Although details have been confirmed very late in the piece because of delays with confirming the venue, the Sturges Memorial (set positions theme tournament plus blitz) will be on in Hobart on Anzac Day. The event commemorates Tony (Thelston) Sturges (1953-2013) (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?14663-RIP-Tony-(Thelston)-Sturges-(1953-2013)), a great Tasmanian character, patron of the chess scene and its players and devotee of offbeat openings. This is a fundraiser for the TCA. The 7th annual Sturges Memorial scheduled for 2020 was cancelled due to COVID.

Today with not many juniors present we decided to go for mostly Tony-ish gambits with a few other (in some cases dubious) things thrown in. Next year if we have more lead in time we will probably have more orthodox openings.

Scores given are for white:

Round 1 Sodium Attack 1. Na3 (score +2-3)
Round 2 Latvian Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 (score +2-3)
Round 3 Queens Gambit Accepted 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 (score +3-2)
Round 4 Kings Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.f4 (score +2-2=1)
Round 5 Stafford Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nc6 (score +2-3)
Round 6 Myers Defence 1.c4 g5 (score +2-3)
Round 7 Lisitsin Gambit 1.Nf3 f5 2.e4 (score +2-2=1)

I was 5/5 then went draw-loss and Toby won the tournament.

Between the two tournaments we raised $410 for the TCA which is not bad given we only knew we had the venue 2 weeks ago and the timing was difficult for promotion for many reasons.

Sincere thanks to HCC for keeping the Tony Sturges Memorial alive. $410 is a good result and will help keep the wolf from the TCA door for another year.

I've always liked the idea that Tony Sturges' generosity of spirit is remembered and celebrated through this event, where the players give without any expectation of personal reward. It seems fitting.

Congratulations to everyone who supported it; to Kevin & Oscar for winning it; and to Toby for winning the Blitz.

It's good that this tourney has been going so long. QGA seems out of place though.

Perhaps a bit orthodox for Tony; I definitely saw him play the Albin and I think he also played the Baltic (2...Bf5) at least once.

The openings this year were decided on a very spur of the moment basis on the day except for the Stafford which had been suggested by a bunch of players at the club a couple of weeks earlier.
