Melbourne Chess Club Saturday Allegro

Where: The Melbourne Chess Club: 66 Leicester Street, Fitzroy

When: Every Saturday 2pm (finishes about 6pm), except the Saturday of Melbourne Cup (or as announced*).

Format: 7 round Swiss, 13 minutes plus 2 second increment per move (you play all rounds).

Cost: $12 Adult Member, $10 Junior Member, $22 Adult non-Member, $20 Junior non-Member. (GMs/WGMs free, Club Members IMs/WIMs and FMs/WFMs Free)

Prizes: About 80% of the collected entry fee goes back into the prizes. Typically there is an open division and at least two rating group divisions (depending on numbers).
Late Fee: There is a $5 fee for registering for the Allegro late (after 2 pm) using cash. There is no penalty for registering for the Allegro late if entering online.

Entry: Via Tornelo webpage, before 2pm Saturday start. Please check this thread and the MCC webpage (see below at "further information") for the link to the relevant Tornelo webpage as this link will change for every Allegro.

Entries may also be accepted at the Club prior to the 2pm Saturday start - However, we highly recommend prior registration in Tornelo. This discourages the use of cash and allows the organisers to estimate attendance for each Allegro.
We do not recommend arriving at the club without first registering in Tornelo as you may miss out on entry to the Allegro if the limit on field size is reached.

Ratings: Rated using Tornelo. You'll receive a rating after your first allegro.

Contact: Alexei Khamatgaleev 0426 731 726 or Chris Kolak at the club

Become a Member for big discounts on all our events.

* Please check this thread for any announcements of other Saturdays that may not be hosting Allegro - this could happen if there is a lack of capacity due to another tournament hosted at MCC (e.g. MCC Fast Play Championship, etc)

I can only imagine how many entries we are going to start getting weekly once the covid restrictions are over. I wonder if other chess clubs are experiencing similar growth. I suspect that as many people picked up chess while in lockdown - a least some of the chess clubs do!@

Looks like the former (https://tornelo.com/chess/orgs/melbourne-chess-club/events/mcc-allegro-over-the-board--10/lobby), but the club hasn't said what is happening to other events (Saturday Morning Juniour Coaching, Round 3 of City of Melbourne Open and Blitz night on Saturdaym Monday and Tuesday respectively).
The club is in lockdown same as the rest of the state.

Michael. I
12-02-2021, 05:27 PM
Well, yes, and I just changed that :-)
The only things are that MCC states on its website and email it sent out that Allegro isn't running without saying it will be online and if there will be divisions like there were the last time MCC Allegro wasn't OTB* (by the way, what's the purpose of that?)
*somewhat ironic to the title of this thread that this years' edition of this tournament will be OTB.

Just for information.
We had today in Allegro Open group (4 prizes: $200, $100, $65 and $40) plus 4 Rating groups (with two prizes in each group; Group 1 - $60 and $20, Groups 2-4 - $50 and $20).
The easy rule we follow determining the number of groups is: we have 4 rating groups in the tournament with >65 players or 3 rating groups for 65 players or less.

Note that majority of those who shined in their categories (and the overall winner of the tournament) in the ANZAC Day Weekender are regular allegro players! Practice makes it perfect!

I have heard from a reliable source that GM Ian Rogers is in Melbourne currently and might visit MCC during the Allegro today.

I also understand that Ian has written a book on the late Australian IM Terrey Shaw, and that he may say a few words about his book and on Terrey.

I doubt Ian will play, but I would encourage everyone at Allegro to make Ian and his wife Cathy feel welcomed if they do visit.

I had an upset in Round 1 by zeitnot - my first ever Round 1 win in an Allegro :) - but it didn't win the biggest upset prize of $20, then another win (perfect score for the 1st 2 rounds) f.b. losses for the rest of the tournament. It's not recent I scored 3 points in an Allegro but at least this time I tried harder to the point that I thought my brain was getting tired without actually feeling it. (and feeling like it went slower this time.)

Interesting moments include :):
1. In the 2nd game I won, my opponent had only 1 way to stop checkmate, but with a bishop trade I had a chance of not seeing I could renew the threat, this time unstoppable.
2. Other interesting moments (within the games I lost) include 'entombing' the enemy queen (but I couldn't quite capture it because I didn't see an attacking piece) and some trades (such as when it didn't seem to matter that when I gave check, I gave it from a rook that could be taken).

Completely winning I personally wouldn't say because to my knowledge, I saw some possible resistance from the other side :).

Anthony Harris rather than taking whatever eldritch orange drink he had last time I saw him when I thought he under-performed this time he takes a large bottle of water and wins his first allegro (share win, outright win same difference) in all seriousness though congrats to him.

Also if you want to read the Tornelo page in a slightly different way just go to the URL and take out the bit after "mcc-allegro-over-the-board--20/" and replace it with it with "pairings" and you can see everyone's rating change among other things.

Nope, the longer the Jackpot is not taken - the bigger it gets so it keeps up the intrigue. Last time it was there...I think it was me who got it and it was 60 bucks or so...now I think it got up to 50 bucks so let it keep going - extra incentive for the players.

Due to feedback concerning late starts to Allegros caused by late comers, MCC has decided to institute the following procedures:

Check-in procedure:
As you arrive at MCC at 2 pm, please remember to check-in at the Arbiter's desk (i.e. tick the box next to your name on the list of players). The first round will be paired at around 2:10 pm. Late arrivals will be given a first round bye, as our aim to have everyone seated and ready for play at 2:15 pm.

I think after attending last week the problem is two-fold.

Of course the people signing up to the allegro in person takes a lot of time but so does the process of going to the registration and clicking your name.

If for example we ignore the people that signed into the allegro in person and we have a fairly normal estimate of say 60 people at the allegro in my view it works out like this:

At 1:55 about 10 people are in the building and signed in to the allegro (this is maybe an underestimate but I don't think it's above 20).

Past this time you have 50 people signing in.

If you allow 20 seconds for each person to sign in (making it to the desk to use the mouse to click the box and make sure it's the right one I think this is a fair time allowance in fact it might be lowballed) that means it would take over 15 minutes just for already registered players to confirm they are ready.

I think at say 1:55 or 2:00 or 2:05 you need someone to sit at the desk and just call people's names out, because you can just call out people's name and they will say here and in a minute or two you've got 30 people signed in.

Now the second half of this problem is People registering in-person especially those without Tornelo accounts, don't really know how to fix that.

Yeah sure of course but I think the event should be prepared for say 80 percent of people who have already registered online arriving at no earlier than 1:55 (I think 1:55 is a fair enough time given the inconsistency of traffic in inner Melbourne plus annoying public transport routes, it also doesn't intuitively feel like it should keep anyone waiting arriving 5 minutes early when you've already registered online)

I think people should arrive even earlier of course and I would greatly encourage that but I don't expect to go from 80 percent at 1:55 or later to say 30 percent in one week. Doesn't mean we can't aim for it, just nice to have back ups

In one of the rounds, I had an already castled king, and I accidentally knocked one of the pawns in the formation to the end of the board (with my water bottle). I wish (kind of) that this would qualify as suitable grounds to promote that pawn. But there's a chance it would be taken by a rook on the opponent's back rank, unless I could instead put a queen on that square (I suppose that itself needs to be approved by the rules of chess, even if the pawn was legally 'knocked' to promotion :)).

You're welcome :)

The club will reopen for over-the-board chess with our first event being our Allegro on Saturday 6th November.
MCC will be following all current government directives. These currently include the following:
-entry to MCC is only allowed for fully vaccinated people
-we will take steps (within reason) to confirm the vaccination status of all people attending MCC.
-people with a medical exemption for vaccination will need to show valid proof
-people under 16 do not need to be vaccinated to attend the club, consistent with government directives.
-we will have capacity limits based on MCC's size in sqm (the limit of OTB Allegro 06/11 is 50 players).
-masks must be worn indoors
See this link for details about our Saturday Allegros: https://www.melbournechessclub.org/e...turday-allegro

We have decided to first re-open the club for Allegro only. We will communicate more details about the reopening of other regular over-the-board MCC sessions (Monday night tournaments, Tuesday blitz, Wednesday social night, and Saturday Morning Junior Coaching, other tournaments) when our plans for these are finalised.

Please register here: https://tornelo.com/chess/orgs/melbourne-chess-club/events/mcc-allegro-over-the-board---4/summary

The number of participants is strictly limited by 50, so please, do not be late with the registration!

The MCC tornelo events page shows that there is an Allegro Championship Saturday week on the 27th. Just wanted to confirm that the championship is going ahead/official.

A suggestion is that it should be 9 Rounds.
That makes this coming allegro practice i guess ;)

As the restrictions will be lifted partially from 11:59pm Thursday 18 November 2021 MCC is happy to inform the players of Allegro:
- no more capacity limit in MCC. The tournament limit of 50 players increased to 80 players. We will watch the number of registered players for further updates.
- face masks are no more required.

However only fully vaccinated visitors are allowed to enter MCC. All visitors and staff must do check-in using the Service Victoria QR Code app.

But you are still top seed a head of them.

Just marginally. Those ratings are not significant. Generally, with Tornelo, If I keep playing regularly and they play just occasionally - they are likely to overtake me (particularly Ari). With Tornelo, keeping rating is very hard. For instance last event I scored 6/7...and lost 9 points. Fide with the same field - would keep my rating.

Please note that next Saturday (27 November) will be the 2021 MCC Championship.

This is a 9 round Allegro (instead of the usual 7 rounds).

A new separate thread (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?18630-2021-MCC-Allegro-Championship-(9-rounds)) has been created for this event.
