I have been using Freechess.org for blitz for about a year and for the last week it has been unavailable. Does anyone know why??

Seems ok to me. I've not played blitz, but there's certainly blitz games in the 'sought' list...

Assuming you mean FICS..

I seem to have more of a problem then johnleigh. Every time I try to go to freechess.org I get: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.freechess.org. I also tried it in Internet Explorer. Same problem.

Sometimes firewalls block port 5000, and you have to use port 23 instead. Give it a try..

Hmm, Zwichenzug raises an interesting question... are you using a java interface, or a dedicated client, eg Babaschess?

I use a dedicated client (Babaschess (http://www.babaschess.net)), hence if you are using a java/browser based client, I can't really comment.

I think Zwichenzug point was that the website www.freechess.org appears to be down.

I think Zwichenzug point was that the website www.freechess.org appears to be down and not that any particular interface wasnt working.

I have been using Freechess.org for blitz

Sorry - I took this phraseology to mean the discussion was re the Freechess.org server (i.e. FICS itself).

Interesting: FICS hasn't automailed any of my games from tonight.

Server works fine for me, connecting with Thief. The website is down though.

Hey Eurotrash, you want a game on FICS now? Or anyone else?

It's actually a news item:

1189 (Thu, Oct 19) IMPORTANT: FICS experiencing hardware problems!

FICS is currently experiencing hardware problems, which have blocked our Web
\ page, the registration system and our email system. This also means that
\ we are unable to issue new passwords. However, if you have password
\ problems connecting with Jin (the main Web interface), it is probably not
\ due to a forgotten password, so please download, install and connect with
\ another GUI (Graphical User Interface). Possible options are WinBoard,
\ available as a self-installing .EXE from
\ http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/winboard/winboard-4_2_7a.exe, BabasChess, available
\ from http://www.babaschess.net/ and Thief, available from
\ http://www.thief-interface.com/

Is there any indication on when such problems will be resolved? I would like to register on FICS but the site is down.

Thank you for your reply. How are you accessing Freechess.org. I get a message Firefox " cannot establish a connection to Freechess.org" and this is still the case 10 days later

Sorry Belty, I went to bed shortly after posting. I wouldn't have been much chop anyway, I was that drunk I was routinely hanging my queen

Hi John,

The best way to access FICS is by using a downloadable interface. If you use windows, babaschess is pretty good (http://www.babaschess.net/). All you need to do is download it, install it and connect. A downloaded interface is usually much better and faster than a java interface like Jin (this is what you use when you connect via the website).

All of these interfaces work through a telnet protocol. You can telnet directly to the freechess server by typing "telnet freechess.org" at a command prompt (or Start->run->"telnet freechess.org". This will connect you to the server where you can do all the usual things (e.g read news and talk to admins), but it's not very useful for playing chess unless you like looking at an ASCII chess board.
