The above position is totally won for Black and I was rather tired so at this point I wasn't exactly inspired towards tactical greatness but was just shuffling pieces about and waiting for my opponent to resign.

What I played: 35...h6 (and White resigned next move).

What I should have played: 35...Rg2! with no defence at all against the threat of ...Rg1+! forcing Rxg1 and then ...Nf2#. Oh, how obvious is it.

But it is still a win, Kevin.

Yes, I know these things. It doesn't matter how you win, they're all worth a point. :D This is one I would have liked to have seen, especially as I have never delivered smothered mate in a rated game (this is not technically a smother, but it's close).

Fair enough, I've delivered a smothered mate once, and it felt good. Until a very strong player, who was just passing by, pointed out that I could have done it two moves earlier.

One of my opponents missed smothered mate once. (Alas, he won a rook instead. Winning or drawing after an opponent missed a smother would be an amusing swindle for my collection.)

There is still the spite-move 36. Ra2 ;)

repeating: my 10 year old student did a smother mate on her second outing against a snobby male school team, was I proud and did the girls' team put poop on the male team who did not hang around for arvo tea but went away mad.

There is, but I'm not sure White can then prevent reconstruction of the same mating pattern after Black takes the rook. Maybe there's a way.

More spiteful (;)) would be 36.Nh6+. If the knight's not taken it'll come back to g4. If it is taken then ...Rg1+ isn't an immediate threat so there's time for a few more spite moves. :)
