The tournament had an interesting start, with a very good result by Ryley Dang on board 6 and a marathon game on board 3 which lasted until nearly 8 pm.
Late entries are welcome!

This week I've nominated two games, and taken one position from each which can both be solved as puzzles. I've put the solution in white text underneath each diagram - highlight to read!

The first one, from Narenthran - Shaju, is White to play - what should the result be?

8/8/6P1/r7/5P2/4k1K1/8/8 w - - 0 1

While watching this I thought 1. g7 would win, as the pawns should overwhelm the rook - but Black has a neat way to draw - 1...Ra1 (not 1...Ra8 2. f5, which indeed wins) 2. Kg2 Ra2+ 3. Kh3 Ra8 4. f5 Kf4 5. f6 Ra3+ and Black now sets up mating threats to hold up the pawns indefinitely. For example 6. Kg2 (6. Kh4 Ra1 7. Kh5 Kf5) 6...Ra2+ 7 Kg1 Ra1+ 8. Kf2 Ra2+ 9. Ke1 Ke3 10. Kd1 Kd3 11. Kc1 Kc3 12. Kb1 Rg2 13. f7 Rg1+ 14. Ka2 Rg2+ and the king must return onto the first rank, since 15. Ka3 runs into 15...Rxg7 16. f8=Q Ra7 mate!

The second position is from He - Clark, White to play and win.

5rkq/5p2/p1Q2Pb1/1p2p3/8/2P5/P1P5/1K1R4 w - - 0 27

1. Rh1 Bh7 2. Qg2+ wins by exploiting the bizarre positioning of Black's queen. Instead the game continued 1. Qd6 Re8 (but 1...Qh6! wins) 2. Qc6 Bxc2+ (2...Kf8 was necessary) 3. Kxc2 Qh2+ 4. Kb3 Re6 and, missing a forced mate via 5. Qf3, White played 5. Qa8+ Kh7 6. Rh1 which was only good for a draw after Black set up a fortress: 6...Qxh1 7. Qxh1+ Kg6 8. Qe4+ Kxf6. Though it might be possible to break down Black's position by playing a4 at a good moment, White instead played c4 soon and after ...bxc4+ Kxc4 was left with no real winning chances.

That top one is great. A long time ago Ian Rogers posted a link to an online rate-yourself type quiz with this material balance. It was fascinating, there are many R vs 2P positions that are really tricky to analyse.

One of the most memorable occurrences of this ending in practical play would be: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1386893 . According to Dvoretsky, following the adjournment - White persuaded his opponent the position after Kf5 was drawn, with faulty analysis (maybe he didn't know the analysis was wrong though...) and they agreed a draw, though it should be a win for Black!

Position after winning attempt 92.c5 bxc5 93.d6 cxd6 94.b6 Kxe2 95.b7 c4 96.b8=Q c3:

1Q6/8/3p4/4p3/5b1P/2p4K/4k3/8 w - - 0 1

Looks like 97.Qc7 now wins, eg:

(i) 97...Bd2 98.h5 Kd1 99.h6 c2 100.h7 and queens

(ii) 97...Kd2 or ...Kd3 98.Qxd6+ Ke2 99.Qc6 Kd2 (...Bd2 100.h5 etc) 100.h5 c2 101.h6 Bxh6 102.Qxh6+ and this is another case where the extra pawn prevents the stalemate defence.

Or in line (ii) if 99...Kd3 100.h5 c2 101.h6 c1=Q 102.Qxc1 Bxc1 103.h7 and queens

The e5 pawn is a big problem for black.

However in variation ii, the tablebases confirm that White can't make progress - actually it looks significant that the e5 pawn is controlling d4, so when White manoeuvres the queen to b2 and Black replies Kd2-d1, Qd4+ is impossible.

 Seems like the line is a draw then. With various other queen moves from move 97, if black just shuffles the king around d2 and d3 (or as needed e2) there doesn't seem to be any way to attempt progress other than going to that Q+2P ending.
