A quick nit-pick - the tournament details at the above link are still referring to the 2014 Laws.

Noted & amended!

I don't follow the law changes. Can you advise what's changed? Thanks.

Noted & amended!

I don't follow the law changes. Can you advise what's changed? Thanks.Well the horsey still moves round corners and stalemate is still a draw. I'm not sure exactly what has changed between 2014 and now but I think in practice the main things to be aware of are current rules concerning illegal moves and those about mobile phones. Kevin may be able to point to a single consolidated list or a succession of lists, and there are various threads under Arbiters' Corner.

A useful document which has the most recent changes identified can be found here (https://www.dorsetchess.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Laws_of_Chess_2018_-_EB_approved_-_highlighted_correction_version.pdf). I believe that the original text would be the 2014 FIDE Laws of Chess, but I haven't confirmed that.

Now the name Newstead rings a bell, maybe a bus going there not sure! Is it far
from the old venue at the College or Launceston CBD?
OK got it, not that far - walkable distance from say Town Hall,
Even closer from the place I stayed last time!
Clashes with our Ballarat Begonia but wasn't going to play there,
so I might give it a thought!

Thanks, I hope so too! I have already put it down on my diary but I have to go around a couple or three of orthodontic appointments! Fingers crossed!

I, also, didn't receive notification of squashaddict's entry. It is possible that some people who are intending to pay cash on the day haven't actually completed their entry. The system still requires players to complete CC details, even if paying on the day, before the checkout process is complete. I have queried this with Ian L. and understand he's looking into it, but suspect that squashaddict's entry might still be languishing in his cart for this reason, since there is no reason for notification of completed entries not to go to Ian L., Kevin or myself. Can club representative's please advise members of this registration issue? Thanks. Denis

It's excellent. Tasmanian players are all looking forward to the chance of finishing 2nd.!

If any other GMs feel like hopping on a plane for an hour or so, it's free entry and a sea of grateful faces when you arrive ....

I think so - and probably also for the Tas. Open. Wiki says his peak rating so far is 2533. Darryl Johansen won 3 Tassie Opens (peak 2531) and Stephen Solomon won 1 in 1983 (peak 2478). KB will know the full story.

In terms of career highest rating I think the highest was Anton Smirnov (currently 2567 which is his highest so far) - but he was only ACF 1495 when he played!

The strongest in terms of rating at the time of playing in the Tas Open seems to have been Johansen in 1985 - his ACF was 2510 and his FIDE about 2440 at the time.

The strongest previously in the Champs in terms of rating at the time of playing was IM Vladimir Smirnov (then ACF 2324/FIDE 2371) in 2009.

It's hard to say how strong 13-times champion Otto Weber was; his Aus Champs results suggest in modern terms he would have been a strong FM at the least, but the other Tasmanians did manage to beat him to the title 3 times in 16 years.

I just went to double-check the closing time for entries so that I can remind people tomorrow night. The flyer (which isn't obviously available online) says that entries close on Wed 6 March and must be made online, but I couldn't see any reference to either provision on the tournament web page (ref post #1 above) or Facebook page. Is my eyesight at fault and if not do these still apply?

I also noticed this and advised Ian L. a couple of weeks ago, but not sure about the status. Last year Reg H. thought he'd completed the online entry requirements so we obviously allowed that late entry. If someone turns up on the day expecting to play, and since there is no advice of a closing date on the webpage entry form, I'd be inclined to say yes. I know the 3 Beetons will all be playing, with one of them organising the event, but haven't yet received formal advice of their entry.

A post by the PCYC on Facebook.

"PCYC will have a fully stocked canteen available throughout the championships. Nachos, Pizza by the slice, sandwiches, muffins, chips, chocolate, fruit, cold drinks plus a Coffee Got Soul will have their coffee van selling beautiful hot drinks and milkshakes.

PLUS, in between games, you can play air hockey, table tennis, boulder on our rock wall, bit of Archery Tag or shoot hoops. Great to keep the kids entertained whilst the adult games go longer.

All proceeds will go towards setting up PCYC Chess Club that will start the following Sunday."

Excellent!

I've just been appointed DOP (mainly for the purpose of doing pairings) and Ian Little will be Chief Arbiter. In view of the issue with the website not displaying a cutoff date, I intend that entries remain open until the start of round 1, and also that round 1 pairings and draw for colours be done on the day. However, anyone intending to enter who has not already done so should let me and/or Kerry Beeton know.

can we have some statistics re attendance (no. of entries) for a period spanning say last 10 years? thanks in advance!
there's also a very slight possibility that I might be able to play pending on completion of my business in Sydney. If yes,
I will contact you by Friday to either confirm and maybe request a R1 bye (Not necessarily a half point bye) or to let you know that I am not coming.

I am considering to come with my boy. But I am a little concern about looking after him (as his games will be probably finished soon while my games may be took longer), also accommodation, travel etc. I will confirm it as soon as possible. Cheers. Tan & Le

The all-time record is 32 in 2007.

Fields since then were 29, 28, 22, 12, 10, 19, 10, 16, 15, 14, 18.

As you can see there was a big drop-off from 2010 (the end of the last big wave of juniors crossing over) but things seem to be picking up again now with more juniors in this year's event.

There are no half-point byes allowed in the Tasmanian Championships (not even for players ineligible for the title!) But zero point byes with advance notice are fine.

I have an idea that: we will make a special prize for the best performance vs the GM. This prize will be decided by David. And the fund will be raised by donation among players. As this time we are very excited to have a chance to play with a GM, this prize will motivate People perform their best. If everyone agree with that idea, I am happy to put a small amount (20$) and hope it will be increased as I believe someone will put some on that. Cheers!

Sorry I can’t be there for all of this. On Drs. orders I can’t even drive right now.

Great to have David Smerdon playing. Should do a lot of good for Tassie chess, especially for the younger players, to see and experience some GM caliber play. As Nigel Davies says: « Keep Company with the Strong »!

White should not have exchanged the light-squared bishops. Black had a comfortable position and a small edge especially after the Q exchange. Surely White didn't need to give away the h-P for nothing as far as I can see. Probably ...f6 should have been played, say move 26. Yes, Nimzo wrote that you shouldn't attack the P chain at its head instead of the base, but in his play he sometimes did. The backward P at e6 would not be as weak as the isolated P at d4. Compare Atkins–Capablanca, London 1922 (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1093062).

Bonham - Rout

1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 c5 5.c3 Why am I so risk averse that I keep playing insipid rubbish like this? 5...Nc6 6.0-0 Be7 7.Re1 0-0 8.Bg5 Qb6 9.b3 h6 10.Bc1 Ne4 11.Bb2 cxd4 12.cxd4 Bb4 13.Rf1 Be7 14.a3 Bd7 15.Nc3 Nxc3 16.Bxc3 Rac8 17.b4 Nb8 18.Bd2 Rc4 19.Rc1 Rfc8 20.Be3 Qa6 21.Ne5 Rxc1 22.Bxc1 Ba4 23.Qd2 Nd7 [23...Rc2 eg 24.Qf4 Be8 25.Nxf7 Nd7 26.Nxh6+ gxh6 27.Qg4+ Kh7 28.e4 Nf6 29.Qh4 Ng8 30.Qg4] 24.Nxd7 Bxd7 25.e4 dxe4 26.Bxe4 Bg5 1/2-1/2

Instead of 23... Rc2, first 23... Bg5 to prevent that strong counterplay in the note.

But instead of ... Bg5 on move 26, if Black wanted to play, he would have an edge with 26... Bc6. White would need to exchange rather than cede the long white diagonal, and the remaining B would be bad. Having major pieces without many minors means that the IQP side is likely to be forced to tie up those heavy pieces defending.

Will Rumley has defeated Reg Harvey and joined the tie for the Tasmanian Champion title. He is the youngest ever co-champion by 4 years!

Aidan had a dramatic loss to Thanh that put Thanh in a position to share the title. Thanh had played Qc7 and Aidan played Nd7-b8 leaving a B on c8 en prise. But instead of taking it Thanh retreated the queen, then the players repeated moves to the same position where Thanh saw it the second time around.

One game still going.

The Dutch Swiss pairings for this event did have some odd aspects because there was a GM at the top beating all of the rated players, while there were also six unrated players who between them lost all 21 games they played against players with either classical or rapid ratings - these players tended to feed points into the midfield, causing some of the lower-rated (but still rated) juniors to now and then appear on high boards.

Nonetheless the system has correctly picked the three most worthy players to hold the title based on their performances this weekend. I get the raw TPRs for the three co-champions as Rout 1897, Nguyen 1909, Rumley 1882 and these are well ahead of the remaining eligible players. (As Nguyen is clearly underrated, Rout's performance would become somewhat stronger when interim ratings were included in the TPRs.)

All the best for a speedy recovery. Yes, GM Dr Smerdon's presence would have been a major attraction of the championship, and many people's first experience of playing a GM.

I believe Ian Rout was the only participant to have played a GM over the board in a classic rated game before (he had done so about five times when he was based in the ACT). I had only played a GM one-on-one OTB in a blitz game (Zhao at the Australian Junior 2010 parents, coaches and organisers blitz).

Just my two cents: It was a really fun, well-run event. I didn't hear so much as a grumble from a single player. Kerry, Ian, Kevin and all the other volunteers did a great job. All GMs should add a Tas tournament to their bucket lists!

It was one of the best organised Tassie events I have played in! Not having to go anywhere for meals (or organise meals in advance) because of the ready supply of pizza was a big bonus. The new club has a really nice setup there and had some nice displays as well as the unexpected bonus of a large chess book donation.

GM David Smerdon v. Denis McMahon (R.3)

Fritz says it's mostly pretty equal till 15. Bxc3 gives Black a slight edge, which becomes a -1 edge after white castles queenside. Then 23...Nh7???? loses on the spot. I shouldn't have listened when they said knight on the rim spells trim. I should have just left it on h5 and played 20. Rfe8 instead. In my defence, this was the first time I've ever played a GM and the third classical game I've played against anyone in the last 9 months or so - the other 2 being in R.s 1 & 2.

As a footnote to David's kind comments above, the TCA has now formally adopted the policy that GMs, IMs, WGMs and WIMs will enjoy free entry to TCA tournaments. Our next major event is the Tasmanian Open in Hobart (June 8-10).

Just my two cents: It was a really fun, well-run event. I didn't hear so much as a grumble from a single player. Kerry, Ian, Kevin and all the other volunteers did a great job. All GMs should add a Tas tournament to their bucket lists! We should clarify that David is referring to the other Ian (Little).

A good event efficiently run by Ian and Kevin and the organisers Kerry, the Launceston club and the canteen people, which everyone enjoyed and I'm sure will be at least equally well attended next year.

One thing that I thought was a little harsh is that as I understand the rules Luwanna doesn't get the women's title because there weren't enough eligible players. I see the point that you don't want someone losing all their games and getting the title by default as the only female but that isn't the case here. Perhaps the rule should be that the number of eligible players doesn't matter if you score at least x points/percent. Anyway, just a thought.

I didn't really win any memorable games so here is my game against David Smerdon (I'm White):
