It was my pleasure to be the arbiter for the event. This was my first outing as an arbiter on Australian soil, so I was fortunate to receive considerable technical assistance from David Esmonde who wrangled Vega and (to my slight embarrassment) provided necessary coaching on the operation of DGTs. Thanks David!

The event attracted 24 entries from women and girls, including a few adults who had been largely inactive in recent years. The younger girls confirmed yet again what all SE Queensland players surely know by now, that any junior (girl or boy) in the region with an ACF rating of 500 or more needs be taken very seriously indeed. They are often very well coached and typically gain plenty of experience establishing themselves and generally dominating the highly organised school circuits in SEQ. Indeed, it was remarkable to observe two games where seven or eight year old girls calmly and convincingly outplayed teenage girls with much higher ratings!

Here's the so-called 'rating favourite' match:

Leteisha Simmonds (1597)-WIM Alexandra Jule (2038)
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nc3 c6 5.Bd3 Bd6 6.Nge2 Bg4 7.f3 Bh5 8.Bf4 Nf6 9.Qd2 Bg6 10.Bxd6 Qxd6 11.Nf4 Nbd7 12.Qe3+ Qe7 13.Qxe7+ Kxe7 14.O-O Rhe8 15.Rfe1+ Kd6 16.Bxg6 hxg6 17.Nd3 g5 18.h3 Ng8 19.g4 Ne7 20.Re2 Ng6 21.Rae1 Rxe2 22.Rxe2 b6 23.Re1 Ndf8! After this instructive manoeuvre Black soon establishes a monster knight on f4 which then wreaks havoc in White's position 24.Kf2 Ne6 25.Ne2 c5 26.dxc5+ bxc5 27.c3 c4! 28.Nb4 Ngf4 29.Nxf4 Nxf4 30.Kg3 Rb8 31.h4 f6 32.hxg5 fxg5 33.Rb1 a5 34.Nc2 Ne2+ 35.Kf2 Nxc3 36.Rh1 Rxb2 37.Rc1 Nxa2 38.Ke3 Nxc1 0-1
Connoisseurs of the Exchange French Defence ending for Black might also like to take a look at Gurevich-Short (Manila Interzonal, 1990) here (https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1124451).

Finally, here's a brevity with an eye-catching finish between the eventual second place-getters:

Xintong Zhang (724)-Mia Jigando Balan (982)
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.dxc5 d4 5.Nb5 Bxc5 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.Bf4 e5! 8.Nxe5 Bb4+ 9.Nc3 dxc3 10.Qxd8+ Nxd8 11.b3 Ne6 12.Bg3? c2# 0-1
