I got a new opening idea. It has become "trendy" to play 3...a6 for black in Slav defence. Why not try the same in Caro-Cann.

1.e4 c6 2.D4 d5 3.Nc3 a6!? :hmm:
So long live Baron Variation :owned:

If you champion the move 12.h4 from this game you could start the Baron Von Munchhausen variation:lol:

hey 3...a6 is not that bad..:hmm: I have given it a try in some allegro and blitz games.

I still stick to 3..a6 in my internet blitz games....the more i play..the more i like it..black appears to obtain reasonable positions in all of the lines. I guess we now need to test the line in tournament chess.

Pity i am not a very active player these days.Would be nice if others also gave this opening a try:hmm:

Hi Michael, there are some games played by Grandmasters in this variation. Jon Speelman, John van der Wiel and Emir Dizdarevic have all played 3...a6. And in a rather mad blitz game Gm's Macieja and Gustafsson produced the following opening:

1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.d4 a6 4.f3 e6 5.Be3 b5 6.Qd2 Nd7 7.Bd3 Nb6 8.Nge2 Nf6 9.0-0 Be7 10.e5 Nfd7 11.f4 g6 12.a4 Nc4 13.Bxc4 bxc4 14.Rab1 h5 15.b3 cxb3 16.Rxb3 a5 17.Rfb1 Ba6 18.Nc1 Bc4 19.Rb7 Ba6 20.R7b3 0-0 21.Nd3 Qc7 22.Nc5 Nxc5 23.dxc5 Rfb8 24.Qf2 Rxb3 25.Rxb3 Bc4 26.Rb6 Bd8 27.Qe1 Qc8 28.Qb1 Ba6 29.Rb2 Bc7 30.Kf2 Qd8 31.g3 d4 32.Ne4 dxe3+ 33.Kxe3 Kg7 34.Nd6 Rb8 35.Rb3 Rxb3+ 36.cxb3 Qb8 37.Qc2 Kf8 38.Qc3 Qb4 39.Qxb4 axb4 40.Kd4 Ke7 41.Ne4 Be2 42.h4 Kd7 43.Ng5 Ke8 44.Ne4 Bd8 45.Nd6+ Ke7 46.Ne4 Kd7 47.Ke3 Bd1 48.Nd2 f6 49.Kd4 fxe5+ 50.Kxe5 Ke7 51.Kd4 Kd7 52.Kc4 Ba5 53.Kd4 Bc2 54.Kc4 Bf5 55.Kd4 Bg4 56.Nc4 Bc7 57.Nd2 Be2 58.Ne4 Bd8 59.Ke5 Bd3 60.Nd2 Be7 61.Kd4 Ba6 62.Ne4 Bf1 63.Ke5 Bd3 64.Nd2 Bc2 65.Kd4 Bf6+ 66.Kc4 e5 67.Nf3 exf4 68.gxf4 Bc3 69.Ne5+ Kc7 70.Nxg6 Bxg6 71.a5 Kb7 72.f5 Bxf5 73.a6+ Kxa6 -

Thx, Carl

I have seen the Speelman and Dizdarevic games, but not the blitz one ( I guess Chessbase does not store blitz games) you are right ,its a bit crazy. On the other hand. blitz is blitz :)
