We are underway with 24 players (capacity!) including one current and five former State Champions! The format is rounds 1-3 of the rapid, then the blitz, then rounds 4-6 of the rapid. Separate tournaments; final standings based on total score across the two. Great format!

Games are not rated and the mobile phone rule is not being enforced (other than not to answer during games.)

Really enjoyed the atmosphere of this small tournament and the food was really nice. Great to do something different and a fun experimental format.

Ranelagh (the hall over the road from General Store) is a possible venue for the Tas Rapid and Tas Lightning. Because of the Launceston Cup booking a date in early November, this could be in December. (All subject to confirmation, TCA approval etc).

My two losses today: Toby (I thought his counterplay was harmless and fell for a simple but devastating promotion swindle and went from a rook up to a rook down), Alastair (I forgot the theory in a line where I've forgotten theory before and got duly smashed). My win against Toby in the crucial rapid round 5 was an extremely difficult game - a Philidors where he had a kingside attack that persisted after I won a couple of pawns until I was eventually able to worm around it and win a piece. My win against Alastair in the blitz was difficult too - I trapped his rook and won the exchange but that just set off 20 moves of craziness where for a long time he seemed to have a perpetual but somehow I got out of it.

Andrew Martini had the day's most unusual win - he was down to the 2 second increment when his opponent lost by second illegal move by pushing a pawn to the 8th rank and failing to replace before pressing the clock.

Congratulations Tan, a great event. Amazing to see young players from the North of the state make their way down south to play, a long day for them. I would have benefited from playing you in a later round (you beat me in round 1), as I noticed you were distracted by both running the kitchen and playing chess.

Great performance. You got 1-1 to both second and third places. Also, this format is interesting and similar to St. Louis Rapid and Blitz.:)))

Thanks Chris. I lost on time twice today (nearly 3 as when playing Owen my clock downed to 2 seconds). But still not too bad as I were lucky in the game with Will and Chris as well. Patrick had a great game and I could do nothing rather than resign. Lol

I (black) reached this position against John Patrick and thought I was doing okay

2k4r/pp6/2pQp2p/5q2/2PR3P/8/Pr3PP1/3R2K1 w - - 0 1

But he played Rf4 and I replied Qg6 and I quickly lost. Apparently my best reply was Rb1 but still losing!
