2018 South Island Championships
Incorporating the 2016 All Canterbury Championships

This is a class 1 event in the Poison Pawn Grand Prix in association with D&D Financial Consultants, proudly sponsored by Benson Insurance Brokers Ltd, held from 30/09/2018 - 03/10/2018 (Sun - Wed).

The venue is the Canterbury Chess Club clubrooms at 9/27 Tyne Street, Riccarton, Christchurch. Minimal off-street parking is available on weekdays.

Tournament Information
The tournament is a FIDE and NZCF-rated event and is an 8 round Swiss, paired with the assistance of Vega. Time control is 90 minutes per player, per game, with a 30 second increment from move 1.

Tournament Timetable
Players' meeting will be at 9:30am on the 30th and Round 1 will start at 10am. All other rounds will start at 9:30am and 3pm. Prizegiving will be held as soon as possible after round 8.

There is a guaranteed minimum prize fund of $800 made up of cash and book prizes. This will be increased if entries allow.

The highest-placed South Island NZ player (NZ resident or citizen registered with a South Island club) will be the South Island Champion and the highest-placed Canterbury resident will be the All Canterbury Champion. Prizes will be shared between players on the same number of points - tie-breaks will not be used. Players may not win more than one open or grade prize, but may win the All Canterbury Championship prize and a meritorious performance prize in addition to other prizes. NZ Master points are on offer - 10 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd and 1 for 4th.

South Island Championship Competition Rules

Ratings: The tournament will be FIDE-rated and NZCF-rated. Pairings will be done and rating-based prizes awarded on the basis of NZCF ratings. Players without NZCF ratings may be assigned a rating by the Arbiter for the tournament. NZ players will be issued FIDE IDs where required. Foreign players must have a FIDE ID to enter - foreign players without FIDE IDs should contact their national federation to arrange this before the tournament.
Defaults: The default time is 30 minutes after the start of the round, per NZCF Regulations.
Appeals: A player may appeal against a decision of the Arbiter. An Appeals Committee will be elected at the Players Meeting. Appeals must be lodged in writing within 30 minutes of the end of the game. A fee of $100 will apply, to be refunded if the appeal is successful or otherwise at the discretion of the Appeals Committee.
Mobile Phones: During a game, players are forbidden to have a mobile phone, electronic means of communication or any device capable of suggesting chess moves on their person in the playing venue - please note that this includes smart watches, but does not include digital watches with LCDs. Such devices may be stored in a player's bag or jacket, which is to be left under their table or over the back of their chair during the game unless permission is given by the Arbiter. Such devices are to be switched off and are not to make any noise. Breaches of this rule will result in loss of game unless the Arbiter decides otherwise.
Half-point Byes: Players may elect to take a half-point bye in any one of the first six rounds. Please inform the Arbiter prior to the completion of the previous round. Players may not take more than one half-point bye in the tournament.

The entry fee is $90 ($80 for juniors, tertiary students and unwaged players) this tournament or $120 to enter the South Island Championship and Rapid Championship ($100 for juniors, tertiary students and unwaged players). Please include your name, date of birth, NZCF ID, FIDE ID and a list of tournaments you would like to enter in the email, and we will send a reply with our bank account number.

Tournament got underway yesterday with 22 players. Results etc. in the links as above. After 2 rounds, 4 players are on 2 and playing each other, and 3 players are on 1.5.
