Australian U10 Champion: ??????

The name Laurence Matheson is ringing a bell from seeing the u10 rapid/blitz playoff. I believe he won it playing white in the 6/5 blitz final game.

Looks like NSW dominated the competition in more areas than any other state. Has SA, WA or ACT had a Champion in the Open or U18 Juniors?

Slobodan Krstic scored more then Viner and is over 60 and played for Australia in the world seniors team championship.
So why isn't Krstic the Australian Seniors Champion?

I have corrected the post.

Chessbase Mega2006 also has both of them however they have the one from Serbia and Montenegro playing in the 2001 Australian Seniors as well as the the 70 and 72 Olympiads. As such it would appear they have them allocated to the wrong Krstic.

ACT usually doesn't even get to field a player in the Championships. You have to remember we are a town of 300,000 people - maybe 1/15 the size of NSW. We were pretty happy with 3 titles in the Aus Juniors thi year (same as NSW), albeit in the girls area. Andrew Brown was probably a bit unlucky not to pick up the Under 14 Open title as well.

Laura Moylan came second in the Aus Juniors in Hervey Bay in 1999 and Gareth came pretty close to winning this year - if he had managed to hold his game against Angela I think he would have had a good chance. ACT will have to hope that Michael Wei or Junta Ikeda will be able to pull it off over the next couple of years.

I think Gareth was the first ACT player to win an open junior title (Under 10 in Adelaide in 1998) and others have done it since (Khoi Hoang, Yi Yuan) and we have had a number of under 12 champions (Gareth, Peter Jovanovic, Dusan Stojic). Also some under 14 (Junta Ikeda and Shervin Rafizadeh) and Under 16 titles (Michael Wei).

We seem to do well in the Girls area and the younger age groups, but possibly lack the strength at home to push our players to the next level. We are trying to change that and given it is less then 10 years since we won our first open title, I think we are making good progress.

Incidentally the winner of the minor is now viewed as Victorian, but I think teh ACT is justified in claiming Andrew Fitzpatrick as one of ours!

I notice the final bulletin makes the following statement:

Justin Huang finished second, and Moulthun Ly, Gareth Oliver and Junta Ikeda finished in a tie for third to fifth. Junta won the under 16s, and Edwin Wu won the under 14s after a play-off with Andrew Brown.
The relevant bylaw with regards the Junior Championships states:

A player shall only be awarded one title and any associated trophy from each tournament, that being the highest title he/she is eligible for, on the understanding that first in an older age group is higher than first in a younger age group.
Justin Huang is also U16. Isnt first in the U16's considered higher than 2nd in the U18's and therefore shouldnt Justin have been the U16 Champion.

In fact this certainly appears to be the case in the U18 Girls where Sally Yu is the U16 Champion as opposed to being declared 2nd in the U18's.

The actual titles that were awarded were

U18 Angela Song
U16 Justin Huang
U14 Edwin Wu

On countback Moulthun took the medal for second U18 and Gareth the medal for third U18.

The organisers were a little confused with titles, but were very keen to get it right and both myself and Charles Zworestine were involved in checking that the trophies that were handed out were correct.

We didn't check the bulletin though.....
