I notice that the numbers have declined over the past few years.
In 2001 it was 107, 2002 113, in 2003 102, in 2004 100 and now 83.
In 2001 it was only run as an open.
In the following years it was run as an Open and a U1600 Division.
The numbers for the Open have been: in 2002 26, in 2003 31, in 2004 35 and now 25.
The numbers for the the U1600 have been: in 2002 87, in 2003 71, in 2004 65 and now 58.

Although there has been a decline in numbers since 2002 are there any theories what may have caused the decline this year.

Casey Bernard whoever he is, is in pretty good form. Was this comp going before the Gardiner Chess Centre?

dont know. I didnt ask when I was there this afternoon advertising for the qld championships and speaking to players I needed to speak to. This year it was raining quite heavily, at least for today. Not sure if that had any effect though.

Felt like there were less adults at the tournament this year, which would account maybe for the lesser numbers. This is one of the biggest issues facing Gold Coast chess.

Spot on, I went to one comp there and there is a big gap in the middle ratings, if one can't challenge the top they end up playing lots of weakish juniors. This could put adults off, even myself and comparatively speaking I love juniors.

Keep the juniors but we need the adults of midlevel to get the balance.

Casey has been a good junior since 1998. We went down to Adelaide in 1998 thinking that Gareth was pretty right to win the under 10 title. Unfortuantely Queensland had sent down Casey and Craig Barnard, (Casey was a year older than Craig) and they (not knowing about Gareth), thought one of them were going to win the under 10 title. Both Barnard boys played exceptionally well and right up until the last round the title could have gone to any of the three. Craig and Gareth met in the last round Gareth won that encounter and the title. Craig has pretty much given up chess (or so I understand), but Casey is always around getting quietly stronger. I think he came second in the under 12 in Canberra in 2001. He hasn't played an Aus Juniors for a bit, but he is on my list of juniors who I think is capable of winning in Brisbane.

Great result for Moulthun. He will be pleased with the win over Solo - he must have been sharking him in that training match!!

It would have been much less last year too, except that last year most uni students had finished exams, this year it's right in the middle of the exam block. The only uni student playing in the field that I saw was Phachara, who told me he didn't care about his finals this semester as he's changing his degree next semester.

The other reason is last year they had the NECG squad up here.

But hey, this is a fantastic turnout compared with the Queen's Birthday tournament here last weekend... 10 people?!?!

It would have been much less last year too, except that last year most uni students had finished exams, this year it's right in the middle of the exam block. Which QB are you talking about? That is exactly the amount that was predicted by chess gurus that would turn up for the SEC.

I had hoped for more than 10, but the QBWeekend is a dud weekend up here. Many tournaments have been tried and failed/fallen over on QBW.

BCC will be trying again next year, but probably only for two days, instead of three.

Sorry to gloat but the only thing PaulS ever praised me for was my ability to get bums on seats.
