Bad Wörishofen 18.-26.3.2004

From the 18th to the 26th of March is one of ChessOrgs big European Tournaments. Bad Woerishofen is played in the Bundesland Bayern in Germany. Although myself more of a spectator than a strong competitor I will be taking part and looking forward to watching some strong GM's slug it out. Living and working here in Germany has given me some great chess tournament experience and memories. The interaction with the players is always a delight and for some unknown reason I always seem to be analysing games with GM's after thier games and the analysis usually turns to friendly games of blitz after a few beers. I am not only captivated by the ease at which these guy play beautiful chess in 5 minutes!!, but buy their willingness to explain thier methods of thought.

Guess im lucky that by my table is always a big 'AUS' and not a 'GER', 'LAT' 'RUS', or 'FRA' which seems to capture the attention of other players who are keen to find out why a 'kangaroo' is so far from home.
I think I have little trouble in interacting with the other players because of the fact that many of the Eastern Europeans speak little or no German, regardless of the fact that the spend most of their time playing and living in this part of the world. The English that they can speak is enough for them to want to converse after listening and not understanding the german for the rest of tournament.

So I though I would set up a page here and give some updates about the tournament, games played, players thoughts etc. Im not sure if anyones interested in whats going on over here, but ill post some notes anyway.

So far about 150 players are registered and the top 20 ranked players look like this...Im pretty sure that a few of the 'big guns' will hold back until just before the tournament, some probably even registering on the day.

With still over a month until the tournament begins their are already 200 part takers. I am not sure how players are possible to play in a single category event?! :eek:

I am really looking forward to this one and its good to see GM Ivanov has decided to head down to the little 'Ort' in Bayern as well.

Actually it is possible for a 9-round tournament with a million players to have a sole winner.

Yes. At least (by my calculations) 1,952 of the 4,500,000 games must be drawn. Not too much to ask is it, surely? :p

Bt of news direct from the tourni...

In a tight match in the second round between Korchnoi (yeah the runner up to the Chess Championship way back) and a strong young German player the old GM lost control at the table. After winning a pawn in the middle game Viktor found himself in an endgame with N and K against N and K + 1 pawn (the h pawn!). Anyway it was drawn but at the table he began... 'How dare you play on in the middle game a pawn down against me in a lost position' he declared. His young opponent was pretty proud but was not expecting such abuse from Korchnoi (who left the tournament room in disgust!?). Anyway he was there again today. I didn't see any appology for his behaviour. Pretty sad that he acts in so a way; this just lessens the repect we hold for him as a person.

Ill give you guys some results later tonight when all the games from the third round are over.

Anyway, the tournie is running along well and most of the points are going to the GM's as planned. Its easily the strongest tourney i've played in with the middle ELO rating of about 2100.
