2020 Victorian Country Chess Championship

Promoted by the Victorian Rural Chess League

Sponsored by Geelong Short Stays

To all Victorian Country Chess Players:

We are very pleased to advise that following the relaxation of the Covid 19 restrictions on indoor events by the Victorian Government as from 23 November, that we are able to hold the 2020 Victorian Country Chess Championship in a relatively normal fashion.

The championships will be hosted again by the Geelong Chess Club and will be held in the same venue as last year - St Mary’s Terrace Community Hub in Myers Street.

We appreciate the sponsorship of Geelong Short Stays and suggest that they be contacted for all accommodation requirements. Telephone 0407 711 707, email accom.in.geelong@outlook.com or visit their website at www.geelongshortstays.com.au (http://www.geelongshortstays.com.au)

Given the serious implications of the COVID19 pandemic, the organizers will have a COVID Safe Plan in place and this will be supervised by a COVID Safe Monitor. Games will be played in 2 rooms and tables will be appropriately spaced at safe distances. Other usual COVID Safe procedures will also be in place. There will be a limit of 28 entries for the championship which is the maximum allowable under Government density quotient rules. This happens to be the same number of entries received in 2019. Final entries will be decided by those who have paid their entry fees in advance by EFT to the nominated bank account as shown on the attached flyer and entry form. If anyone decides to pay on the day then they may well have to miss out due to COVID maximum participant restrictions. If for any reason the event has to be cancelled then all entry fees which have been paid will be refunded.

Please note the location eligibility requirements, and restricted number of entries this year.

The entry details along with a history of the tournament can be found on the website:
https://ballaratchess.com/events/2020/2020vrcl.html

Flyer can be downloaded from here:
https://ballaratchess.com/events/2020/2020%20VCCC%20Flyer.pdf

Given the current government Covid 19 restrictions on public gatherings for indoor events, there will be a maximum of 28 entries accepted. The event will be played in 2 separate rooms with tables spaced at appropriate distances and other Covid safe procedures will be in place. A Covid Safe Monitor will be appointed to ensure they are followed.

Eligibility:
The Victorian Country Chess Championship is open to all Victorian players whose main place of residence is outside a 50 km radius from the Melbourne GPO.

Rate of Play & Half Point Bye:

This must be done in writing, email or text message prior to the tournament or before the start of the previous round.

Prizes:
All entry fees will be distributed in prizes after deduction of expenses in conducting the event. Prizes will be awarded to the first three players in the Championship and Reserve sections. If there is a tie for a title then joint champions will be declared and prize money divided equally. All players will compete in a single tournament. The prize pool will be allocated 75% to the Championship and 25% to the Reserve.

Reserve Champion:
The title of Reserve Champion will be awarded to the leading player(s) in the bottom half of the field based on rating or seeding by the Arbiter.

I am here, just trying to clarify

1) V-line's intentions re allowing Melbourne to Gelong travel. Will try to combine visit with picnic at Buckley's Falls.
2) Organisers' intention to allow Covid-19 rule abiding visitors during tournament.
3) Confirm event's venue. Is it the one on the right side of the street as we go down toward Kardinia Park?
4) Will the canteen operate?
5) Small donation has already been sent. Cheers!

Also careful with these copy and paste business.
On post #1 of this thread
Sat 12 October and Sun 13 October in "round times" need to be corrected to Sat 5 December and Sun 6 December!

Snipped out since problem was fixed.

^^ Good pickup ER - I've asked for these to be updated.

In response to your questions:

2) I'll need to confirm this with the Geelong team who are putting together the COVID Safe plan - the issue will be the density restriction on number of people allowed in the building at any one time.
If a game or two has already finished and players have already exited, then I couldn't see why a spectator wouldn't be allowed.
There have only been a handful of spectators in previous years.

3) The venue is St Mary's Community Hub at 192 Myers St.
Google maps link:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Volunteering+Geelong/@-38.1526756,144.3600136,15.5z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x5a4c2fc61e117aef!8m2!3d-38.153048!4d144.3633463

4) We traditionally don't have a canteen at the venue for this tournament (just tea, coffee & biscuits). There are plenty of food shops within a few blocks of the venue (local pubs, cafes, Subway, McDonalds, etc).

5) Thank you for your donation! :)

Hi all, there have been only 16 entries thus far so there is still scope for more entries.

No Name ACF Location

4. Anderson, Alistair 1765 Geelong

13. Smith, Jack 1482 Geelong
14. Brown, Greg 1325 Rosebud
15. Yates, Anna 831 Ballarat
16. Espinoza, Franco Ballarat

However, there are some regulars who we expect may still enter. So, if you intend to play then please advise via the emails listed on the form and in the original post of this thread and arrange for payment of entry fee to the nominated account. It could be a bit risky leaving a decision to enter and pay on Saturday since the maximum entry level might be reached by then. Entries will be accepted strictly in the order in which payment is received. Donít forget that a single half point bye is available in the first 4 rounds.

Please note the simple rules (one page) COVID Safe Plan for the tournament.
https://www.ballaratchess.com/events/2020/2020%20VCCC%20Covid%20Safe%20simple%20rules.pdf

Under the plan, there will be no shared food, shared drink, or shared cups/saucers are available. Ė it is all BYO.
Meals should not be consumed at your table but drinks are ok.

Spectators including partners and parents will only be able to enter the building if the maximum capacity of 28 has not been exceeded. Subject to weather conditions we are hoping to arrange some tables and chess equipment outside for analysis and friendly chess games.

The legendary Stewart Booth is not in the field!

I remember Dr Booth playing in 2014 (= 2nd with G. Gil) not sure if he's played since.
Last time he won the tournament was in 2011
And so missing in action (:D) is Carl Gorka who won the flag in 2017
Let's see if G. Gill wins it for the 3rd time.
My money on Kevin Perrin to win the Reserves!
Looks like weather in Geelong won't be kind to Melbourne visitors, so I will have to wait until 2021 to watch some games and have a picnic @ Buckley Falls.

Thanks Elliot & Michael,

Stewart actually competed as recently as 2018 - I haven't heard if he is coming this year.

19 players in total, and good to set Met as a spectator.

Sagagiri Goswami is the current leader, the only player to have won all their games.

Congratulations to Sagagari "Shaggy" Goswami, who is the 2020 Victorian Country Chess Champion.

He was a deserving champion, playing the top 5 seeds, and employing unusual gambits to compliment his attacking style of play.

Thank you to the Geelong Chess Club for organising a venue and sponsor at short notice, the VRCL for organising the event, Geelong Short Stays Accommodation for providing sponsorship to help keep the venue hire costs low, various helpers and to all the players and spectators for providing a "friendly" atmosphere to the event.

Great future in Victorian chess too, he's 24 (born 1996) that's unless there's someone else with same or similar name from India!

It is clear that after black gets pawn on f5 his position is bad. if he can be a couple of pawns up and 0.2 its pretty bad. Bxc6 is good too. Generally, black's position is strategically lost.

and the position after 10...f4 is looking even worse for black.
