Hi. I am a patzer looking for as much comments and feedback as possible. Here is a string of games I played online (playchess.com) with 15 min time control. I tried to play more tactically and aggressive in these games and they turned out well for me. Any comments are most welcome.

Lots of people post games played online at fast limits seeking feedback on their play. My feedback is: if you want more useful feedback, play at slower time limits and then post the games! I even sometimes get people asking me for coaching help on the basis of a 3-minute or even one-minute game, which is just silly.

In the first game you missed 5.Bxb7 winning the exchange immediately. You need to see stuff like this always, at any time limit. After playing the same unnecessary h3 that gave you trouble in another game you soon got into trouble again and would have lost except that Black played the timid 23...Bh5 instead of winning with 23...Bxc3 followed by ...Nxe4 winning a pawn with attack. After that you won not because you attacked but because Black blundered his queen to an obvious trick (but at least you saw it).

Game two is a comedy of errors. Your opponent was better after winning the exchange because you ignored a pin threat, but then gave it back by allowing a pawn onto f6. But even then while you won, you made it hard for yourself. If you must keep putting a pawn on h3 in every game then at least ensure it stays protected! So on move 23, take on e4 with the queen. Then on move 29 why not take Black's h-pawn? To improve you need to see these one-move threats at any time control. However you did play the endgame after that well, and especially made good use of your king to clean up pawns. Many players fail to use their king well in endings.

In the third game your opponent played a clearly premature f5 and you dealt with it well for several moves although 12.h4 is weakening and unnecessary. After Black's howler 14...fxe4?? you have a totally won game. However after 16...Qa5 you missed forced mate by 17.Ne7+ Kh8 18.Qf7 etc. You finally saw Ne7+ on move 21 but missed Qf7 next move, which again mates quickly. There was a lot of drifting after that, although at least you were never worse, and a strong Black would have wriggled off the hook. Although Black walked into a mate eventually, it could have been a different story had he played 39...Ra7 40.Nd5 Rxb7 41.Rxb7 Nxd5 leaving you with heaps of work to do to win (if it is even won at all).

Next time you play this system, try gluing your h-pawn to the board unless there is a very strong reason to move it!

Firstly, thanks for your analysis Kevin, its very much appreciated. My basic plans on chess improvement is studying tactics and endgames.

You are right, I was too busy trying trying to create my usual setup to notice any blunders in the opening.

You are right, I should protect h3 better, maybe with Kh2. Its just with black's move gxe4, I like the idea of Bxe4 and attacking black's h-pawn (setting up a future attack possibly with Qh5). This recapture with the bishop of course leaves my h-pawn hanging. Just a pedantic point about terms - a "sac" where you get more material back than you invested is a combination not a sacrifice. A true sacrifice is when you don't recover the material by force but have compensation for it that might lead to a gain of material down the track.


The main reason for my usual h3 is to prevent the really annoying Bg4 (e.g. Game 2 where my knight was pinned to my Queen and black followed through by attacking my pinned knight with his knight.) or Ng4.

When you have played a fianchetto system in most cases the Bg4 pin will be harmless because you should have a bishop on g2 defending your Nf3 and therefore be in a position to move your queen offline. In game 2 you could have avoided the problem you got into by moving your queen to c2 on move 12. Ng4 tends to be harmless too unless the h-file is open and a rook or queen can attack down it. Even then with a N on f3 they need three attackers to capture on h2.

Many players make early useless a or h pawn moves out of fear of an opposing piece landing on their N4 squares. While there are exceptions to any rule, in most positions the cure is worse than the disease. If you keep an eye out for cases where the opponent can pin you and think about whether those pins really matter, in most cases you won't need to play such moves.

With some opponents I deliberately put my bishop there just to see if it provokes them into moving their h-pawn. Then if it does I retreat my bishop and hammer that weakness for the rest of the game.
