Hello! The 2018 Lidums Australian Young Masters GM and IM events started today, with two strong 10 player round-robin events. All eyes will be on IM Bobby Cheng and IM Kanan Izzat to see if they can again score GM norms from this tournament.

Unfortunately, there have been issues with the broadcast of chess24 for round 1. I am hoping to have this fixed by tomorrow's 2:30pm round, but in the meantime, please feel free to view the games in progress at: http://view.livechesscloud.com/d3e17985-9bc5-4c99-b011-51ff2a9e79b5.

(Please note - chess24 will have a 30 minute delay when the games are live, and I will be removing access to other rounds when it is working. This is just a temporary measure.)

The games from the IM event are unfortunately not live, but I will be typing in games and uploading them to the chess-results.com website.

Of course as soon as I posted this the chess24 website worked. :) I will keep the DGT live cloud showing for the rest of the round and then remove it tomorrow.

In case anyone is interested, the requirements for norms are:

GM tournament: GM norm = 7/9 for everyone except Kris Chan (who needs 6.5).
There are also IM norms available for the three non-IMs/non-GMs to score - they need 5/9

IM tournament: IM norm = 7/9 for Clarke, Lee, Chan and Zulfic. 6.5/9 for Ang, Cameron and Winkelman.

Does anybody know what happened to Junta vs Papin? He didn't play the winning move at 34... and then the game stopped. He lost on time?

The board has registered an extra move that didn't happen. Junta attempted to play 33...Qe7, but lost on time. The boards have picked up 34.Rh1 but that wasn't a move, just the players resetting the board without having placed the Kings in the centre.

I will update the chess24 file now.

Games from the first two rounds of both the GM and IM events are now available via their chess-results.com pages. I will try to keep this up during the tournament but we will see what happens from tomorrow onwards with the other two tournaments starting.

DGT boards were a lot better today so players could follow on at home :)

Tomorrow the Open and the U1200 tournament will start. With around 25 players in each pool, this tournament continues to grow from year to year!

A BIG THANK YOU to all the sponsors!

Results for all four tournaments can be seen on the Lidums website - www.lidumsaym.com under "Results". For the three FIDE rated events they can also be found on chess-results.com:

Chess-results GM page: http://chess-results.com/tnr396076.aspx?lan=1
Chess-results IM page: http://chess-results.com/tnr396077.aspx?lan=1
Chess-results Open: http://chess-results.com/tnr399020.aspx?lan=1

All games from these three tournaments are being entered and uploaded onto chess-results. Currently the games are completely up to date with the exception of one where the handwriting was terrible - one of the players is sending me his game today to fix.

Bobby Cheng is surging closer to the GM title, hopefully - he will continue to perform solidly in the remaining rounds. In the IM sections - Big surprised to have someone rated 2075 coming equal 1st so far on 4/5. Could be a new master-in-making emerging!

Hopefully so! He's the Canberra kid Albert Winkelman, who is home schooled and has been travelling a lot the last few years to play tournaments overseas. He recently competed in one of the First Saturday events in Budapest. Hopefully he can keep going and get 2.5/4 in his last games :)

Thanks Jonathan! But my work here on chesschat has been at a minimum this year, too busy looking after DGT boards and entering games!

Well, that is what Anton's former coach can do. Up to an IM I would say it is pretty much expected. The harder bit is from an IM to a GM.

So, there were no good news stories from the event? No norms in any of the fields?

Unfortunately not no! :(

We had two players who eligible for a norm going into the final round, FM Patrick Gong (IM norm in the GM event) and Albert Winkelman (IM event) but unfortunately both were not able to get one.

The score of 7 or 6.5/9 (depending on rating) makes it very hard for the players - if they start off badly they have no real chance to get one. Hopefully this can change next year and we can give some out!

Well, at least it shows that the event is hard-fought and honest - I confess I find myself wondering about some of the 'getting norms' events if that's always the case.

The games from the International Master norm event are now all available via http://chess-results.com/tnr396077.aspx?lan=1&art=1&turdet=YES&flag=30 :)

All games should be correct, but one is missing the last 20 moves or so due to issues with the scoresheet. The player in question may send me the game in which case I'll update it.

I plan to have all Open tournament games online before 26 December, as then I'll be away for a month PLAYING chess.
