In relevance to the thread's topic now and I suffered a serious injury in the gastric area muscles during weightlifting yesterday, I was in pain during the tournament game last night, I might have to be admitted to the hospital today if it doesn't get any better! Cheers all, see you soon (I hope)! :)

After years of playing for a small-town highschool team without sufficient player strength in the rest of the team to make the finals, Alastair is at a different school now and his team (Don College), which won the highschool today, must be a serious state title threat.

This possibility of Alastair being in college dawned on me a little while ago, it will be a serious threat indeed. We had a player ,potentially talented Lance Walsh, go back to New Zealand this year which was a bit dissapointing because he had commitment but hopefully we can make do without and perhaps if possible some help from Marcus (If he is allowed).

First I am disappointed there is not a welcome committee for my return. And secondly that the board is also a bit flat on my return. No real excitement, and I notice that I did not miss much either.

I promise to brighten things up in the next few days but only on condition that JAK seriously consider positing me back on top ten posters to watch. Otherwise I might spit the dummy like Serena and nobody wants to see that.

:hmm: you say that like this thread is any different from a lot of the others on here :P

The main point of the thread from my understanding is for mods/admins to inform the board when they are not going to be around so requests are not to be directed to them.

Over time it has become a general comings and goings thread for all the board :uhoh:

The friendly skys are opening up,

Sprouty will be heading out on ems new years adventure here in a couple of days. Da sprout will be relaxing to the maxing (fully recline mode on da lounge chair) in Hawaii via cali.

Sprouty lately has been teaming up with ems good friend thats a celtic gold/silversmith whom lives now in hawaii. We will be designing new celtic fine jewerly at ems studio in berkely cali. Then we will be off to ems house in hawaii for new years. Meh just luv to start the new year off on da beach-its frankly the only way to live life to the fullest m8's ;)

While on this trip sprouty will be designing a new celtic silver high cross pendant. This cross will be a true cross (2 sided) pendant. Should be big -but not to heavy & thick

Sprout found out ems mistakes from first celtic cross design last yr. It was a big sabbath cross, way to thick & one sided.(the cross could possibly knock out a tooth while running)

This working vacation should be very relaxing for meh. Will be horseback riding in maui- um possibly could be scuba diving this time around. (sproutums with barracuda & sharks could be very interesting to say the least) Meh main port of call will be beachside in wikiki on the big isle. Heck Might Have to try some deep sea Fishing

Lets see, gots to stick to the thread topic- will be gone at least three weeks. Will be back home in arizona around the end of jan/11. Sprouty will be traveling lite(learning from rick steves dvds) not taking meh bulky laptop.

Plz dont pull da plug on this site or let ac gain control(sprouty thinks ac is from the dark side of da force) while meh is away:eh:

Six days in Roma, then a window of opportunity on NY Eve. The only available route involved backtracking west to Charleville, south to Cunnamulla, east to St George, SE to Goondawindi then NE to Brisbane. Just got through - the bridge at St George went under a few hours behind us. The 500 km home run became a 1400 km scenic route

Makes my 100 km diversion due to flooding around Narrandera and Wagga Wagga look like a Saturday morning stroll to the corner store. :)

Thank Jon, but it was only an inconvenience for us (as well as an unplanned expense - six days in a motel). The people whose homes went under are doing it a lot tougher.

I was living in Rocky during the '91 flood. Our street was cut at both ends (as expected from the flood map when we bought) but the house stayed high and dry. The only real challenge was coping with empty supermarket shelves. Staples were getting through by barge, but feline essentials like cat litter became unobtainable :)

Seeing how this is da commings and goings thread meh will make it official- oh my- YES !!!! sprouty is on summer tour 2011.

Wont be doing much art but mainly into growing the venue list into new festivals in michigan and tx. Possibly might be getting some of meh art into a famous art gallery on mackinaw island mi. Also possiblities in dallas/ft.worth art festivals. Totally trying to be getting away from the arizona art scene which is really a cali/hawaii scene misplaced.:hmm:

Will be working alot in the concert photography scene but away from arizona and mainly detroit/chicargo venues this tour. Sprout also will be working on natural michigan scenery and some location test shots for up and comming film projects.

Lets see, sprout will also be trying to write alot on new movie script & a couple new book endevors. got to also try and just get into the habit of writing everyday and not typing on a pc keyboard.(some thangs u got to keep secret ) :wall:

Got alot on the plate this tour. will definatly be very busy but will try and make it a point and keep in touch with chesschats on this tour. Shouldnt be all like da hawaii trips in da past were the remoteness kept sprout offline

I was OK on the way over; Qantas were clearly trying very hard to counteract the effects of the strike but struggling to do so quickly. Almost got out an hour early out of Sydney and then the departure time was moved back four or five times; ended up getting out an hour and a half late but in the end only 10-15 mins late into Frankfurt. Just as well because getting through all the security theatre and navigation around Frankfurt airport took one and a half hours leaving me making the connection with only 30 mins to spare.

All's well that ends well. Luckily you were on the QF2 flight out of Bangkok for Sydney this morning. There was a loud bang and shuddering and the flight had to return to Bangkok. Although not related I always wonder if there is a correlation between the occurrences of these stories and industrial action of maintenance engineers.

Was there any sight seeing ?

Not a lot of time for it really. The afternoon of the rest day got filled up with extra Commission meetings. Most people went on a bus tour of the city in the morning but I have different preferences for places to go and hired a driver to take me out to Ojcow National Park (limestone area on the outskirts of Krakow). Left early so I got back in time for the meetings. Thus I missed the main sightseeing tour but I had about 2 hrs free in the Old Town after the EB meeting finished a bit early anyway. There was also a bit of an opportunity to explore during lunchtimes, but not that much as the in-theory 2 hour breaks were usually eroded by meetings running overtime.

The final evening included a tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wieliczka_Salt_Mine) including a final dinner underground.

The salt mine itself was very spacious; classical music has even been recorded in one of the larger chambers because of its acoustics. I am quite tall and I did not hit my head on anything.

The lift up was a bit of a squeeze!

All up I think we were underground for three or four hours.

Well, the weather report warned of thunderstorms and wild rainfalls, so I am back to Melbourne since it's safer here than in the mountains with those high temperatures and fire dangers!

However, here is some more or my pictures from Olinda and the Dandenongs in general.

Breakfast at the Observatory

Melbourne from the Dandenongs

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/100_8554.jpg

My favourite relaxation spot was invaded by some noisy hijab wearing women with their undisciplined kids

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/100_8519.jpg

... While their husbands occupied the other side of the clearance playing this silly game (karambol or something) which was described to me as ... sister of snooker. The idea is to knock white and black marbles into the four holes flicking a larger discoid on them! Now check that rag around the playing area. These people had occupied the whole place with it, and some other blanket type material not allowing others to go through or the kids to play around there! They had to be told off politely first and in no uncertain terms by some other citizens who wanted to enjoy a bit of a shade without paying in either The Maze or in the main Observatory Cafe. Finally, they left after the rangers were called to inform them that public places are for all people and not for some selected few!

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/100_8534.jpg

Well the real estate in and around Olinda is rather expensive for first house buyers but the food in restaurants and take - aways is plentiful and cheap!

and whose side are you on at Skullbone Plains?

Really neither. Skullbone Plains is a large property adjoining the World Heritage Area that was formerly owned by timber company Gunns, which sold off much of its native forest estate a few years back. Skullbone was bought by Jan Cameron (founder of outdoor shop Kathmandu) and is now being taken over by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy if enough money can be raised. See http://www.tasland.org.au/newleaf and http://www.fortysouth.com.au/articles/articles60/60_NewLeaf.pdf

The survey I am on is called the Bush Blitz and is a federal environment department series of surveys aiming at documenting the fauna of reserves that have been bought by the federal government or with federal government assistance. There was a round of these surveys in several Tasmanian reserves two years ago and an intended mainland survey got cancelled so Tasmania got another round and Skullbone was chosen.

hi Jak and All,

India was amazing - we stayed in Hare Krishna ashrams did yoga and meditation most days and had a most wonderful guide.
We spent most time in Rishikesh in northern India a nd did some treking of Himalayan foothills. The last 4 days we were in Vrindaven the place of a thousand temples - visited some sacred lakes Radha kunda and Kusuma Sarovar where Krishna and Rama had some fun.

The food , people and spiritual wealth of this part of India with the Ganga flowing past is something we all should see.

You go out your front door and walk 40 paces and you have seen cows monkeys (lots of monkeys) dogs etc etc.

Had a couple of their fabled full body massages and Ayurveda seminars.

I have never before seen a two lane highway become a 7 lane highway in ten minutes - I will never drive in India.

Nothing actually happens when it is supposed to but it happens and its great - we discovered that like everything else in India traffic food spiritually India seems to be organised chaos - truly a great adventure holiday!!

My telling of this tale is a bit like India big on passion chaos and rambling:)

Visited an orphan school and coached chess there for a few hours - left my chess set with them and will send them two more sets , chess teaching software and 1 book designed to be used by more advanced chess players - the orphans were so passionate about chess.

Good report George and glad you enjoyed the experience! I don't have Asia in my plans for the rest of 2012, since there is only a few months since my last tour there! well they should give you plenty of exercise. What do you do when raining, come back another day?

Fieldwork for snails can be done in almost any weather and obviously rain is not too bad for them (though very small ones will actually hide from heavy rain to avoid drowning). The worst weather for looking for snails involves snow (covers habitats up) or heavy frost (freezes rocks together making them hard to move apart). I'll sometimes stop if it is very cold and very wet at the same time (not much fun for me), or if it is very windy (tree-fall hazard).

If by yourself what about snakes?

Snakes here are generally no big deal. Although two of our three species are theoretically deadly, nearly all snakes will get out of the way and few are aggressive. I've seen hundreds and out of those only one blocked my path, and one reared up at me (I jumped backwards and it then did much the same).

I do much of my fieldwork solo but in this case was in walkie-talkie contact within a few hundred metres of others (at most) at all times. We saw two tiger snakes and five white-lips (white-lips are venemous but not dangerous).

For those wondering the expedition I went on was quite successful; I recorded a pretty good diversity of species (17) for the area but it doesn't look like I found any new species this time. My best find was a snail that was 52 km from the nearest previous record of its species. These days with the amount of mapping I have done, extensions of that size do not happen often.

There were a few media reports of our excursion, but I was not involved in either because I was busy on other parts of the property. The one on Tasmanian Stateline was good but the one in the Mercury (local newspaper) was riddled with errors.

Do any snails just get a lift from trollers just to throw you off course? Very easy to do.

Now if you found Malcolm Naden that would be big time

Not really; even if someone knew I was going to a particular site they would still have to guess exactly where I would look in order to put a specimen where I would find it.

Tasmanian species do sometimes get introduced outside their natural range by accident but I have no reason to believe this was such a case.
