The 2020 Tasmanian Championships are scheduled for March 7-9 at the YMCA in Kings Meadows, Launceston. Here's the link to the registration page on the TCA website:

2020 Tasmanian Championships (https://tasmanianchessassociation.squarespace.com/tournaments-enter/2020/03/07/tasmanian-championships)

In addition to the usual payment methods, the TCA is now able to process credit card payments on the day. I hope to see you there!

Players wanting to play and needing accommodation? Please PM me to discuss airbnb options. I'll be exploring these in the next day or so - looking for about $70-$75 per player per night - so please don't delay. Thanks. Denis

I submitted my entry a few minutes ago. The page told me that the entry was registered but when I clicked the link to go to the payment screen it claimed there was an error.

This is most likely not a problem, as I had opted to pay by direct transfer - I clicked the link because there was at one stage a requirement that even using direct transfer or pay on the day you had to checkout with zero payment to complete your entry.

I expect it's all OK but if there is any problem with the entry or payment (which I also entered today) can someone let me know at some point (not urgent).

Adjustments for players with Quick ratings but not normal ratings

Last year I used an adjustment of 180 points to convert ACF Quick ratings for seedings purposes where the player had no ACF Classic rating.

With the release of the March ratings list I have recalculated this adjustment and it is now 265 points. This is the current average difference between a Tasmania player's ACF Quick and Classic ratings where the player is active on both lists.

I am looking forward to this, once I retire and become a Lonnie resident - in 5 years or sooner. Or I might pop over next year, instead of a Ballarat trip ;-). Is the event rotated between Launceston and Hobart, or elsewhere?

Currently the Tasmanian Championships is always held in Launceston. The Tasmanian Open alternates between Burnie and Hobart, as does the Tasmanian Rapid and Lightning weekend.

A very interesting situation.
Would the penultimate and final rounds produce
an all out aggressive struggle?
or
a peaceful = first b/n two or three players?

oh btw I enjoyed the slaying of the Accelerated Dragon in board one (R5) :D :P

I wish there was a way to watch the fight in board 3 tomorrow morning, it will definitely be a boots and all, no holds barred affair!

Waiting eagerly for results.

My round 6 game against Owen Swan... won in 8 moves with the Englund Gambit :
1. d4 e5 2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nf3 Qe7 4. Qd5 b6 5. Bg5 Qb4+ 6. Nbd2 Qxb2 7. Rd1 Nb4 8.Qxa8 Nxc2# 0-1
Hopefully I've inserted the game properly - I just put the PGN text in pgn tags.
Edit: I *didn't* insert it properly, hopefully it should be fixed now

Thanks all for the congrats!

Congratulations, Kevin!
Great finish after drawing against 1200 in rd1.

Chris managed to predict that I would play the English and I then played into something like 11 moves of his home preparation including the unusual move ...a5. I got nothing out of the opening and lashed out with a rubbish piece sac.

Also, amazing result for someone rated U1200 to finish 2nd equal at state champs!

John is 14 and this was a breakthrough tournament for him. 19.Rg4!! against Chris and his games against Ian and Eddy today were on a way higher level than his past rating.

I wish Tony Sturges (who the Sturges Memorial is named after) had been alive to see this. He loved odd gambits like the Englund and if he saw someone win with the Englund with a smother in 8 moves he would have been talking about it decades later.

I still am as well. One of my school team pupils whom I had just taught the game did a smother mate in her first competition game would you believe. She is now a doctor. Her opponent refused to shake hands. I had taught her the smother.

Congratulations on your win.

Kevin's win was a talking point on the ABC Statewide Mornings programme this morning, with Leon Compton suggesting to Helen Shield that Tasmania's apex psephologist and snail expert would be the perfect dinner companion for any group wanting conversation dominated by chess, politics and snails.

Kevin will be Helen's guest on her afternoon programme this afternoon.

Congratulations to Dr. Kevin Bonham for yet another Tassie flag (was it the 11th or 12th? I have lost count)!
I am sure, however that his record of shared championships (7) must be an undisputed first in Australia if not in the world (I will do some research on it)!

Thanks. I think the all-time score between us for classic games is +3=9-3 but I've had white in every game but one. Also at least two draws in rapids.

Ta! This is my sixth Tasmanian Championship title (two shared). The one I have won more often that you are probably thinking of is the Tasmanian Open (11 with 7 shared). The Open is not a Championship.

Hey, does anyone know where I can get the complete recorded games in this tournament? Thanks

Ian Little is doing a great job entering them in (he was doing a lot of this through the weekend) and one of us will announce here when they are available - I expect they will be hosted on the Tasmanian Chess Association website; don't know how long it will take. Some players were also helping by entering in their games. It's quite a daunting task entering them all in because of legibility issues, scoring errors and in at least one case on one of the lowest boards an undetected illegal move.

No, this coming summer is an Open summer not a Champs summer.

and in at least one case on one of the lowest boards an undetected illegal move.

Yes, in my second round, my opponent illegally castled after moving his king, which I didn't notice as I wasn't watching him move. (this sort of illegal move is probably impossible to record in PGN notation)

But he would have [as a State Champion, per ACF By-Law No. 1, 3 (f)] if the coming summer were a Championship summer.

I've been trying to find out if there has been a shorter decisive game in Tas Champs history than 8 moves. There have been quite a lot of shorter draws, including in 1984 when the last round saw 1.c4 1/2-1/2 on top board and also a 3 move draw, and possibly even 1.h4 1/2-1/2 as well. In 1993 Brad Stansfield tied for the title by beating Mike Stubbs who was half a point ahead of him in nine moves. Not sure if there were any scholar's mates last year when some of the juniors playing were (at the time) unusually weak for this event.

Coincidentally in round 1 of this very tournament, I apparently decided to make my blunders early in the game and lost to Will Rumley in 8 moves. (I really need to have a look at this opening - I played like a complete patzer). So I had probably my shortest win and my shortest loss in the same tournament!

To be honest, I'm extremely excited to analyse my game with Ian Rout when they are published. I put my game with Chris Shepherd through the engine, and although it's not completely accurate I must say that I can take at least a small bit of pride in it.

Not the Tas Champs obviously but didn't the Burnie Shines 2015 feature a game between R.Horton and Markovitz that ended in 7-8 moves?
EDIT: 2012 and it was checkmate by black in 9 moves!

Yes it does, among many other options, provided black is careful. 32.Rc7 leads to a hopeless position with 4P vs R+P so the only real swindle attempt is 32.Re7 hoping for ...Nc1?? (...Bc1 wins) when 33.f7 draws.
