We have a thread for famous Australians who play chess (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?13967-Famous-Australians-who-play-chess), but I don't think we have one for the rest of the world. This is that thread.

Henry Cavill with his girlfriend Natalie Viscuso, playing on what looks like a very nice Game of Thrones set.

Peter Theil, co founder of Paypal and former CEO has a FIDE rating of 2199 although he hasn't played any FIDE rated chess since 2000 when he played the US Open.

Kaspersky - the founder of Kaspersky Lab is quite a decent player too.

From memory, Humphrey Bogart played chess. In fact, in that scene in Casablanca where we was shuffling chess pieces around, he was the one that insisted in having that scene in the movie.

But isn't this thread restricted to living celebrities, as the title says "play" rather than "played"? If it isn't, I'll add Ava Gardner and Lauren Bacall - here's a photo (https://www.sheworestars.com/blog/famous-chess-players)of Bogart and Bacall playing.

I can confirm that the thread can accept offerings from celebrities who used to play chess when they were alive (when else should they play?). Though I may challenge if Bogart could draw better name-recognition than, say, Schwarzenegger, at least in some demographics.

Former Danish Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen wrote in 2005 a chess book (together with the (chess) autor) Peter DŘrrfeld called "Det ligger i stillingen - En bog om skak og politik". ["It's in the position - a book about chess and politics"]. Not a bad book at all in my honest opinion.

NHP never played in a tournament, but during his whole life he played postal chess. And probably took part in simuls ... We lived around 300 metres from each other, so I often met him in the evenings, when he was out with his dog. He "promised me" that he would play tournament chess when he retired, but he later regretted and started playing bridge with his wife Kirsten. Once he told me that he read my chess columns in the Danish magazine Skakbladet, but I think he mostly mentioned that in order to be polite ...

If we are considering the dead then Marcel Duchamp must be mentioned.

From what I can see of the position it looks both sides have some idea what they are doing. Both sides have castled, the pawn structures seem reasonable and no pieces on strange squares.
