The cc:d emails I get from the TCA website, or other indicators, give the following as entries so far (I'll edit the list as more appear):

John Patrick - rapid only, paid
Thomas Powell-Davies - both
David Escobar - both
Ian Rout - rapid
Thomas Hartwell - rapid only
James Fletcher - unsure which
Reg Harvey - both
Denis McMahon - both
James Peirce - rapid
Will Rumley - both, paid
Kerry Beeton - both
Luwanna Beeton - both
Bayani Beeton - both
Toby Straton - both
Kevin Bonham - both, paid
Addison Djatschenko - both, paid
Monty Brown - both

expected: Dylan Kuzmic - lightning

There's an issue with the emails coming through the TCA site as Tasmanian Open entries meaning that I don't know which of the tournaments they are for, but if I get two from the same player I think it's safe to assume they are playing in both.

The above is unofficial, not necessarily reliable, and for information purposes only; I am not involved in organising the event.

I am hoping to play but not yet able to confirm because of a commitment that might prevent me from travelling up (not sure yet). Sometime between tomorrow night and Friday I will know for sure whether I can play, but I'm not sure when that will be just yet.

I'll be playing but haven't officially entered yet. James Peirce is a probable (based on my chat with him this afternoon) - i think he needs to play an event before the next ratings list; the Beetons are possibles at this stage.

I've entered for the Rapid, looking forward to donating some rating points i shouldn't have

Decent number of entries now, updated in post 2.

I'm OK to play now, and Toby is also in. 16 for the weekend now.

I believe that Dylan and Nigel will be playing.

I believe that Dylan and Nigel will be playing.

That would mean there'll be 7 of the top 11 on the Tasmanian quick list, including 4 of the top 5. Plus the defending Lightning champion.

Looking at the entries so far this would have to have the lowest average age of a Tasmanian tournament in a while surely?

I haven't checked, but possibly since late last decade for a title event. Late last decade there were some Tas Championships that had a very high proportion of juniors.

I believe that Dylan and Nigel will be playing.Unfortunately I was wrong. Nigel can't play, and Dylan can only play the Lightning.

Thomas Hartwell may be unable to play the Lightning. Rhian Shee has entered for both events.

James Peirce

I'm really scared now, about half of the top 10-15 juniors in Tassie are playing!
Hopefully i can keep my rating above 1800

Couple of results against rating and nearly a third as Luwanna was a piece up against Will, which became a pawn up in a rook ending that was tricky for a while before Will got the better of it.

Will's game looked like being a reverse of his first as he was piece for pawn up, then ended up in a dicey rook ending that turned into a (we think) lost pawn ending. Toby offered a draw which Will declined but then Toby blundered and Will triumphed!

My games so far
Round 1
John Patrick vs James Peirce
https://lichess.org/d9RnE16g/black
Computer shows that we were both wrong about the sac drawing :)
Round 2
https://lichess.org/Jdn9Yh3i/black
James Peirce vs Denis McMahon
I claim this was a super Swiss Gambit :)
Round 3
Monty Brown vs James Peirce
https://lichess.org/XaT12vTi
Round 4
James Peirce vs Kerry Beeton
I got my recording wrong but i managed to just avoid a Rvs R+B with all the pawns on one side and managed to get a rook exchange
https://lichess.org/Nwin3Vw1/black
And i'm playing Will tomorrow, fantastic :(

Will Rumley has proved his historic win of the Tasmanian Lightning Championships last year (the youngest ever winner) was no fluke by winning it again! He had some luck as he was lost against Kerry Beeton in round 7.

Round 5 vs William Rumley
https://lichess.org/Ba1yfyqp
In the mass exchanges we both went astray but managed to come out of it fairly even until William blundered
Round 6 vs Ian Rout
https://lichess.org/BOUk6GSu
Neither side went wrong anywhere and neither could do anything
Round 7 vs Kevin Bonham
https://lichess.org/QmCuK1KE
I missed 9. Nb5 allowing me to recapture without getting the doubled and isolated B pawns that were ultimately my undoing, 27 Rxc8 instead of Ra1 is evaluated by the computer as dead even though black has an edge.

Cool game against Dennis in the last round of the rapids

https://lichess.org/6cv3CmJF#67

It was a fun game - and sorry I didn't score it - but at the end I thought your rook was on a4. Nd8 would obviously have been met by R x N. Can you remember? I can't. Still: it has to be a major achievement to get a draw when the computer had me at -12.2 at one point!

EDIT: Maybe instead of R(g)f8, you played Ra4 - with the idea that if I play Ne5+ then Harry the h pawn will fall. After Nd8 it's definitely drawn though, since if Black goes to the back rank, then Nc5 and White is actually winning.

Peirce - Bonham is above, and I think lichess is wrong about 19...Rxc7 being better than 19...Kd8 and that both moves are objectively 0.0. Four of my other games below.

Djatschenko - Bonham rd 2. I think this is quite positionally instructive. Sometimes knights are happy to be kicked.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Bd3 dxe4 4.Bxe4 Nf6 5.Bd3 c5 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.dxc5 Bxc5 8.0-0 0-0 9.a3 b6 10.Nc3 Bb7 11.b4 Be7 12.b5?! This pawn is overextended and this will cause white big problems later. The move is also an error because it gives black an outpost on c5. 12...Nb8 [Computer likes 12...Na5] 13.Ng5 Nbd7 14.Nge4 Nxe4 15.Nxe4 Ne5 16.Bb2 Nxd3 17.Qxd3 [I did suggest 17.cxd3 keeping queens on and playing for an attack as with queens off black's positional advantage is much too much though after 17...f5 18.Nc3 Rf6 it is actually white who comes under attack] 17...Qxd3 18.cxd3 Rfd8 19.Rad1 Rd7 20.Ng3 Rad8 21.d4 Bf6 22.Ne2 h6 23.Rd2 Bd5 24.Rfd1 Bc4 25.Nc3 Bg5 26.Ne4 [26.Rc2 Bb3] 26...Bxd2 27.Nxd2 Bxb5 28.Rb1 Bd3 29.Rd1 Ba6 30.Nf3 Be2 31.Rd2 Bxf3 32.gxf3 e5 33.d5 Rxd5 34.Re2 Rd2 35.Rxd2 Rxd2 36.Bxe5 Rd3 37.Kg2 Rxa3 38.Bb8 a5 39.Bc7 b5 40.Kg3 a4 41.h4 Rc3 42.Ba5 Rc4 43.f4 a3 44.Kg4 a2 45.f3 g6 46.Kg3 a1=Q 47.Bd2 Qg1+ 48.Kh3 Rc2 49.f5 Rxd2 50.fxg6 Rh2# 0-1

Bonham - Rout rd 4. I missed one chance to stay a pawn up near the end; doubt it would have won though.

1.Nf3 c5 2.g3 d5 3.Bg2 Nc6 4.d4 Nf6 5.0-0 e6 6.c4 dxc4 7.Qa4 Be7 8.dxc5 0-0 9.Qxc4 Qa5 10.Bg5 [10.a3] 10...Qxc5 11.Qxc5 Bxc5 12.Nc3 Bd7 13.Rac1 Be7 14.Rfd1 Rfd8 15.a3 h6 16.Bf4 Be8 17.b4 Rxd1+ 18.Nxd1 Nd5 19.Bd2 a6 20.Nc3 Nxc3 21.Bxc3 Rd8 22.Ne5 Nxe5 23.Bxe5 b6 24.Bc7 Rd2 25.Bxb6 Bb5 26.e3 Ra2 27.Bf1 [27.Bd4! covering against back rank check in the line 27...Rxa3 (27...Bd3 28.Rc8+ Kh7 29.Rc7 Bf6 30.Bxf6 gxf6 31.h3 white will be a pawn up but it does not look at all easy to win.) 28.Rc8+ Kh7 29.Rc7] 27...Rxa3 28.Bxb5 axb5 29.Rc8+ Kh7 30.Bc5 Rc3 31.Kf1 Rc4 32.Rc7 Bxc5 33.bxc5 b4 34.Rb7 [34.Rxf7 eg 34...Rxc5 35.Rb7 Rc4 36.Rb6 e5 will be drawn] 1/2-1/2

Harvey - Bonham rd 5. This game had to be stopped for a while on move 3 because I had to deal with an incident as arbiter. When we resumed I had no idea what was going on after 4.Ne5 and immediately made a mistake but at least I wasn't in serious trouble and my king got to have a lot of fun later on (as it also did in round 7).

1.f4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3 c5 4.Ne5 Nc6 Probably not one of the best half a dozen moves in this position. 5.Bb5 Qc7 6.c4 a6 7.Qa4 Bd7 8.Nxd7 Kxd7 [8...Qxd7 9.cxd5 Nxd5 10.Bxc6 bxc6] 9.Nc3 e6 10.f5 Bd6 11.Bxc6+ Qxc6 12.fxe6+ fxe6 13.cxd5 exd5 14.0-0 Qxa4 15.Nxa4 Kc6 16.d4 c4 17.Nc3 b5 [17...Rhe8] 18.Bd2 Rae8 19.a3 Rhf8 20.Rae1 Ng4 21.g3 a5 22.Nd1 [Black will probably win after 22.e4 but it isn't simple, eg 22...Rxf1+ 23.Kxf1 (23.Rxf1 dxe4 is winning for black) 23...Rf8+ 24.Kg1 Nxh2 25.exd5+ Kd7 26.Kg2 Nf3 27.Re2 b4 28.Na4 Nxd2 29.Rxd2 bxa3 30.bxa3 Rb8] 22...b4 23.Kg2 Nf6 [Missing a neat win after 23...Rxf1 24.Rxf1 c3] 24.Rf3 Ne4 25.Bc1 Rxf3 26.Kxf3 Rf8+ 27.Kg2 bxa3 28.bxa3 Kb5 29.Nb2 Touchmove error but white is lost anyway 29...Bxa3 30.Nd3 Bxc1 31.Nxc1 a4 32.Re2 c3 33.Nd3 Kc4 34.Ne5+ Kb3 35.Nc6 c2 36.Na5+ Kc3 37.Re1 Kd2 38.Ra1 Kxe3 39.Nc6 Kd2 40.Ra2 Kd1 41.Nb4 c1=Q 42.Nd3 Qd2+ 43.Rxd2+ Kxd2 44.Nb4 a3 0-1

Bonham - McMahon Rd 6. I missed many chances to make better use of an advantage through this game and around move 40 Denis reached a level position but he was much shorter on time than me and it was still complicated.

1.c4 d6 2.g3 e5 3.Bg2 f5 4.d3 Nf6 5.Nc3 c6 6.Nf3 Be7 7.0-0 Nbd7 8.Nd2 Qc7 9.b4 Nf8 10.b5 h6 11.f4 Qb6+ 12.Kh1 Ng4 On the surface unpleasant but this is actually harmless. 13.bxc6! bxc6 [13...Ne3 14.Qa4 and black can resign] 14.Na4 [Not the best, eg 14.fxe5 dxe5 15.c5 Qxc5 16.Nc4 with overwhelming compensation] 14...Qc7 15.Nb3 Rb8 16.h3 [16.e4 fxe4 17.fxe5 Nxe5 18.Bxe4 black is struggling] 16...Nf6 17.Nc3 Bd7 18.e4 g6 19.Kh2 [19.fxe5 dxe5 20.d4 an idea which I looked at and then forgot about] 19...N8h7 20.fxe5 dxe5 21.Be3 Ng5 22.Nc5 Qa5 23.Nxd7 Nxd7 24.Bd2 [24.Rc1] 24...Bb4 25.Nb1 0-0 26.exf5 Bxd2 27.Qxd2 Qxd2 28.Nxd2 Rb2 29.Nb3 gxf5 30.h4 Ne6 31.Kg1 Nb8 32.Rf2 [32.Rae1] 32...Rxf2 33.Kxf2 f4 34.Bh3 Nd4 35.Nxd4 fxg3+ 36.Kxg3 exd4 37.Re1 Na6 38.Re6 [38.Re5 Nb4 39.Bf5 Nxa2 40.Kg4] 38...Nb4 39.Rxh6 Kg7 40.Rd6 c5 41.Rd7+ Kf6 42.Bf1 Rg8+ [42...Ke5] 43.Kf3 Rg1 44.Be2 Ra1? 45.Rxa7 Rxa2 46.Rxa2 Nxa2 47.Kg4 Nc3 48.Bf1 Nd1 49.Kf4 Ne3 50.Bh3 Kg6 51.Bg4 Kh6 I don't have the remaining moves but I won by getting my king to c5 and abandoning the h-pawn, black played Nxc4 but I was able to give up my bishop for his last pawn and win KP vs K 1-0

You also need to befriend me on Facebook (Toby Straton) so I can send you the secret password :)

It's a lot of fun, playing people we know. The time limit is 10mins with no increment but there's an option to halve your own time for double the points.

Look forward to hearing from you

Thanks to the players who scored their Rapid Games. I've made a small database of the ones I've seen so far -

TAS RAPID (http://view.chessbase.com/cbreader/2019/8/19/Game429240093.html)

If anyone else is able to upload their games here or post a link, I'll add them to it.

Honour Boards have been updated and the crosstables uploaded to the TCA (https://tasmanianchessassociation.squarespace.com/home/) website. I'd like to add the database to that report sometime next week.

On another note: Kerry Beeton is actively sourcing venues for the 2019 Launceston Cup. I don't have many details, but it's likely to also be run as a 7 round Rapid event in middle November. I'll keep you posted.

I don't understand the note to move B24:

Blunder. Best move was Nh3+.
24...Nh3+ 25.Kh1 Nhf2+ 26.Kg1 Bxb2 27.Rb1 Nh3+ 28.Kh1 Qxb3 29.Rxb3 Nhf2+ 30.Kg1 Bxa3 31.axb7

Why repeat moves with ... Nh3+ and ...Nf2+ ? Just take the B straight away and be two pieces up. The game continuation really was a blunder, allowing White to regain the piece.

Yet on other moves, the punctuation was quite liberally applied. E.g. I wouldn't call a normal Sicilian move like 4... d6 "dubious".

It's automated computer notation by the lichess site. My guess is that it picks the line with repeating moves because this stops it seeing something at the end that alters its assessment by some fraction of a pawn. Not sure how strong the computer is but it gives a good general indication of how well or badly you played, though its assessments of individual moves can be debatable.

Interesting games. In the above, even 11. b4 looks loose, separating the Q-side Ps and weaking the c-pawn and c-file for insufficient compensation. 12. b5 made things worse. Presumably the computer preferred 12... Na5 because it was aiming for the furthest available outpost on c4. 25... Bg5 instead of the obvious 25... Rxd4 might have been a good example of the rule, “When you see a good move look out for a better,” by the Rev. Prof. William Wayte (https://books.google.com/books?id=xjACAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA31#v=onepage&q&f=false), later attributed to Lasker.

As it happens I saw the better move first, and a few moves out at that. I'm not sure that I even noticed the good move at all. I've often been good at quickly spotting themes that trap an opposing rook.

The B-pair cooperated very nicely, and White's loose Q-side gave the light-squared one good squares on c4 (and b3 in the note to W26). With best defence by White (e.g 25. a4 instead of 25. Nc3) Black would probably have been stuck with the good move, which still results in good compensation for an extra pawn.
