and a bit extra).

This says to me that the players want ALL their games rated. If it unfortunately so happens that a player refuses to become a member of caq, this will mean they cant participate beyond their first up tournament.

In the past, normally whats happens is that a new player will turn up for one comp, they have either joined the caq or not returned. Pat has not pushed them in either direction, they have just made this decision on their own.

After a recent kerfuffle where a player was accused of something he didn't do (not payment of
tournament fees, which he had fully paid) and another player not being a caq member and playing in repeated competitions, so depriving another player of a rated game each week, we are now at the SGM because it has been decided that the members of BCC should decide the issue as it cant be agreed between the committee about what is more important between the extra income of one or more non caq members or providing rated games each week.

I am on the side that guaranteeing that a player gets a rated game each week is more important. I
believe that guaranteeing a rated competition game each week is what sets BCC apart from the other clubs in the distant area.

As you also point out, the 'dropping' of non caq members from the rated game file sent to the acf
rating officers is done after the tournament and in 'secret' from the players in the tournament.

This also seems wrong to me, but as it had been Pat's policy since 2003 and he is President, I left
it alone as people respect his decisions. I had thought it was actually happening with at least most
regular players knowledge. It wasnt until I got dragged into the kerfuffle recently, that I became aware of more issues with this practice.

I attempted at last year's BCC AGM to have one set entry fee for a whole tournament. This covered night fees, rating fees and other ancillary costs. It was defeated.

I agree with you George. If players won't cough up the fee to play in a rated tournament, then they don't get to play.

Hello George,

I see you are a member of BCC, will you be at the meeting so you can vote and voice your opinion?

Basil

I believe this is so more tournaments and games can be rated without any hassles.
No, the primary reason is the premise that BCC members can expect to have ALL their games rated. There is the counter position (which Garvin has reasonably stated, although he himself doesn't hold it) that consideration must be given to the development of gross membership of the club.

However, it is as GG has stated, a no-brainer for us. You play at BCC. You pay your CAQ fees. You do the right thing by yourself. You do the right thing by your state association. You do the right thing by your fellow club members.

I hold a personal position (beyond that of VP of the club which goes to my CAQ P days) where I have little time for flops who wish to play in organised chess (which requires infrastructure) but seek to avoid the paltry $20 p.a. for the privilege.

This has impacted me personally. Last year when I joined I was told club tournaments were rated. I was also under the impression I was paying for the privelige. In a tournament last year I played my guts out to beat a player (Mike Corner) who was rated about 400 points above me.
Great case in point.

You haven't said what extra changes you would like to see.

I would therefore like to cast a proxy vote in favour of this motion seeing as I am a member...
You won't be at the meeting?

I will immediately rejoin when the tournaments I have played so far have been correctly rated.
There is nought to be done about the games you have played against non-financial CAQ members. It's not a lack of will, but a lack of mechanical capacity. We'll be a long time without you. So please let's discuss this over a coldie - perhaps at a Roar FC game ;)

I do give consideration to the development of the gross membership of the club. I believe that the most likely way the gross membership will be increased is by guaranteeing that players will get acf rated games each week that they turn up. As I said previously, it is what defines BCC as different from the other clubs in the distant area.

Small point- there is a difference between gross membership, which I assume you mean BCC membership, and gross numbers in BCC tournaments. If I have this incorrect, please do correct :)

I confess to not having read Garvin's post fully prior to a recent e-mail exchange between Pat, Garvin and myself. I had concentrated more on George's post and skimmed Garvin's because I had had fairly deep discussions with him on the matter.

On a second and closer reading of Garvin's post, I have some comments. I feel Garvin's post gives the impression that Pat is running some secret agenda at the BCC, and the general tenor of the post is not as balanced on the issue as I had imagined.

Before I comment further I should place on record that Pat has an impeccable record in Queensland chess, both as to his integrity and to his contribution to chess in Queensland. Pat has been involved in chess administration for the best part of 20 years, both here in Brisbane and regionally. He is also presently the CAQ's ratings officer.

He has been the stalwart behind the BCC forever! holding it together while others with their floppy and or extreme ideas come and go, having done their fair share of damage along the way.

Garvin, I feel you have done Pat, your colleague and a man of very fine standing, a gross injustice with the weighting, or more specifically, the wording of your assessment.
1. Pat's doing something he is more than entitled to do.
2. The policy is no big secret as you have suggested. It may have been unknown to some players, but it was known to others. You yourself knew.
3. I think Pat (and I) would accept that it could have been publicised better. But 'secret' is not on.

That said, I wholeheartedly share your opinions regarding the change. I really appreciate where George is coming from, and as I originally said, his case is an excellent reason why the process should be rescinded.

Garvin, I feel you have done Pat, your colleague and a man of very fine standing, a gross injustice with the weighting, or more specifically, the wording of your assessment. Sorry Howard, but I stand by everything I have said both on here and in the email exchange recently.

1. Pat's doing something he is more than entitled to do. I don't agree with this.

2. The policy is no big secret as you have suggested. It may have been unknown to some players, but it was known to others. You yourself knew. My knowledge does not make it general knowledge. I only condoned the changing of the rating files because I thought that a lot of the players in BCC tournaments knew that non caq members would be removed after the tournament had been finished.

I have since found out that this is not the case at all and I now question if anyone other than a couple of players in the tournaments (yourself, myself) were aware that this was going on and has been done for years.

3. I think Pat (and I) would accept that it could have been publicised better. But 'secret' is not on.I stand by my comments. It has been secretive.

I know you would just have loved me to roll over and offer an apology and retract my comments. Since this issue has come into the public light and because of recent private emails, I stand by everything I have said both on here and in the recent emails.

The previous practices would not have even been revealed and would have just been swept under the carpet had I not commented on how we got here.

Basil
22-07-2007, 10:55 AM
I won't respond any further here, save the one thing that warrants an immediate challenge; your addition of 'sweeping under the carpet'. That's more than enough.

On your way out the door, just clarify for me who is doing the sweeping? Thanks.

Bill Gletsos

As you also point out, the 'dropping' of non caq members from the rated game file sent to the acf
rating officers is done after the tournament and in 'secret' from the players in the tournament.FWIW I only became aware of this practice on 1st June this year.

Hi Howard

Thanks for the reply to my post. I am only just replying now as I don't have an internet connection at home and wanted to clarify a small point yesterday.

I think the proposed motion is a move in the right direction. I would support it without any internal reservations whatsoever if Brisbane Club was going to pick up the tab (i.e. pay the money) for players who are playing their one exempt tournament at the club to ensure all games (theirs and everybody elses) are rated.

I don't fundamentally believe in a half-rated tournament. It's a bit like pregnancy - you either are or you aren't.

Regards
George Lester

For anyones interest the proposed motion was carried at the meeting last night with a score of 4-1 (may have been 5-1, I forgot to use my fingers).

The meeting was followed by an impromptu 7 player round robin lightning tournament which was duly won by Pat Byrom with a perfect score. Pat and I played in the last round (both on 5/5) and he won with an obscure, tricky, almost-impossible-to-see, subtle, brilliant, Fischesque, one move mating threat.

DOH !

Cheers
George.

Thanks Cameron. Would you be good enough to grant us an extension? As a result of this issue being raised, a number of other issues has cropped up. To address them, Pat and I have decided on an appropriate course of action - the first being a letter to the CAQ.

I don't propose to give a blow by blow here, although members are more than welcome to enquire at the club. Once the process is complete, I'd be more than happy to report back here, in full.

Well, at 7:29pm last Thursday, it could have been me. By 10pm, after much grunting and consternation, I'd managed to get all my pieces out ... and then back in again

With barely an exchange or a pawn capture, my Scandinavian had been firmly put back in its box with just about everything back on its original square

As long as the pieces were the only things to come out after all the grunting and consternation Howie.

Bad luck - better luck nexttime.

For those interested parties, at the BCC AGM I offered to do some lectures and also run some group activities for those that wanted another option to simply playing tournament chess every week. The intention was that players had an opportunity to play and improve without necessarily being beaten up on a regular basis and to the point of not enjoying the game. In addition I also thought that it would be beneficial to have more interaction between the 'experienced'and 'inexperienced' players through some form of voluntary 'mentoring'. I indicated that I would come up with an alternate proposal during the break and discuss with the group on the first night back. I have attached a copy of my proposed changes/additions and am open to feedback from interested parties. This is something that is for the benefit of the club members and if there is limited interest and people are happy with the existing calendar and structure I have no issue with that either.

Hi Cameron

Great to see some fresh ideas in your document.

I love the idea of a small 'Grand Prix' at Brisbane. Is five bucks extra in membership enough to cover the prizes though ?

Lectures sound like an interesting idea as well.

Be interesting to see what the feedback is relating to the later starts. An 8pm start to games on a Thursday night would not suit some, especially with the 90/10 and 90/30 time controls.

Anyway - keep up the great work. I'm planning to play some more at clubs around Brisbane when I get my license back after late May.

See you around.

Cheers
George.

Hi George

With regard to starting times the plan was that only nights that have lectures would have games starting at 8.00pm and these were scheduled for tournaments that had shorter time controls. I agree that 7.30 is a better start-time for the longer tournaments. The idea of moving the start time was primarily based on the fact that having done these lectures previously I know that a 7.00pm lecture start time is almost impossible for me to meet. The issue I guess then becomes one whereby you have different starting times for tournaments through-out the year but I am confident that could be managed with suitable announcements. WRT to membership increases, I will leave that to Thursday and discussions with Pat Byrom. I appreciate increase does not fully cover prize funds but is linked to a discussion that occurred at the AGM last year.

Round 5 (http://www.scenemagazine.com.au/bcc/) pairings for the Summer Swiss (under 'Current Tournament').

34 player field, including the biggest "here, let me grab my ankles and allow you to take as many ratings points as you wish" of my miserable and unremarkable chess career to date - a loss to a player 500 points downstream from me. Yeah, cry me a river.

John Scott is a most agreeable gent whose only known failing is that of being a Manchester United fan.

Why Jacob is playing? Are you looking for some psycho evaluation for his motives?

He was listed as a bye in round one so all good!

I meant he is playing me in round 2 (from BCC website). I was looking for some pointers and having a whinge about table pairings. ha

My rudimentary understanding is:

You are the top rated player from the bottom half of players on 1/2 point*. Jacob is the top rated player from top half of the field on 1/2 a point.

* Actually you are top but one, I think colour preference might have something to do with it, but you'll need a Garvin or a Bill for this (or perhaps a thread which goes for 5 years).

Or the simple answer is that Brendan is not being serious with his complaints and is just having a whine because he is black against Jacob :p to which my response is: would you like some cheese with that?

Another possible response is that Jacob and Regina are very rarely paired to play each other :uhoh: due to being husband and wife.

After all this, Brendan did not even get close to playing Jacob due to numerous extra players entering for round 2.

I couldn't believe it. When I walked over to see what opening Jacob was playing (against a guy I beat at Tin Cup) it was the Smith-Morra!! I had just finished book-bashing the crap out of that because I knew he would play it. Ah well, another time perhaps. And thanks for your watchful eyes at the end of my game last night Garvin - your black magic didn't work this time... :0

I tried ;) btw, Please only make claims about move recording on your own time after stopping the clocks. Especially if you are going to do it at the board while your opponents time is running.

We established a friendly atmosphere way earlier in the game as we both realise this isn't the World Championship. He asked me stuff earlier and I had no problem - I even went to Pat on my own time to clear up something. With this established and 8 minutes on the clock I thought I could ask the friendly Michael. Besides, the main reason I did was because he stopped recording for a few moves and I was checking to see if he still. I actually asked it in such a way that it looked like I was asking a normal question (which is what you saw) when in fact I was telling him to keep recording the moves - as I had been doing a few minutes earlier (till 5 min mark).

Michael Van Pelt paid tribute to her and she will be missed by all that knew her well.

Jessica created a web-site with the confronting title of 'Dying For Beginners' (http://www.dyingforbeginners.com/). I know she wanted it to perpetuate after her passing. If you have experiences of people dying at a young age or know of someone who might benefit or could give benefit to the forum AND OR her blog, please pass the site's address on.

The forum's link is on the left hand side of nav panel of the blog linked to, above.

The ABC is almost ready to broadcast a story on her while a story appeared in the most recent issue of 'That's Life'.

That's a real shame. She played in one Logan champs a few years ago, and must have just started chemo. I thought she might have beaten the rotten cancer, but apparently not.
