Its hard not to have fun- firstly, its chess ;) Secondly, I was with school friends and it was so well organised and friendly, I dont see how you couldnt have enjoyed it.

And as you said, "if it's no longer fun, walk away" why would someone play for years and not enjoy it? (when saying that, I mean many of the players there I believe have played for years from their strength). Better to be bad at something and enjoy it than be great at something and hate it the rest of your life, just because you win comps at it.

I think there is a special type of legless dragon called a Wyvern or something.

Actually, it looks like the Wyvern normally has two legs and wings. Apparently there are several variations on the basic dragon in both Eastern and Western mythology. "Wyrms" being quite popular as a dragon without either wings or legs. (Sounds just like a big snake to me!) :D

Yeah, a wyrm by what you said sounds like a snake. Dragons are interesting just because there are so many variations created off of the same story.

No worries about you taking your time Careth, a lot of players have "wimped out" of posting their moves simply because the "pgn uploader" has been disabled. ;)

Now, having a serious look at the position, I am not entirely sure you have set up all the pieces properly.

Are you sure you wish to play this piece sacrifice?

I have just played through all the moves and I think that your last move is an egregious blunder, to which I can simply respond with 20.Qxd4+(check).

Would you please re-examine the position, and either confirm your 19th move (if that is what you want to play) or proffer a different 19th move?

I apologize if this is all just a very clever sacrifice, the nuances of which I cannot immediately envisage, but I wouldn't want you to spoil the game just because the pgn uploader wasn't working for you, and you had missed a move in setting up the position.

Cheers,

EE :)

What program does that to the letters?

ElevatorEscapee
10-01-2006, 10:28 PM
21.Bg4

Windows (among many others) does that to the letters, they are the ASCII alternate character set. You can acess them by holding down the ALT key, and typing a four figure number between 0000 and 0255 on the numeric keypad.

For instance:

Alt+0191 on the numeric keypad of a Windows computer produces: ¿ the "upside down" question mark. This, of course, is the Spanish question mark (written at the start of a question phrased in Spanish), which is used as the "nose" in my pretend smilie.

In my work, I often have to make use of the Euro currency character € (ALT+0128), the English Pound Stirling character £ (ALT+0163), and the character that doubles both as the Japanese Yen, and Chinese Yuan Renminbi currency symbol: ¥ (ALT+0165).

You will find that being ASCII, these will also work in many non-windows based programs.

I am sure you can easily find a "map" of these somewhere on the Internet, and how to type them, however I have personally found it much more fun to simply experiment to see what characters I might be able to display (and how they may be combined).

Cheers,

Èlé\/á†ô® €§©áÞêé ™²ºº³

*Shakes Careth's hand.

Thank you for the game.

I think I spent about half an hour last night going through all the variations after 22.Ngxe6, and came to a similar conclusion... (the Knight sac is the reason I played Bg4 after moving it from e2 to f3 only a couple of moves earlier).

eg: 22... Nxg4 23.Nxd8 Qc7 (threatening the h2 pawn with Q & N), 24.Re8+ Kg7 25.Nge6+ fxe6 26.Nxe6+ (forking King and Queen)

or: 22... fxe6 23.Bxe6+ Kg7 24.Bxc8

or 22... Rxd4 23.Nxd4 Qxc5 24.Bxc8

However, if I had been Black, I would have played on for a few more moves to see if White could come up with the best moves.

eg: 22... Nxg4 23.Nxd8 Qxd8 24.Nxb7 Qc7! (hitting both the pawn on h2, and the knight on b7)... is interesting however either 24.Qf4 or even 25.Qf4 should both leave White the exchange and a pawn up.

I wish you well in our next encounter, (Round 2, colours reversed) . :-)

In any case, I think it was a much more interesting game than if I had just taken your knight after your first move 19... ;-)

Cheers,

EE :-)
