With the passing of MCC's trial for its online Allegro now several weeks old, the format of the MCC Online Allegro is now becoming more and more settled.

Because of that, this thread will now serve as the ongoing place on Chesschat to find out developments and results for MCC's Online Allegro.

Remember to always click on the MCC's Allegro Webpage - http://www.melbournechessclub.org/events/the-saturday-allegro - to get the Tornelo link to the next Saturday Allegro (this will change every week), as well as instructions on how to enter, current entry fees and prizes.

Congratz! Mr. Baron. I was up in the middle of the night - Copenhagen time - and followed your last moves in the second round. Then I changed to Daniel P vs. Tony T.

Cool that MCC keeps organizing this tournament.

My experience I needed a lot of studying books in between plus game experience to progress from 1200 to possible giantkiller. If they could determine the opening (their favourite) they may have a chance. As a multiply winner of greatest upsets I never matched anyone nearly that high. So...?

This is the game....curious where i missed a win ( or was there a win in the first place?). given that opponent's rating and results in OTB events are 1200ish - truly amazing effort by white!

This is what i am thinking re improvement...someone warned me about him before we started...he also drew with David Cannon (2150 Fide)...he was winning against David...but then started drifting towards draw instead of playing for conversion of advantage ...so I was trying to play ''safely''...
I noted that he entered yet another allegro (coming saturday). Lets see what happens.

But when you see his strong rise from December to January (or Feb) what has happened since is consistent. December rises did co-incide with school holidays that MAY have been OTB and if so then the recent rises could be legit. He did the right thing with a champion and let you off with a draw that champions are always requesting when their head is held under water by a patzer. As a 1200 player if did have a similar player to yourself on the ropes in a major tourney and let him off only seeing 5 possibilities out of 6 - not wanting to get behind timewise and have to panic with later moves. So this 1200 could be credible.

Rise from 1200 to over 2000?
If a potential champion with a lot of free time then yes. I dont know his previous games but as I stated earlier he had a greater rise earlier that may have been OTB. Sorry can only give my own experience . At Sydney's then champion club I won the award for most improved rising from 0 to about 1500 points in one season. I had never played a rated game before that. In the club tournament I knocked off everyone except Fred Flatow. He played the Dutch that I never seen before but stated afterwards that I did not need to study it as I had played it so well. At my next club, a respectable club, I won the club championship. Many people told me that I was under rated. I was already fifty years by then. So a young very bright guy I imagine could kill my effort. When young and I had only read a fraction of a small book on openings I had an excellent record against top players in social and gambling games and I consider myself only about 3/4 smart. But it is the intensity one applies. Those last games mentioned was I was on holidays and my missus was working so I was playing 18 hours a day. As I stress in my chess lessons IT IS THE INTENSITY. after one game I can be too tired for 4 days.

I finally had a geek at that game. When he retreated his bishop maybe move 8 I thought he should have been a tempo behind (unless that was his planned move) that you should have been able to take advantage of? He has since lost to a 1700+ player but that is not necessarily the end all of it. Some players like myself really rise to the occasion when playing a champion, I try to make every move really tight. Like in snooker you block the holes as well as snookering. He could be the same. I did a giant killer job on a champion snooker player as well and I can't even hit a straight ball.

My Loss to Igor is very instructive. The analysis accurately highlights my mistakes. I must say the mistakes are rather typical of my play. Sacrificing the exchange was way better than defending passively. But I wanted to ''hold on'' rather than be material down.
Game against Cannon is instructive as well. I obviously saw the queen sacrifice coming, but could not be bothered to analyze the position arising afterwards. Would I think for 10 secs, I would pick Nh4 with a winning position. To sum up both games, I like being material up and dislike being material down way too much + lazy to work at the board.

I must say that overall - quality of Alexei's annotations (not just for my games but for all) is extremely high! It is a combination of excellent analysis + great explanations. So its suitable for players of all levels!

Re the game, both myself and Domagoi are obviously very flattered that we had our allegro game analyzed along with the Kasparov game :).
Re Qd3+ with a win. We were heading towards the time-trouble and I saw the move...but did not have the guts to play it. I saw that its better for black but was not sure (no time to calculate it) whether its a win or not and given that i was leading the tournament - took the draw. Great lesson for me to work harder at the board!

Is Daniel Mueller Australian? does he have a FIDE profile? His game versus Michael was alarmingly suspicious. A perfect game according to stockfish 10.

0-0-0 (inaccuracies, mistakes, blunders) 12cpl

https://lichess.org/aa5xrtqH#50

Tactics well beyond a 2000 player. So I am siding with Michael here, due to Muller having no background or proven results that match or even come close to this kind of performance.

Edit: His game versus Lillian Lu has GM level stats, hahahahahaah. 0-0-0 SEVEN cpl (Only Grand Masters get under 10 cpl)

https://lichess.org/uATiowEi#45

Game versus Ray Yang 0-0-0 also.

Hi, Daniel
Correct! I am rather disappointed though that I could not resist stockfish for longer :(. However, he did not get disqualified by MCC! Despite unclear identity (claimed he is Iranian who changed his name and NO rating).

Edit. Chess.com he would get disqualified after rd 4 latest.

The Sad part is, I was playing badly today and so were some other top player (Ray, David, Frank) but Lilian Lu and James Watson both played well above their usual level and if not for the cheater winning, one of them could have finished in top 2. in Case of Lilian, the way she was going before that game, she could have won the event!

Moderation Notice

The posts that were removed from this thread will now remain removed unless decided otherwise.

For legal reasons, as well as because some people seem to be underestimate how hard it sometimes is to prove computer cheating, no further claims of alleged computer-cheating (including in question form) regarding MCC events are to be made on the open board without moderator permission, unless they involve a player who has been banned over the matter and I have seen clear official evidence that this is the case.

Any discussion of this may occur in the Help and Feedback section only and is not to name any player(s) allegedly involved.

More posts removed because at least when taken together they would be read as insinuating that a player was cheating, and hence in breach of the above. One completely innocent post that followed on from those posts has also been removed.

If it continues, I will have to explore intermittently locking the thread or banning specific posters from posting on the thread. Posters are not to place this forum at legal risk on account of a defamatory hypothesis that they cannot prove and that one of them has had his facts wrong about.

This week's game review shows two aspects of the interaction between a human chess player and computer chess program:
1. What is the fast computer analysis, such as online sites (chess.com; lichess) use for giving the percentage of accuracy, anti-cheating protection, etc.? What is the real value of such analysis? From the other side, what is the information the potential cheater can get during the few seconds of using computer assistance?
2. What is the actual estimation of players' decisions during the game after deep analysis in tandem i.e. "computer + strong player?"

As a player has been removed from the results of three tournaments I have restored discussion that was removed from this thread. Some other discussion that was moved into the Coffee Lounge will remain there. The matter can now be discussed on the open board but if necessary cases of the player's claimed name posted on the main board may be edited out. If there is prolonged discussion on the main board I may move it to a new thread.

When I was younger, I used to trade on stock market. The current situation reminds me the following common phenomenon that I often observed. Everybody in the market expects some positive event to happen (for example Trump being reelected or not), and the market price gradually goes up as traders have higher and higher beliefs that something good will definitely happen. Suddenly when this event actually happens, the price drops significantly.:hmm:

So the MCC has managed to remove a player that many suspected and it looks like this is a great result for everybody. So now finally you are left on your own. Time to celebrate? But now everybody knows that Daniel (and I am sure not just him, as some other games where also suspicious) when he is unhappy with something can use computer assistance.:wall:

For those who are interested in ''playing through and analyzing'' Allegro games:
2 game suggestions. I think the games are quite interesting:
Morris-Baron
Very interesting struggle. I thought I was in trouble, then I thought I was doing OK....but at the critical point of the game...could not find a way to continue - may be 25...Nd4!? was a way to go?

Testoline-Baron
I played a very dubious opening (pawn hunting) but after I managed to give a piece for 3 pawns to activate the remaining pieces...missed a big opportunity (I think) on move 15 to gain clear advantage (you can find out what the move was...quite simple..its just that I was not reassessing the position before moving - good lesson for me)...after this quite complex...but I think OK for me.

When you exchanged you left his queen in a better position and as Desmond warned "watch your pawns".

If 25...Nd4!? was a way to go? - I can't see anything special afterwards.

James is quite new to playing on Tornelo and unlike lichess is does not give warning signals when time is about to run out.
My game against Yang was boring ...but a little bit dramatic for the players. I swapped a lot of pieces to go into opposite colour bishops + rook endgames to outplay my opponent from there..only to miss f3+ after this, converting the extra pawn was hard but in time trouble, my opponent allowed me to convert. Quite typical of rapid chess though.

Amazing play by James, I especially liked his slow play of the position, with subtle rook and Queen positional moves towards the end of the middle game, was a pleasure to play through!

It's amazing how the super strong players like James, you make 1 single innacuracy, and they absolutely drive that home, giving you nothing. Definitely move 25 by Michael was that game sealing mistake, de-centralising a piece for a vague threat at best.

If 25...Nd4!? was a way to go? - I can't see anything special afterwards.

The game in question:

1.c4 Nf6 2.d4 c5 3.d5 d6 4.Nc3 g6 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.g3 0-0 7.Bg2 Na6 8.0-0 Nc7 9.e4 a6 10.a4 b6 11.Re1 Bg4 12.h3 Bxf3 13.Qxf3 Rb8 14.Qd3 Nd7 15.Be3 Ne5 16.Qe2 e6 17.f4 exd5 18.fxe5 d4 19.exd6 Ne6 20.e5 dxc3 21.Bf2 cxb2 22.Rad1 Qd7 23.Qxb2 Qxa4 24.Bd5 Qd7 25.Qa2 Ng5 26.h4 Nh3+ 27.Kh2 Nxf2 28.Qxf2 Kh8 29.Qf4 b5 30.Rd2 b4 31.Rf2 b3 32.Bxf7 Qf5 33.Qxf5 gxf5 34.e6 b2 35.e7 b1=Q 36.Rxb1 Rxb1 37.d7 Rbb8 38.e8=Q 1-0

25...Nd4 doesn't work either, indeed in some lines white can sac the exchange for a pawn on d4 and then just basically run black out of moves. (Not immediately, white needs to play Kg2 first, but it's quite impressive entering moves into Stockfish and watching the evaluation spiral upwards.)

25...Rfe8 and 25...Kh8 seem to be the leading candidate moves but could be white is better anyway.

Not really. He could have got two knights for a rook and pawn in the variation added to the game below but that hardly seems to be winning.

I am yet to translate what you've written and understand the meaning :).

For most of my chess life I just played on instinct, being too busy etc to read books and chess was not my top priority. I played to get my pieces similar to how James' were to make a long, drawn out and complicated game that I then considered in my favour. I also considered that the blocked game was beneficial for my complicated knights whom I loved. I see that yours and James' Tornelo rating are similar but I guess that in classical games James would be ahead. That being the case I think the opening was in his favour. You were required to perform deep thinking that in the allegro format you were not ready for. But you being the pro maybe the deep thinking comes naturally to you. But for me playing black can be a long drawn out atrocious affair (Battle of Stalingrad) best avoided in short time limits against top players. A Battle of Normandy was necessary for the centre but you only played a Gallipoli. (sorry servicemen and women). (now why you see why chess students consider me the ultimate teacher - the mature aged ones love the analogies that have references to their life. Chess has to come alive and be relevant)

Again, I am having difficulties understanding your train of thought.
Out of this fairly long paragraph...I only understood a couple of lines. So responding to those:
in Allegro (just like in slow chess) James is rated well ahead of me. It is just that Tornelo ratings keep disappearing for players who do not play regularly.
2) Re you playing to get your pieces ''similar to how James does''...I have some doubts....but OK :)
As for the rest of what you've written - I need a translator :).

You only have to understand 3 words. 1st. Stalingrad - well due to your Russian background you are an expert.

Second word. Normandy was the biggest invasion in the history of the world so that is also self explanatory.

3rd word. And Gallipoli you have already argued on this board was a fizzer for Aussie diggers. And that was your effort in that game. I will try again.

You needed a Lleyton Hewitt effort 2 sets down marathon 5 setter comeback taking the whole arvo.

I advised you after a ten sec glimpse that n-d4 didn't rate and Stockfish agreed. See you next round.

It's amazing how the super strong players like James, you make 1 single innacuracy, and they absolutely drive that home, giving you nothing. Definitely move 25 by Michael was that game sealing mistake, de-centralising a piece for a vague threat at best.

His idea was correct... but just missed that white can defend the d6 pawn. Could still be playable if he played 28. Rbe8, qf4, b5. White can double rooks on e file to threaten e6 but by then you might even be able to play re6

^ thanks. I don't think Black's opening is entirely suitable for Allegro. It needs deep play and numerous moves.

Could Yang have done better against James trapped queen?

I looked at the game with an engine afterwards, I think 16... Bxf1 may have been a better try.

If White plays 17. Rxf1 dxc4 18. Bxc4 Qc7 19. Rb1 Na6 20. Qb7 Rb8 Black wins the Queen for the Rook and Bishop

However, 17. Bxf1 would be equal according to the engine.

I just wanted to try get an attack in because I thought I was doing worse.

Funny you should say that you thought you were worse because I thought I was too greedy with Qb3 in the opening and was about to get punished for it...

I was planning on Bxf1 but at no stage was I confident in my position until we got that ending, where I thought I was better originally with the passed pawns but my king is too weak

And then I forgot about the clock...

Now you are bringing up my next regret - refusing Mr Purdy a game in maybe 1979. By the way it was GM Rogers who recommends that white pawn response e5 - but I had already played it in 1972 with my first defeat of a champion. It was when I was supposed to be on my honeymoon.

Indeed excellent job by Alexei. In this edition it's really heart warming to see the young masters Ari and Eugene exhibiting their knowledge on a trap line first used almost 120 years ago!

That was certainly good advice and well taken.

I am wondering if it is possible to watch opponents twitch while playing. Daniel, Frank, Ray and probably some others are all twitching....so thinking if I should subscribe to all and start watching while playing them :).

The game against Ari. And looks like I was in trouble in the opening. I was worried about 11.Bxf6 and 12 Qc2...but then I thought i can try 12...Nb4!? dropping pawn on h7 but locking up the bishop with g6.

Also 15. Nc3 would leave white with a solid edge.

I give you permission to watch my stream while playing, but viewer discretion is advised, If I drop more than 2 games, my morale usually sinks to the bottom of the Atlantic, and the swearing progressively gets worse.

I would assume that watching someone's stream WHILE you play them is at the very least unethical. Not sure how it's different to having an openings book open if the player you're watching is about to tell you what he's calculating and what to watch out for in the position lol.

That being said... if you want to subscribe, I'm happy for you to watch while we play :D

I agree that watching someone's stream while playing against them is unethical, because of the reasons Frank outlines.

However, I'm also unsure about the fairness of streaming itself. In an actual chess game, you won't be saying your moves out loud. I'm unsure if saying the moves out loud will give you an unfair advantage (might help you work out complicated lines) or distract you (I feel like it distracts me), can anyone who studied psychology or something related confirm? There's also the possibility of Twitch chat pointing out moves or ideas you haven't considered (a solution is to just not look at chat). Also I like listening to music while playing chess online, and I think most streamers have music playing in the background while streaming, I'm not sure if this is allowed in Allegro (I'll stop if it's deemed unfair).

The questions regarding saying moves out loud, and listening to music obviously apply for non-streaming allegro players as well, there's nothing stopping people from doing said things. I guess these are just features of online chess. Ultimately, I think even if these do provide an advantage, the advantages are negligible because chess is a game which requires raw skills to win.

Feel free to point out any mistakes/assumptions I made! (Also some shameless advertising :D, Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/rayyang1/about)

You can put the chat into emote only mode to ensure no one is able to suggest moves.

I usually perform a lot better when I’m talking to myself. It’s not assistance from an outside source and your opponent can do the same, so I think it’s perfectly fair. Music has never been helpful for me, usually I become too focused on the game to really notice it. But I think it could give people an advantage by provoking certain emotions. These advantages aren’t so small and can definitely change the result, but there’s not much comparison to red bull or coffee which are both allowed in serious tournaments and affect play a lot more.

I was not even thinking in terms of gaining advantage :).

I think both ''live commentary by players'' and ''other players watching them and listening'' - should obviously not be allowed during online tournaments....but I do not see online play as that serious...so I think both are fun....so would not mind listening...and commenting as well to add more fun.

Re how serious online play is...look at the Online Ollympiad...ended up in a mess ...that they are trying to make look good :).

I have deleted a link to a stream because the poster failed to warn users that the stream contained strong swearing.

Today's allegro results!
Total domination by James, while other top players did not play well. Also, outstanding performance by a new junior player competently outplaying me and getting close to beating Ari Dale (Ari escaped with a draw).

I saw Melamed play in the 2020 Aus Blitz where he was at one stage one of the leaders and finished up performing at about 2000 despite fading at the end, one to watch.

i think it goes way back to 3. ...Bf5, 3...Bg4 instead would have been a lot more aggressive and eventually help control the e file with assistance of R e1 and exchanging of pawns. Being Fathers' Day this is a free consultation.
