Maybe his notes will be recovered from his estate, to reveal that the Russians did pressure him into losing to Smyslov .

Wasn't Bronstein a Russian too? And did he allegedly lose to Smyslov under pressure or to Botvinnik?
Cheers and good luck:)

He was Russian..but he was Jewish by nationality. The official establishement always supported "native russians" like Smyslov or Karpov

... but Michael, Botvinnik was Russian Jewish too. After all many great grandmasters in the USSR as in other parts of the world were Jewish; and dare I say that without the influence of great Jewish players and theoriticians at least after 1850 Chess would have been much poorer!
cheers and good luck! :)

He was born in Ukraine. In those days one could be a Soviet without necessarily being a Russian, although the two terms were often mixed up in the West.

From "Chess in the Fast Lane" by Bill and Michael Adams (1996):

"When I [Michael Adams] was younger I read about David Bronstein and his various world championship tussles without ever really expecting to play him. Therefore I was quite pleased when I got an opportunity in this game [No. 2]. Ironically these days David is a regular visitor to English tournaments and you probably have more chance of playing him here than you do in Russia."

He also played some tournaments in Denmark. He was so friendly. Some times the arbiters had to take him away from spectators and "force" him back to the board(!)

I got his autograph in one his books but was stupid enough to sell way to cheap shortly after...

Do you mean Jewish by ethnicity?
