Tony Dowden won for the third time in a row with 5/6 ! He had a half point bye for R4, drew with Mark C Stokes in R5 and defeated Allan Fossey in R6. In outright second was John Nothdurft. He went through undefeated and scored 4.5/6. Third place was shared three ways by Allan Fossey, David Lovejoy and Mark C Stokes, all on 4/6. Tony Dowden will put up a couple of his interesting games on Chesschat in the next few days!

Here are games against two wily opponents who historically have given me some trouble. A fun queenless middle game against Michael Cashman in Round 3 and an enjoyable attack against Allan Fossey in Round 6.

T. Dowden (2147) - M. Cashman (1826)
1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.0-0 Be7 (6...Nb6) 7.d4 exd4 8.Nxd4 Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Nb4 10.Qxd8+!? (I remembered that 10.Qxg7 is 'book' but no more than that and I didn't want to sac early material with the quick time control) 10...Bxd8 11.Nc3 0-0 12.Rd1 c6 13.Bf4 Be7 14.a3 Na6 15.b4 Bf6 16.Rac1 Be7 17.b5 Bxa3 18.bxa6 Bxc1 19.Rxc1 (White has a winning bind) 19...Re8 20.Rd1 f6 21.Na4 g5 22.Be3 Re7 23.Bc5 Rxe2 24.Bf3 Re8 25.Bh5 Re4 26.Rd8+ and mate 1-0

T. Dowden (2147) - A. Fossey (1701)
1.c4 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.Nc3 d6 5.e4 e5 6.Nge2 Nc6 7.d3 0-0 8.0-0 Bd7 9.h3 Qc8 10.Kh2 a5?! (Black commences a queenside incursion but this is too slow. White is allowed to build an attack without interruption) 11.Be3 b612.Qd2 Re8 13.Rae1 a4 14.f4 a3 15.b3 Rf8 16.Rf2 Nd4 17.Ref1 Ne8 18.Nd5 Qd8 19.f5 Nxe2 20.f6!? Nd4 21.Bg5! Nxf6 22.Rxf6? Ne6? 23.Rxe6 Bh6 24.Bxh6 Bxe6 25.Bxf8 1-0

Thanks to the Queensland Women's Chess League and Mark Stokes for respectively organising and running a very enjoyable event.

Chris Belton kindly provided me with the game where he gave Tony Dowden a big fright after 18 ... Bf8 by Dowden! It was R2 and a Chris win would have opened up the whole tournament for the rest of the field! Unfortunately, at move 24, with Chris having 38 minutes compared to Dowden's 8 minutes, he suffered dizziness due to success and Dowden snatches victory from the jaws of defeat!

Move 26 is the problem - gives black open lines allowing for the queen to become overloaded. If 26.Nb2 white is still winning.

Tony Dowden
22-11-2019, 10:32 PM
Yes, you are right KB, 26.Nb2 is good enough. After losing the thread and blundering horribly (rustiness and older age is a vicious combination) I thought about resigning on move 19 but then I realised 21...Na4 had the potential to give me a little bit of play. Note that we played a few more moves than you give above: 33.Rf2 Qxe5 34.Nd3 Rxd3 35.Qxd3 Qe1+ 0-1

Thanks to various people for your kind congrats. TBH, I didn't feel I played very consistently or accurately but at least I avoided passive or wimpy play which I had promised myself not to do beforehand.

In round 6, an incorrect result was recorded in the Rex Scarf v Peter Cronin game. Peter won in fact. The correct file has now been sent to the Ratings Officer. Thank to Tony Dowden for putting up some of his games too! He has now won The Veterans 3 times in a row and 5 times in total
