Hopefully tomorrow...

There are 4 young leaders on 2/2 in the GM tournament: Bobby, Anton, visiting Gm Andrey Kvon and evergreen Solo. I did not see other games, but Anton was so much dead in his game.

Vlad

There is a single young leader from NZ on 2/2 in the IM tournament.

Is this tournament being held in secret? Are the scores/games published anywhere? The Aust Masters is a great tournament that used to be fun for people to follow in the holidays but it looks like no-one is promoting it this year.

Good endgame battle between probably the best two endgame experts in Australia

But after this it doesn't pinpoint errors, but just likes Black's position more and more.} 30.Rxc8 Bxc8 31.Kf3 Kf8 32.Bd5 Ke7 {Computer first prefers Kg7, presumably to hinder White from getting a passed P, but then on more thinking, the evaluation is ~3 regardless} 33.Bc4 Bd7 34.Kf4 Bc8 35.e4 Bd7 36.e3 Bc8 37.Be2 Bd7 38.Bg4 Bc6 39.Bc8 Kd8 40.Ba6 Ke7 41.e5 Bd5 42.exf6+ Kxf6 43.e4 Bb3 44.e5+ Ke7 45.g4 Ke6 46.h4 Ba2 47.Bc8+ Kd5 [47... Sudden finish.

Unofficially and at a quick look I get that Cheng needs 2/3 for a GM norm and Zelesco and (in the IM event) Clarke need 2/3 for IM norms, and nobody else can get norms.

If anyone gets anything different let me know; I haven't checked these calculations carefully.

Even closer now; according to the live games Cheng and Zelesco both won and as far as I can tell need 1/2 while Clarke drew and needs 1.5/2. (I don't know if Clarke has norms already or not.)

One would think that norm tournaments would post the norm score requirements.

Chigoresov
22-12-2018, 11:04 AM
Norm requirements are sometimes a little different for various players as everyone has a different average rating of opponents.

You could trust Kevin's quick calculations where he has explained what is required for Cheng, Zelesco and Clarke or you could check out (scroll down to 9 rounds section):

See post 6.

Under Post 6 all I can see is a poorly formatted website with no livegames. It's unfortunate that the organisers didn't arrange for livegames on chess24 or at the very least on auschess website. This was been done on previous years and the boards were only recently used with success in Adelaide at the Young Masters.

Considering Bobby is going for a GM title and Zelesco an IM title I am confident that most Australian chess players would like to follow the games live.

This coupled with no advertisement for the tournament until Kevin started this thread after the tournament had began is quite unacceptable. Almost all other Australian tournaments do a better job at providing live games, updates and advertisement. Those tournaments, unlike the Masters, do not offer norms.

Imagine the following situation, you come to deliver your lecture at the oldest Australian university (you have done it previously like 1000 times) and...

For some reason, a projector does not work, a computer is frozen and for some reason you can't reboot it, etc. Luckily you have a mobile phone on you but you do not remember the number of IT services. You call your mate, another professor, he finds it in the internet and sends it to you. You call them and they promise to come soon. You are already like 15 minutes in and probably have to wait for another 20-30 minutes. At this point one of the students, who accidentally happened to be in the room, tells you that you are the worst professor ever as you do not even know how to use a projector.

What a battle! I was chatting to some ppl about the upcoming rd8 at MCC today and there was general consensus that a quick draw was likely as it would almost secure first for Anton and Bobby will only need a draw with white in the last round to secure his GM norm.
Glad that we were wrong!

Kevin Bonham
22-12-2018, 10:56 PM
So Bobby has to beat Kvon with white in the final round to get the title. Zelesco has to draw with Solomon with white for his norm. Clarke needs to draw with black against Lee.

(all subject to confirmation)
