I'll put my sneaky 2 bob on Garret. Have a fun weekend all, free from juniors!

Garret was a late withdrawal this morning as he was unwell. Allan Fossey, with wins over Jim Ritchie, Oleg Korenevski and Peter Cronin, is the only player on 3 out of 3 in the 2020 Qld Seniors. Tony Truscott and David Lovejoy are just half a point behind on 2.5/3. Then a big group of 8 players are on 2/3: last year's winner Tony Dowden, Peter Cronin, Mathew Juszczynski, John Myers, Tony Weller, Mark C Stokes, Bruce Harris and Jim Ritchie.

Here is the provisional draw for R4, starting at 9:30am on Sunday: 1. Allan Fossey 3/3 v David Lovejoy 2.5/3, 2. Tony Dowden 2/3 v Tony Truscott 2.5/3, 3. John Myers 2/3 v Peter Cronin 2/3, 4. Tony Weller 2/3 v Mathew Juszczynski 2/3, 5. Bruce Harris 2/3 v Mark C Stokes 2/3, 6. John Nothdurft 1.5/3 v Jim Ritchie 2/3, 7. Eddie Ottschoffski 1/3 v Oleg Korensvski 1.5/3, 8. Gail Young 1/3 v John Buciu 1/3, 9. Martin Carter 1/3 v Louay Al Zaher 1/3, 10. Ron Kuypers 0.5/3 v Rex Scarf 0/3, 11. Rob Joyce 0/3 v Tony Black 0.5/3. Don Hamilton on 1.5/3 and George Warta on 1.5/3 have both taken a half point bye in R4.

Allan Fossey and Tony Dowden both finished equal first on 5/6! Congratulations to both Allan and Tony! In 3rd place was John Myers on 4.5/6. Equal 4th were Tony Weller, Louay Al Zaher and John Buciu, all on 4/6. David Lovejoy and Tony Truscott were equal 7th on 3.5/6. Seven players were next, all equal 9th, with 3/6: Oleg Korenevski, Peter Cronin, Mark C Stokes, Bruce Harris, George Warta, Don Hamilton and Ron Kuypers. In 16th place was Jim Ritchie, scoring 2.5/6. Equal 17th were Mathew Juszyzynski, Tony Black and Rob Joyce, with 2/6. Equal 20th were Martin Carter and John Nothdurft with 1.5 points - John actually scored 1.5/3 and then withdrew. In equal 22nd place were Rex Scarf and Eddie Ottschoffski with 1 point each. It was a fun and most competitive tournament from round 1 to round 6!

Thanks Jonathan! Six titles :) [2013, 2014, 2017-2020].

This year's title felt the toughest by quite a margin - perhaps not entirely unrelated to turning 60 years old last week, and most certainly related to rustiness associated with a long layoff due to Covid. I was slow out of the stalls (have to get the Cup Day reference squeezed in) on day one with one win and a couple of uninspired draws. On day two I knew I had to win all my games and, to their credit, each of my opponents stretched me but in the end the fast time limit worked in my favour, as I still seem to be able to easily pick up the pace and blitz out moves when I need to.

I was very pleased Allan Fossey shared the title this year, as he has been my toughest opponent in recent in years but has had no luck in our individual encounters. Allan was the best Veteran player (over 65), so hopefully separate Senior (50+) and a Veteran (65+) titles will be recognised in due course.

Well done, so now one title for every decade of life. Happy belated decade birthday!

In view of the very welcome influx of the very young into chess tournaments in Queensland, the QWCL is thinking about lowering the entry age of this tournament to those having attained the age of twelve or greater by which time they will have devoted around half of their life to chess.

It's unusual for a tournament thread not to have a crosstable or games. For example, any of Tony's games featuring strong intuitive sacrifices for initiative?

Games being posted is the responsibility of the players if they so wish to share their games i don't find it unusual at all.

In terms of Cross Tables and standings etc. this is more common but may be technology constraints with arbiters or organisers.

I feel that many chess chat spectators expect a lot of organisers and arbiters that don't really have to provide anything at all to chesschat.

It's unusual for a tournament thread not to have a crosstable or games. For example, any of Tony's games featuring strong intuitive sacrifices for initiative? His game with Louay Al Zaher might qualify. It's very sharp, with both players being better at various points, so I've only provided brief annotations.
