The venue and dates are now confirmed for the 2021 Tasmanian Championships.

Ian Little is finalising the entry form and I'll post a link to it when it's ready. In the meantime, please be advised that Launceston are hosting the event at the YMCA in Kings Meadows from Sat. March 6 - Monday, March 8. As usual, it's a 7 round swiss. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for 1.30 p.m., with R.1 to commence at 2 p.m.
The 2021 AGM will be held shortly after the closing ceremony. I hope everyone can make it.

Goodluck to Queensland Junior, Jeeva Praveen

Indeed! Jeeva was planning to play in the Begonia, but those plans were interrupted by the travel restrictions. Interstate entries are ineligible for the title, but welcome to the money. Players already registered with their State Association don't need to register with the TCA to play.
I've sent reminder emails to everyone who played in the 2020 Launceston Cup and the 2020 LCC Northern Champions, but who haven't yet registered, so we might get a few more. Unfortunately, Toby Straton has a wedding gig and can't play this year. Roger Blackburn, Luwanna Beeton & Bayani Beeton have also now entered, bringing the total to 18.

Hello, for previous tournaments I have seen things about accommodation sharing, I was just wondering, is there anything of the sort happening for this tournament, and if so, is there any more space available?

Hello, for previous tournaments I have seen things about accommodation sharing, I was just wondering, is there anything of the sort happening for this tournament, and if so, is there any more space available?

Hi Thomas - I had to book a 3 bedroom place early this year, for the sake of finding anywhere, so can't help. When checking airb'nb, there seemed to be less 4 or 5 bedroom places available this year. Even 3 bedroom places within reasonable proximity to the venue weren't that easy to find. Not sure if this has anything to do with the pandemic or not.

At the risk of putting mockers on, I predict he'd perform minimum 200 points above current rating.

He played in the Perth Open last weekend, 1500 performance. (And could have been better: he was piece up against a 1700 before blundering mate.)

Entrant number 26 James Banbury added and edited into list above. We have also had an enquiry from another possible entrant.

The hierarchy I am using for seed ratings for the players who do not have an ACF classic rating is:

1. FIDE rating
2. ACF Quick rating, adjusted for parity - this may be varied if not from Tasmania.
3. TPR estimate from ACF Classic tournament(s)
4. TPR estimate from ACF Quick tournament(s), adjusted for parity - this may be varied if not from Tasmania.
5. Any other information

Small typo I think. Shouldn't the name in the pairings be: Rares-Daniel, Ocoleanu?

With my 1500 brain I am wondering whether 36 .... d4 would have been better for black than swapping off the pawns and knights on e4?
The idea is that black seems to win the white a pawn and would have a great chance of running it to a1.

Worth following the old saw that you should never exchange into a P endgame unless you know you can win the position blindfolded with both hands tied behind your back against your grandmother.

Interesting query Scott but, no, 36...d4 is not much different - using my 2000 (-ish) brain and an engine here and there ;) Later on Black could have improved with 41...Kxc2 when both sides will queen but Black has more pawns on the kingside and therefore retains winning chances.

Also, as Black I would have avoided 29...a5? as giving white two a-pawns in a N+P ending is asking for trouble. After the natural 30.bxa5 (instead of the strange 30.b5?) White would have been better.

I hope the Championship goes well :) One of these days I must come down for another Tassie event!

Tony, I presume that Black was planning 41...Kxc2 but then noticed 42. Kc4 in reply. Black is still more than OK, but maybe he got worried seeing that white would queen first on the queenside. After chasing down the Kingside pawns, black should win all the white pawns.

After chasing down the Kingside pawns, black should win all the white pawns.Yes I think 41.Kd5 was a very good move. 41.Kd6 going after the black kside pawns was too slow, and at least this gives black more to think about, with Kc2 Kc4-b4 etc. Doesn't work, but a good try.

Over 30 players! Am I wrong to assume that this is the biggest Tassie tournament of all held in recent months or even years?

Not quite; we had 33 for the Tasmanian Rapid in December. At 31 this is one off the record for the Tas Champs.

Rumley - Bonham round 7

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.c4 Bb4+ [This seems like a me sort of move. I had prepared 4...Nf6 for a previous game but switched to this on reading Watson volume 4 after having a long time to prepare for playing Will in the final round.] 5.Bd2 [5.Nc3 is the main line here. Against the move played black at least seems to equalise - the argument presumably being that if white will have an IQP any pieces going off the board is good for black.] 5...Bxd2+ 6.Qxd2 Nf6 7.Nc3 0-0 8.Bd3 dxc4 9.Bxc4 c6 10.Nge2 Nbd7 11.0-0 Nb6 12.Bb3 Nbd5 13.Nxd5 Nxd5 14.Nc3 Be6 15.Nxd5 Bxd5 16.Bc2 Qf6 17.b3 Rfd8 18.Rad1 Be6 19.Be4 Bf5 20.Bxf5 Qxf5 21.Qb4 [21.Rfe1 white is objectively holding.] 21...Rd7 22.Qc5 Rd5 23.Qe7 Qd7 24.Rfe1 Rd8 25.Qxd7?! It is hard for black to make progress if white leaves the queens on. 25...R5xd7 26.Re4 f5! Force rook to a passive square. 27.Rf4 Rd5 [27...g6 is more accurate.] 28.h4 [28.Re1 is worth a try.] 28...g6 29.b4 a5 30.Rb1 Rb5 31.a3 axb4 32.Rxb4 [32.axb4 Ra8 33.Rf3 Ra4 34.Rfb3 is probably white's best chance to hold.] 32...Rxb4 33.axb4 Rd5 34.Kf1 Rb5 35.Ke2 Rxb4 36.Kd3 c5 37.g3 Rxd4+ 38.Rxd4 cxd4 39.Kxd4 Kf7 40.Kc5 Ke6 41.f4 Kd7 42.Kb6 Kc8 43.Kc5 Kc7 44.Kd5 b6 [44...h5 is a simpler win because white cannot take the g-pawn and stay inside the square of the b-pawn] 45.h5 Kd7 46.h6 Ke7 47.Kc6 Kf6 48.Kxb6 g5 49.Kc5 gxf4 50.gxf4 Kg6 51.Kd4 Kxh6 52.Ke3 [52.Ke5 Kg6 53.Ke6 h5 54.Ke5 h4 and promotes as white must step out of the square.] 52...Kh5 53.Kf3 Kh4 54.Kg2 Kg4 55.Kh2 Kxf4 56.Kh3 Ke3 57.Kh2 f4 0-1

1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.d4 Bg7 4.Bg2 0-0 5.0-0 d6 I remember years ago deciding that I liked this move without ever registering that it turns into a King's Indian which I really do not know for black! 6.c4 Nbd7 7.Nc3 c5 [7...e5 is the main line of course.] 8.d5 a6 9.Rb1?! [9.a4] 9...b5 10.b3 Long think here because it looks like I should have something very strong but white seems to have adequate answers (just) to whatever I do. 10...b4 [10...Nb6 11.Nd2 b4 12.Nce4] 11.Na4 Ne4 12.Qc2 Ndf6? [12...Nb6! the knight on e4 cannot be taken] 13.Nd2 [13.Nh4! and black has actually tripped over a bit and loses a pawn.] 13...Nxd2 14.Qxd2 [14.Bxd2] 14...Bf5 15.Bb2 presumably unsound but white did get play the exchange down. 15...Bxb1 16.Rxb1 Nd7 17.f4 Nb6 18.Nxb6 Qxb6 19.e4 [19.Bxg7 looks more likely to lead to a swindle here.] 19...Bxb2 20.Qxb2 a5 21.e5 a4 22.h4 axb3 23.axb3 Ra3 24.h5 f6 [24...Qa5 is fine, after 25.h6 Ra2 26.Qc1 Qa3 27.Qf1 Rb2 it is all under control] 25.e6 Qa5 26.Be4 Kg7 27.Qc2 Ra2 28.Qd3 f5 29.Bf3 Ra1 30.Bd1 Qa2 31.Bc2 Rxb1+ 32.Bxb1 Qb2 33.g4 Ra8 34.gxf5 Ra1 0-1

what happened to that QLD boy wonder? Looks like the Tasmanians proved a tad too strong for him! Well, to be fair 20th out of 31 and 3/7 isn't that bad! maybe better next tournament!

Still a 1450 performance (counting Duboudin as a 1088 as per seeding), comfortably above his rating.

Congrats to Ian and Kevin   I was especially impressed with the latest KB Houdini act, this time involving winning on demand with Black twice in a row!

very unclear though...35...Bf8 makes queening impossible so Rxf8 Ra7
also, black may play f3+ first followed up by Bf8.
Last but not least...may allow Rg8+ and get R & B vs queen.

I think Addison has taught me a valuable lesson here. The short version of which is ‘Don’t Panic’.

The longer version, having survived a crazy opening I had a platform to strike back via rooks on an open file. But after playing 23 Rxb6 I hadn’t considered the reply f5. At this crux moment my confidence collapsed thinking that I had blundered – I then proceeded to blunder by not finding Rc6.

This is the same thing that happened to me last night. At the crucial moment thinking I don’t understand the position I panic. In both cases I had plenty of time in hand (in this game well over an hour), so why not get up from the board go for a walk and come back with a clear head.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Below position is from Amos-Peirce, White has just played 35.Qf6-Qb6+ (winning is the very difficult to see Nf4!!), which throws away the win and unbelievably is a forced draw with best play! The game continued 35... Ke8 36. Qb5+ Rd7?? (Kd8 draws) I avoided 35...Kd8 because I thought Qb8 was checkmate, even though I knew the Queen covered that square!

Because of the high number of ACF Classic unrated players in the tournament I had a bit of fun with the TPRs by entering them all in pappubahry's calculator then iterating the TPRs for the unrated players until they more or less stabilised.

Of the players with existing ratings, Luwanna Beeton performed the most above rating, and also well above rating were John Patrick, Jeeva Praveen, Eddy Amos and Roger Blackburn. Of the unrated players Christian Duboudin was the standout and could have scored even higher had he not unavoidably missed round 3.

My classic rating will be interesting, could be anywhere from 1300-1900:P (Since my 1737 is ~4yrs old)
EDIT: I'm guessing my wins over Denis,John and Andrew Martini (1743, 1466 and 1406) will outweigh my losses to Kevin and Eddy (2065 and 1530) with both my draws being against UNR (Christian and Daniel) :hmm:
EDIT 2: Depending on how it weights my draws with Christian and Daniel, somewhere between 1700-1750 seems likely.

Because of the high number of ACF Classic unrated players in the tournament I had a bit of fun with the TPRs by entering them all in pappubahry's calculator then iterating the TPRs for the unrated players until they more or less stabilised.

So I've gone from top improver (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?18350-ACF-March-2021-Ratings&p=477903&viewfull=1#post477903) to biggest loser in the space of a week.

A few other things worth bearing in mind for those trying to crystal-ball possible ratings changes:

* The ratings system uses intermediate ratings for performance calculations (I haven't done this above) so your rated opponent counts as somewhere between their previous rating and their performance rating for the period being rated. Players most likely to benefit from this include Little, Amos and Shepherd.

* Games played against unrated opponents have relatively little impact on your rating but their internal ratings will be affected by other tournaments as well. This especially concerns Banbury who performed at >1700 in last year's Tas Open, but others with internal ratings that will be different include Keerthiratne (somewhat higher) and Ocoleanu (somewhat lower).

... Games played against unrated opponents have relatively little impact on your rating ...

I had always thought games against unrated players had zero impact on one's rating. Or am I wrong?

This is not the case in the ACF's implementation of the Glicko-2 system. Unrated players do have some impact provided that some kind of performance can be calculated for them (for very weak unrated players this is sometimes impossible, eg those who have lost every rated game). The system stores an internal rating estimate but these estimates are not published as they are too unreliable to use for purposes like seedings, selections and ratings prizes.

Thanks for explaining Kevin. The Glicko system never fails to surprise me!

Congrats on another Tasmanian Championship title too  Your seven titles has edged ahead of my six. You have some work to do to overtake Otto Weber's 13 titles though!

Yes, but I recalled that Addison had a famous 8 move win with the Englund Gambit the previous year 2020-Tasmanian-Championships (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?17871-2020-Tasmanian-Championships&p=462922&viewfull=1#post462922)

Which I think influenced me to decline the gambit. But as played it was white who gives up a pawn for nothing

Yes, not the best start. Here are some ideas:

1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 4.Bf4 {sharpest and probably best}
(4.Nc3 Nxe5 5.e4 {gives P back with a simple advantage: White has centre P and Black's Q looks silly})
(4.Qd5 f6 5.exf6 Nxf6 6.Qb3 {make Black prove that he has enough for a P})
4...Qb4+ 5.Bd2 Qxb2 6.Nc3!
(6.Bc3?? Bb4 7.Qd2 Bxc3 8.Qxc3 Qc1# {the most infamous Englund trap})
6...Bb4 7.Rb1 Qa3 8.Nd5 Bxd2+ 9.Qxd2 Kd8 10.e4 Nge7 11.Be2 h6 12.O-O Qa5 13.Qf4 {Black has a yucky position and hasn't even a P for his troubles}

Thanks. As it happens, I noticed this lesson in my chess.com feed today: refuted-englund-gambit (https://www.chess.com/lessons/every-gambit-refuted/every-gambit-refuted-englund-gambit) which agrees with your analysis.

GM Eugene Perelshteyn is back with a guide to refute another gambit. The Englund Gambit is unsound, but popular in fast time controls. Take a look and never get tricked by this opening again.
