You are an education student, aren't you, Bruce?

Not quite, degrees are in Psychology and Philosophy/Religion.

However, I do teach chess to primary school students.. so you're half correct :)

THE COLLEGE THEME PAPER: HE VS. SHE

Remember the book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"?
Well, here's a prime example offered by an English professor at an
American University.

"Today we will experiment with a new form of composition called the
tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the
person sitting to his or her immediate right. One of you will then
write the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the
first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The
first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and forth.

Remember to reread what has been written each time in order to keep the
story coherent. There is to be absolutely NO talking and anything you wish
to say must be written on the paper. The story is over when both agree a
conclusion has been reached."

The following was actually turned in by two of my English students:
Rebecca -last name deleted, and Gary - last name deleted.
-------------------------------------------------------------
STORY:

(first paragraph by Rebecca)

At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The
camomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now
reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he
liked camomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind
off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about
him too much her asthma started acting up again. So camomile was out of
the question.
------------------------------------------------------

(second paragraph by Gary)

Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron
now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about
than the neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie with
whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. "A.S. Harris to
Geostation 17," he said into his transgalactic communicator "Polar
orbit established. No sign of resistance so far..." But before he could
sign off, a bluish particle beam flashed out of nowhere and blasted a
hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent
him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

He bumped his head and died almost immediately but not before he felt
one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who
had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its
pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4.
"Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel,"
Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously
excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her
youth, when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no
newspapers to read, no television to distract her from her sense of
innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her. "Why must one
lose one's innocence to become a woman?" she pondered wistfully.
---------------------------------------------------------
(Gary)

Little did she know, but she had less than 10 seconds to live.
Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian mothership launched the
first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted wimpy peaceniks who
pushed the Unilateral Aerospace Disarmament Treaty through the congress
had left Earth a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were
determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage
of the treaty the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough
firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they
swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile
entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret Mobile
submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the
inconceivably massive explosion, which vaporized poor, stupid, Laurie and
85 million other Americans. The President slammed his fist on the conference
table. "We can't allow this! I'm going to veto that treaty! Let's blow 'em
out of the sky!"

----------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

This is absurd. I refuse to continue this mockery of literature. My
writing partner is a violent, chauvinistic semi-literate adolescent.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Gary)

Yeah? Well, you're a self-centered tedious neurotic whose attempts at
writing are the literary equivalent of Valium. "Oh shall I have
camomile tea? Or shall I have some other sort of F***ING TEA??? Oh no, I'm
an air headed bimbo who reads too many Danielle Steele novels."

----------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

Asshole.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Gary)

Bitch.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

Wanker.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Gary)

Slut.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

Get f****d.

----------------------------------------------------------

(Gary)

Eat s**t.

--------------------------------------------------------

(Rebecca)

F*** YOU - YOU NEANDERTHAL!!!

---------------------------------------------------------

(Gary)

Go drink some tea - whore.

I actually think it IS genuine, here is the clip with sound as well.

http://anon.salon.speedera.net/anon.salon/media/2004/10/BushUncensored.mov

From http://www.centristcoalition.com/blog/archives/001296.html:

“She’s still tellin’ me what to do,” said current-President Bush. He then gives the camera the finger, perhaps directed towards Karen Hughes. This video was most likely recorded in the 1990s, during which time Mr. Bush was governor of Texas. Salon.com posits the “she” that Mr. Bush is complaining about is Karen Hughes.

Karen Hughes was one of Bush's advisers.

This one doesn't qualify as a funny picture but it's certainly unusual.

My son was flying his hang glider at Stanwell Park and photographed his own shadow on a cloud surrounded by a circular rainbow. Those blemishes in the picture are actually objects on the ground viewed through the thin cloud.

http://chesschat.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=425&stc=1

(During the '80s I worked on the 42nd floor of the World Trade Centre in Sydney when, one day, one of the women noticed a circular rainbow outside. The building seemed to be right in the centre of it and it reached down to ground level. Had we been able to see the end of it it would have completed the circle right at the base of the building.
I don't know if anybody rushed down to look for the crock of gold...)

I'm not very familiar with the maths and physics of the whole rainbow phenomenon but I believe it has its origin in the defraction of light by water droplets suspended in the atmosphere. It seems to me all rainbows are circular just the more standard ones are very big circles and we only see a limited arc of that circle. This may be a function of the distance between the observer and the droplets causing the defraction.

In the hang-glider pictures above the defraction happening on light reflecting off the ocean or perhaps light relecting off other droplets. I any case the there is a noticible mist in close proximity to the observer and this may account for the relatively small radius of the rainbow which would fit with the hypothesis above.

If anyone has some more info on the physics and maths models I'd be interested in reading it.

also part of the reason we cannot see more of the rainbow is that it 'disappears' below the horizon. When a person is on top of a large mountain, they are able to see more of the rainbow than when on level ground.

Some years ago I wanted to write a piece about flying saucers and asked my wife to photograph one.

She hung a couple of buttons from the clothes line using grey cotton, and photographed them against grey clouds. Of course, they were out of focus but that's de rigeur for flying saucer photographs.

One of the buttons was of clear glass and had small raised bubbles which reflected light, so that it was possible to explain to people that the "ship's" lights were flashing as it took off.

It was surprising how many people, some of them well educated, believed it. Maybe we just need a little magic in our lives from time to time.

You are (almost) quite right Gareth. Italy actually has two presidents. The President of the Council of Ministers (Il Presidente del Consiglio (dei Ministri)). This is often referred to outside of Italy as the Prime Minister, and is Silvio Berlusconi (http://www.palazzochigi.it/Presidente/Biografia/biografiait.html). This position is the head of government. The other is the President of the Republic (Il Presidente della Repubblica). Currently this is Carlo Azeglio Ciampi (http://www.quirinale.it/presidente/ciampi.htm) and it is this position which is the head of state.

BTW I thought it looked like Phil the dill too.

Dozy

Prince Phillip?
The most memorable photograph of Phil the Greek I saw was published on page 1 of the Daily Telegraph in 1954.

It was during the first visit to Australia by a reigning British monarch and the Betty-and-Phil show drew huge crowds of spectators everywhere they went. The crowds may have been partly due to the novelty of visiting Royals, but we were more sycophantic in those days.

Phil was standing with regal dignity, his rolled cap held in his hands, and his hands clasped at arms length in front, as he received a society type who was curtsying to him.

Perhaps there was a bit of parallex involved, or maybe the naughty photographer did it on purpose, but the cap extended from PTG's fly to the woman's lips, which appeared to be just touching it's tip . . . er, end.

There's no way it wasn't published with malice-aforethought so I don't know who pulled the plug, but the unsold copies of the Telegraph were recalled that morning.

That pic of the "bombs-away" toilet seat reminds me of something Max Bygrave said. He pointed out that the toilet seat was invented in the 17th century by an Irishman. Until then we had to stand or squat.

It became very popular.

Three years later an Englishman cut the hole in it.

Two male mathematicians are in a café. The first one says to the second that the average person knows very little about basic mathematics. The second mathematician disagrees, and claims that most people can cope with a reasonable amount of maths. The first goes off to the toilets, and in his absence his companion calls over the waitress.

He tells her that in a few minutes, after his friend has returned, he will call her over and ask her a question. All she has to do is answer one third x cubed. She repeats, "One thir - dex cue"? He repeats, "One third x cubed". "One thir dex cubed?" Yes, that's right, he says. So she agrees, and goes off mumbling to herself, "One thir dex cubed..."

The first guy returns and the second proposes a bet to prove his point that most people do know something about basic maths. He says he will ask the blonde waitress an integral, and the first laughingly agrees. The second man calls over the waitress and asks, "What is the integral of x squared?".

As instructed, the waitress says "One third x cubed," and while walking away, turns back and adds over her shoulder, "Plus a constant."

Assuming you're using microsoft... open each file in MS paint (which is usually under "Accessories" in the program menu), click "save as" and select jpeg. The jpeg file will almost certainly be much smaller then the bmp file.

I like this one-you have to look at the background to work out what's happened

This Good Wife guide is 95% right. It would also be 95% right if the word "husband" was substitued for "wife. Both should submit to the other - it is called a loving marriage.

Sailor moon was/is ok but a bit too girly, even for me.

Does your lack of denial constitute tacit accord with Mischa's observation?

Baz,

As a scientist, you should understand that lack of denial does not necessarily equate to truth.

Indeed, I thought you might have taken on board the recent Bill Gletsos episode as a lesson in that regard, lol.

I do, but your comment seemed an almost resigned acceptance "sorry Mischa, are you jealous?" sounds a bit too much like "it's a fair cop". ;)

My daughter liked Sailor Moon but she is over it now
She feels that she is a bit too old for it
She is 7

I was just checking thru one of CNG's new on-line suburban papers (Mt Druitt Standard) and followed the links to their photo gallery. I put in chess as the search word and, guess who was there?
