Just a reminder that the tournament will be starting this Saturday afternoon. If you'd like to enter with a round one bye, just give us a call so you can be included in the round two pairings.

It was good to welcome some new players (and others we hadn't seen for a while!) at the club today. If you'd like to enter late in time for round 2, with a half-point bye in round 1, just give us a call before Wednesday (contact details can be found in the initial post).

The draw for round 2 will be published early on Wednesday morning - bye requests should be received by 9 pm Tuesday night.

Here are the round 3 results - quite an eventful day at the club with a complicated struggle on board 1 and two family pairings in the one round! (Though the maximum possible number, 3, was not reached as Kevin and Jack won their games on neighbouring boards)

Here are the round 4 results, with Leon maintaining his half-point lead on 3.5/4, followed by 6 players on 3/4.
Just in case anyone is curious about what happened on board 12, in a strange coincidence we were notified shortly before the round by both players that they would be unable to make it, so the game was scored as 'kingside castling' (0-0).
In general - although we understand things can come up after the draw is published, we still encourage all entrants who know they have a doubt about their availability to ask for a bye.

In the much-anticipated return of the Game of the Week, we are featuring Rashid vs Leontyev, a complicated draw on board 1. The annotations are based on the post-game analysis today, and some insights gained from the engine as well. The game started strongly for Russell, who was however left in difficulties after some over-ambitious kingside play. Leon won a pawn and the advantage, but perhaps made too many concessions in order to trade White's active queen and agreed a draw after exchanging into an endgame where White would have full compensation for the pawn.

1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 Nf6 3. c4 c6 4. e3 e6 5. Nc3 Bd6 6. Bd3 Nbd7 7. O-O O-O 8. e4
dxe4 9. Nxe4 Nxe4 10. Bxe4 h6 11. Re1 Nf6 12. Bc2 c5 13. Be3 b6 (13... Qc7
is perhaps more accurate, and only then ...b6.) 14. Ne5 Too weakening, White
has lost the advantage. (14. dxc5 Bxc5 15. Bxc5 bxc5 16. Qxd8 Rxd8 17. Rad1
Bb7 18. Ne5 offers White a big advantage in the endgame.) 14... Qc7 15. Ng4
Overlooking the strength of Black's 17th move - now Black should be better. (
15. Bxh6 looks tempting but 15...gxh6 16. Qf3 Nh7 is a clear refutation, 17.
Qxa8 Bb7 18. Qxa7 Ra8 being the problem.) (15. Bf4 was the simplest way to
maintain equality.) 15... Nxg4 16. Qxg4 Bxh2+ 17. Kh1 f5 18. Qg6 Bf4 (
The group around the post-game analysis
correctly figured out that Black should play 18... Rf6 19. Qe8+ Kh7 20. Qh5
Bd6 , with a clear advantage.) 19. dxc5 (In fact it is better to keep the
option of d4-d5 and play 19. Rad1 .) 19... bxc5 20. Rad1 Rb8 21. b3 Bxe3 22.
Rxe3 Qf7 (As Russell suggested 22... Rb6 intending ...e5 gives Black the
best chances to play for a win.) 23. Qxf7+ White offers a draw and Black
accepts. It seems the position is equal, since White can either win the c5
pawn with Re5xc5, or tie Black's pieces down to the defence of the weaknesses,
though there is still some play left. 1/2-1/2

Here is the critical board 1 game from today's round. Stephen gave Bird's Defence a try, leading to unconventional play involving queenside castling in the Ruy Lopez, though along the way Leon missed a practically decisive line 10 Bxe6! fxe6 11 fxe5 followed by Qg4. An unclear middlegame then arose and for several moves the players debated whether White's bishop at a6 was a strength or a liability. At move 25 Leon should have traded queens and followed Bf4 to ensure its survival. Later after some inaccuracies Leon had to decide on the best way to lose the exchange - though it appears he could have secured a draw with 32 Rh5 Bxf1 33 Kxf1, since 33...Rgf8+ is answered 34 Bf4. It's hard to say where the game became lost, although 39 Rb6+ was certainly a mistake, creating afterwards the possibility ...Rb7 for Black - 39 Kf1 still offered drawing chances.

Here are the round 6 pairings (sorry they're a bit late).
Regarding Stephen's question, the tournament started on 29th September. We plan to submit the results for FIDE rating prior to the December list.

So the tournament be rated on September ratings due December , i ask because lot of juniors improve in 2 months . eg Jackie Li September was 1567 now he is 1685.
I cant remember if fide rate from the start of tournament ratings or current rating.

To the best of my knowledge the ratings at the time of round 1 are always used to calculate FIDE rating changes, even if they become outdated later in the tournament.

The tournament has had a few more plot twists, with Stephen's withdrawal and the outright leader Robinson having to take a 0-point bye for round 7. This leaves us with a very important game on board 1 to decide the tournament this Saturday! As an indication of how close the tournament has been, there remains a possibility of 6 players finishing the tournament in 1st on 5/7...

Here is the game of the week - the last game of the tournament to finish and the hardest fought of the round. Kevin Cron showed it is possible to win endings with a knight against a bishop, despite there being pawns on both sides of the board...
