Tony Dowden is in form too - he has just won the CAQ Veterans Chess Championship ... You are too kind Mark!

... Will he also win The Christmas Weekender? I haven't won two events in row since moving up from Tasmania, so I have my doubts!

People are usually spending all their time wrapping presents at this time of year, so it will be a challenge to play chess simultaneously.

Plenty of great games and big upsets today! 9am start tomorrow.Looks like a great event. Connor McCartney played in the BCC Club Championship; he didn't win, but his performance there and in this event (defeating two titled players in a row!) show he's definitely stronger than 1300.

Indeed.

But no aircon in mid-summer in Brisbane is very uncool (and doesn't it contravene ACF's guidelines for conditions?). Personally I was completely unable to handle the stiffling heat & humidity and had to withdraw. Sorry, but it needed to be said.

Addendum: I've just been messaged that a QCF official recorded 36C inside the playing hall on Saturday!

Indeed.

I'm unaware of there being any, beyond that bidders for ACF title events (which this isn't) are required to advise whether there is air conditioning as part of their bids.

Some state associations will have such conditions, eg the TCA requires holders of TCA events to implement "adequate climate control (heating and cooling)".

I have a similar problem with playing when it is too hot, even when it is nowhere near 36.

Only FIDE rated tournaments are required to have air-con. Most schools in Queensland do not have this as standard (thank you Queensland government who seem to be reneging on their promise to provide aircon at more schools). At least the venue accommodated 95 players and their entourage better than the Brenan Pavillion at Churchies where the Queensland Open was staged.

I found the playing conditions quite comfortable,it couldn't have been 36 deg,the hall has a very high roof and big fans,it is summer and you expect it to be warm, but I didn't raise a sweat at all.

Thanks for the clarification KB. I did read something somewhere (where??) about requirements for air-con for chess events in hot conditions - I looked it up after a Melbourne event one year in November where there was no air-con and I nearly melted - but apparently not ACF?

I found the playing conditions quite comfortable,it couldn't have been 36 deg,the hall has a very high roof and big fans,it is summer and you expect it to be warm, but I didn't raise a sweat at all.
Doesn't sound like the same event, so maybe you have your wires crossed?

Only FIDE rated tournaments are required to have air-con. Most schools in Queensland do not have this as standard (thank you Queensland government who seem to be reneging on their promise to provide aircon at more schools). At least the venue accommodated 95 players and their entourage better than the Brenan Pavillion at Churchies where the Queensland Open was staged.

One teacher told me a number of years ago that her school admins (who had aircon for themselves) forbade her from bringing even a portable aircon to her classroom. Typical socialists: they prefer equality of misery to inequality of happiness.

The Australian Junior in Adelaide in Jan 1981 was played in very hot conditions, especially for someone living in Wellington, where 23°C was considered a hot day.

36°C (~97°F to the Yanks) is just unreasonable; I don't blame Tony for withdrawing.

I don't know how many places the one tournament was run,but I was at the tournament at Buranda sports hall last weekend.it just shows people react differently to circumstances,as stated earlier I didn't have any problems with the heat.

I know that there was a venue change a couple of weeks out due to the increased numbers expected for the event so that may have contributed.

I think it's great to see so many players having a chance to play a tournament around this time of year where traditionally there have not been many ACF Classic rated events being held.

I'm sure that Alex will be happy to work on the feedback from this year's event seeing how successful it was and work towards next year - hopefully he will run another Christmas event again next year!

It's good to see such a big turnout.

All the same, the fans might not help if all they do is recirculate air at 36°C. If the atmosphere is dry, then they can accelerate evaporative cooling, but not if the air is already humid.

There is also the issue of acclimatization. When I first moved to Brizzie from Wellington, I found the weather very hot. But after a few years, I would be wearing longs in the relatively cooler months and see visitors wearing shorts.

Hi All,

I hope everyone had a safe and merry Xmas! I appreciate the feedback and I will work on improving for future events. I understand QLD weather is very hot and I will take this all in stride, as I have only ever acted in the best interest of the chess community. Providing opportunities for chess in Australia to thrive and grow is my greatest mission!

Due to the large turnout, I had to secure a bigger space and Buranda State School was the best available. There was a lot of work that went into all of this, so please consider the great lengths it takes to run and organise such an event. I had plenty of inquiry’s about air con and was always honest with those and mentioned that there’s two industrial fans and bottled water. From the 95 participants, I have heard one formal complaint about the heat. Nevertheless, if there is anything further I can do to help, please let me know. If anyone wishes to discuss this further, please email me at alexstahnke@topchess.com.au. I will no longer be responding to this thread.

Until next time, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Cheers, Alex.

Hi All,

I consider this event to be one of the great initiatives of the year for Queensland chess, striking out boldly where no other entrepreneur has been before and obviously meeting a need that has not been met before with its magnificent 95 participant turn-out on the eve of Christmas.

It's much easier and risk-free to promote the 50th-anniversary event than the inaugural one, all parties benefit and no one loses.

"Hasta la vista."

Most schools have at least the libraries air-conditioned, in my experience.

This issue was previously raised at a CAQ Council meeting, where there was a proposal to make air-conditioning compulsory for all venues, but I don't know if it ever passed.

Fans will help with humidity, as they'll promote evaporation of sweat and therefore cooling - as long as it isn't too hot or too humid. But they'll do nothing if the problem is the temperature rather than the humidity. In this case, I suspect that it's both, when air-conditioning would be the only real solution. Although an evaporative cooler might help - much cheaper than air-conditioning.

But I just said:

You don't have to disagree with everything I post. You might want to find out first if you really disagree in the first place.

Sometimes if the air is hot, opening a car window feels like opening an oven door. There is a reason why convection ovens have advantages. So if it were too humid for evaporative cooling, the fans could be counterproductive. They could have a place if the inside were warmer than the outside because of all the live human bodies, if they drew hot air upwards rather than blew it back down.

And with global heating, it will get worse and worse in Brisbane (as I've already explained to you elsewhere).

If the humidity is so high that sweat won't evaporate, then you definitely won't be playing chess because you'll be dead! So fans will always be useful, no matter how high the humidity. But with high humidity, evaporative coolers won't be very effective in cooling the room. However they would still be better than nothing.

Being sensitive to humidity myself, I certainly sympathise with Tony. But it was really just bad luck that the event coincided with some of the most unpleasant weather we've had in Brisbane for a while. If the event had been this weekend, for example, there would have been no issue at all.

Not that I need any explanation from you on topics involving physics and chemistry.

Come off it. Steam rooms are hotter than that, 43–45°C. Not that I would want to stay in one for longer than 15 minutes at a time.

I would have also found it highly unpleasant.

Here in Atlanta, it is quite warm for winter, but it was around freezing a few weekends ago.
